Forty-Six

An hour later we are back in our house and sitting on the sofa waiting for Micah and Alicia. I really wish they would wait until the morning because he’s tired and quite frankly so am I. He’s eaten his dinner and is now enjoying his second slice of cake that I’m only allowing because of the night we’ve had. I shake my head as I watch him eat the cake with a big grin on his face. My baby is so easy to please. The doorbell rings and I start to get up to answer it but he pushes me back down and shakes his head at me. I don’t blame him for not wanting me to answer the door after this crazy night but I’m not completely helpless. I’m also not stupid and I sit back and let him be a man. First he looks through the peephole then unlocks and opens the door. We all greet each other then I ask them what is so important that it couldn’t wait until the morning. They both look at each other and then hands Jameson an envelope and tells us that we may have a problem. He opens the envelope and there is a picture of Keith and a woman. I look at the caption and apparently they’re married. I feel the color drain from my face as Jameson goes still next to me. I can’t read the entire headline so I try to lean closer to see and he quickly puts the paper back in the envelope. Okay that’s weird. Why wouldn’t he let me see what it said?
“Baby what did it say?” He looks at me and then back at Micah and Alicia. They all share a look like they’re deciding whether to tell me something or not, then I see Jameson shake his head no at them. What is going on? I quickly snatch the envelope from his hands and stand up then start to pull the paper out.
“Doll I don’t think you should look at that right now.” He looks scared and worried. “Please give me the envelope back.”
“No. I’m tired of you all acting like I’m too fragile to handle things. What could possibly be in here that I can’t see?” I pull out the paper and instantly regret looking at it because there in big bold letters the headline reads, “HUSBAND IN SMALL TOWN IN LOUISIANA ACCUSED OF KILLING WIFE IN COLD BLOOD” and at the bottom is a picture of Keith on the left in handcuffs and his wife on the right. Under her picture is another one of the coroner taking her body out of their home in a body bag on a stretcher. I drop the article and my legs start to feel like jello. Jameson quickly gets up and sits me back onto the sofa.
“Micah what does this mean? I mean why did you guys come here to tell me this tonight? It isn’t like you knew he came here tonight.”
“Wait a minute. You’re telling me that he was here tonight? I was just looking into your background to try to see if there’s anyone that you and Sarah may have in common that told her about your baby or any of the other information that she knew when I came across this article. I remembered Jameson saying something about someone named Keith from your past and when I say that he was from the same town as you, I knew that I needed to come here to find out if he is the same person. He escaped from jail and they can’t find him.” I’m too shocked to say anything so Jameson takes over and answers Micah.
“Yeah that is the same guy. He came here tonight talking about he came here to see her and that she’s only saying she doesn’t want him because of me. We ended up getting into a fight and are going down to the station in the morning to press charges.”
“I think that you guys should do that tonight and we need to tell the cops who they have in custody right now. Your lives could both be in danger especially you Jameson. He sees Renee as his and you are someone that he needs to eliminate in order to be with her. He already killed his wife and I’m sure he won’t hesitate to try to kill you too.”
I know that Micah is right and I’ll do anything to keep my man safe. If I lost him because of a mistake from my past I don’t know what I’d do. This man is who I’ve been waiting for and I can’t and don’t want to think of the possibility of someone taking him from me.
