Chapter 23
When Kayla and Lucas got to the party, Lucas parked in the parking lot. Kayla looked around at all the fancy cars parked around them. Kayla could see that this was not a party for the low class.
Lucas went over to the other side of the car and opened the door for her. Kayla walked out and he put his hand around her waist as they both began to walk in.
From outside, everywhere looked quiet and controlled but inside was a ruckus.
The moment they got to the door and the bouncer opened the door for them Kayla could see that the party was going on in full force. Lucas had not told her who was throwing the party or exactly what it was for and she didn't think it was important to ask. Lucas shook hands with a few guys as they navigated the crowd to move forward. A band was playing a popular song and Kayla could see some of the boys and girls moving their bodies to the beat of the music.
Lucas said something to her but she could not hear him because if the noise
"What did you say?" She mouthed
"I said let's go get some drinks" Lucas said and led her towards the bar. There were some people sitting close to the bar drinking and kissing.
Lucas got to the bar and got some drinks from the bar.
He pointed at a table close to the bar
"That's where we are going to be sitting" he said
They both joined the group of people sitting close to the bar. There were some drinks on the table and Lucas added the ones he bought to it. Kayla liked that everyone just buys drinks and adds to the table. No one was going to be a parasite. She had initially thought that it was the kind of party where drinks were free but apparently it wasn't. This didn't seem like it was hosted by one person in his or her house. It seems they had all contributed and rented a place for the party. It was all for the better too as there won't be any parents snooping around. They both sat down. Some of the guys shook hands with Lucas and some of the girls smiled at him.
They all talked and drank in the dimly lit hall. Lucas pulled Kayla closer to himself and was about to start kissing her when a boy joined them at the table. Kayla saw Lucas face immediately turn white. She turned to look at the boy. He was dressed in all black and had a girl on his arms. Although she couldn't see him clearly enough, she could tell that he has brown hair and black eyes. He looked strangely familiar.
Kayla felt Lucas pull slightly away from her. She wondered why. She had prepared herself for his warm kiss only to get such a cold treatment.
The boy joined them at the table and the girl with him sat on his lap. He sat beside Lucas. Kayla noticed that he hadn't brought any drinks.
He picked up a bottle of drink from the table, took a swig for it and then kissed the girl on his lap. Kayla looked at the girl; she was a slim blond with long lashes.
'nice party huh" the boy said smiling at Lucas
Lucas stared at him coldly.
Kayla felt cold all of a sudden. She should have taken a jacket.
"Do you want to dance?" Lucas asked her
"Sure" she said, perhaps the movement would dispel some of the cold.
Kayla felt the boy's eyes follow them as they stood up and left the table
"Is everything alright?" Kayla asked as Lucas led her to the dance floor
"Yea Yea.. everything's fine" Lucas said
"Who was that?" Kayla asked him. She realized that she was shouting
"Who was who?" Lucas asked her, looking clueless
"The guy that walked in. The one with the blond" Kayla said.
Lucas looked away and then looked back at her.
"That's my brother Derrick," Lucas said to her.
So that was why he looked familiar. She remembered where she had seen him before. She had googled Lucas and could still remember that cold black eyes staring at her from the screen.
"Oh really?" She said, feigning surprise
"Let's dance" Lucas said and Kayla took it that he didn't want her to say anything more about Derrick
Lucas held her hand and they started to shake their body to the highlife music. The fluorescent lights cast shadows around them as they twisted and turned. Kayla was enjoying herself but she couldn't stop thinking of Derrick and the smile he gave Lucas. There was something beneath that smile and not to mention that fact that Lucas froze when he saw him and he didn't even answer to him. Something was definitely up.
Suddenly Lucas stopped moving and Kayla looked around and sure enough, Derrick was now on the dance floor with the slim blond.
He was dancing so close to them that Kayla couldn't help thinking that he was following them.
Lucas grabbed her hand and led her to another part of the dance floor.
"What's going on?" Kayla asked Lucas
"Nothing" Lucas said
"Are you trying to avoid your brother?" She asked. Of course he should expect that she would have noticed that something was up. She wasn't stupid or blind.
"You don't understand" Lucas said earnestly
"Make me understand" Kayla said to him
"Derrick can be an asshole and that's why I'm giving him space" Lucas said
He seems nervous for a reason. His green eyes were so light that they shone brighter than the fluorescent lights rotating around them.
"Come on, just forget about that and let's dance" Lucas said
Kayla shivered
"Are you cold?" Lucas asked her and before she could answer, he took off his jacket and wrapped it around her.
Kayla hugged the jacket close to herself.
"I can make you warm if you're still cold," he said to her and gave her a wink.
Kayla blushed red.
"What do you have in mind?" She asked him
Lucas pointed his hands up.
"Let's go upstairs and I'll show you" he said smiling
