#Chapter 60: He refused to give up
Third Person POV
After Herold left the banquet, there was a hole in his heart that he knew he could never mend. He could not get the image of Olivia and Gabriel arm and arm at the banquet.
If only we could have been that happy back then.
While Herold was away, he made sure that his Beta would handle his affairs with the pack. He was aiding Ramon to his new station as Alpha. Alpha Alpha Ramon surprised him that the wolf announced he would take Mara as his Luna when she fully recovered.
What if I had pledged my devotion to Olivia like that in her former life?
Ramon stated to Herold during training that Conan had owed Mara for all the misfortune that he had put her through. Alpha Ramon wanted to make amends for the former alpha’s betrayal. This made Herold more determined to win Olivia over.
We made sure that Alicia and Conan paid for their crimes, but Olivia still has not forgiven me.
He felt that since he aired out her secret, Alpha King Gabriel would cast her out for her deception. It shocked him when he arrived back home to find that President Fernadez had announced during the televised dinner that the bond between the Alpha King and the Queen Luna was strong and could never be severed. But Herold refused to give up hope.
She stayed with me while I was nothing but a broken man and a worthless alpha. She stayed with me when Alicia turned her back on me. And all I did was mistreat her.
Harold still hadn’t given up on his pursuit of Olivia. For days, he sent all of her favorite flowers to her apartment. He tried to send messages to her, but they were met with nothing.
He refused to give up. The last place he knew Olivia would be was tending to Reese and Mara. He saw Olivia sitting across from Reese’s slumbering form.
As she looked up, Olivia let out an exhausted sigh. She stood up and motioned for them to leave the room. She did not want to upset Reese during his final days of treatment. He had just gotten his antidote for remedy and sleep relief medication.
Olivia slung her laptop bag over her shoulder and made her way to the garden out in the open. If anyone saw them, no one would question them talking anymore. Thanks to President Fernadez, the bond between her and her mate was pure and true.
Olivia sat do on the bench but she put her bag down forbidding Herold to sit next to her.
“Alpha Herold, what are you doing here?”
“I came by to see you. To check on and make sure that you are doing okay,” Herold said as he looked down at her hand. Her wedding ring was still there. When he looked into Olivia’s eyes, he noticed a smug look on her face.
“Disappointed? What you thought that after you revealed to Gabreil my true identity that he would disown me?” Olivia snarled.
Herold stayed silent. I love you, Olivia.
“Did you ever stop to think what would have happened had Gabriel not forgiven me? I could have been exiled. Hell, I could have been executed because of your selfish actions.” Olivia said harshly.
She tried to stay silent, not to get anyone’s attention. Olivia knew the orderlies were known to walk in the common area and she knew they would stop to look in on the Queen Luna.
“I just wanted to make amends to you, Olivia—”
She halted his words by swiftly raising her hand.
Olivia gave Herold a list of the cruel things he had done to her —
“Let me tell you all the bullshit you and that traitor put me through. I had to give up half of my liver because she swore up and down she was dying without it. And you believed her.
You had me thrown in jail because she abused herself to make it seem like I did it. You are the reason why I lost my life and the life of my baby.”
“Olivia.” Herold said, trying to console her, but she pushed him away.
“My death was caused by the continuously stabbing I endured until I couldn’t draw a breath in prison. And you did not even have the nerve to come to me,” Olivia said as she tossed the laptop across the garden in blind fury.
“Olivia I am sorry, truly I am,” Herold whined.
“Leave, Herold, just leave.” Olivia said as she fell back in her seat on the bench.
Harold left sadly. He wandered aimlessly away from the hospital and out of the Royal area. That night, drove his luxury car rapidly on the mountain road, trying to get pack to his pack.
I caused all of it. Her death and the death of our baby. It is all my fault.
Herold thought as he felt a strong sense of guilt. As he pressed his feet on the gas pedal, he tried to make a sharp turn however it lead to him losing control of the vehicle. When the paramedics found Herold’s vehicle, it was smashed against a tree trunk with Herold going in and out of consciousness.
They brought him back to the Royal Hospital, where Eugene operated on Harold. Eugen noticed that after the surgery, Herold’s old leg injury had suffered again because of the car accident.
“You need to give up your pursuit of your former luna,” Eugene stated when Herold came to. He refused to beat around the subject any longer.
“What are you saying, brother?” Herold said as Eugene looked over Herold’s chart.
“What I am saying is you failed as a husband, miserably. Do not let your pride and anger cause you to fail your pack. Herold, you cannot fail to fulfill his alpha responsibilities.”
Eugene sat down in the chair next to Herold. As he surveyed his broken brother, he felt no pity.
“My pack is one of the strongest in the nation.” Herold growled.
“But think about if you were unable to protect your pack if your injuries got worse. All members of your pack would lose the protection of their alpha if you treated your life this bad.” Eugene scoffed.
“You knew, didn’t you,” Herold realized.
Herold took noticed to the comment that Eugen made earlier about “pursuing your former lover.” So Eugene had known this whole time the Queen Luna was Olivia.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Eugene sighed as he looked at his brother.
“I did not tell you because Olivia asked me. And even if she didn’t, I would not have told you. I didn’t want Olivia to get hurt by you again.”
Herold rested his head in his hands. Nothing could change how much he hurt Olivia, but he wanted his mate back. He wanted to make amends for his degression.
“I want you to hear me when I say this Herold. You will not get Olivia to go back to you. You killed her.” Eugene snarled at his patient as he left the room.
At the end of the night, Eugene told a fellow nurse to check on Herold for the rest of the night. He could not bear to look at his brother any longer.
