#Chapter 67: The King of the Coven Has Come
Third Person POV
“Maverick, I do have one request,” Eugene said as Maverick got out of his seat.
“And what is that, my discip—” Without a second thought, Eugene slammed the dagger into Maverick’s heart.
“I need you to hand over your throne to me,” Eugene said as his eyes bleed black.
Maverick pushed himself off of the blade and away from Eugene. But it was too late. the scent was in the air. Maverick fell to his knees, coughing out blood.
“Do you like it? While I was researching Alicia’s little drug to weaken wolves and slowly kill them. I notice that the ingredient she was using could also kill vampires quickly. Because you have no protector like werewolves. Once it enters your bloodstream, it evaporates, and the death is within moments.”
Eugene pushed Maverick’s body away from the desk. Maverick weakly slid into Eugene’s mind. His tongue had fallen to the floor with the blood.
Why? I gave you purpose.
Eugene looked at the so to be corpse.
“Because you have the means to ending it all. When you charged me with coming back, and I planned on continue being your Deputy until your demise.
But after my brother’s betrayal and yours for that matter, I want his blood and yours.
I figured with after finding the cure for the two young wolves in my care, I would strengthen the last sample I had to take you out.”
Eugene flicked his wrist, and an underling had appeared.
“Yes Deputy,” the underling never looked at the floor. They all know that Maverick was dead.
“Send word to the other clans that Maverick has passed. Get someone to put his remains with the other kings. And send word that I am now in charge.”
The underling left in a flick of fire, taking the corpse of the dead Maverick with him.
Becoming the King of Vampires was the first step. Then spill the blood of the men that continued to get in his way. And finally claim Olivia as his queen.
The news had spread faster than anyone could have expected. The Vampire King was calling for war. Both the President of the werewolves and the Alpha King were trying to figure out a course of action.
Herold had gotten news about the upcoming war when he arrived back to his territory. His Beta gave Herold the news with a letter when he arrived back from business. Like Gabriel, he threw himself back into his work, trying to forget about what transpired between Olivia and him.
“We do not know when he will strike, but I do know that we are all that stands between the Vampire’s army and the Capital.” Herold said to his council. “We have to stop them and by as much time as we can.”
After convening with the council, he ordered many of the women and children to evacuate with the elderly that would not face battle. Harold tried his best to protect everyone in his pack, including the old and the sick. He called for several transports to move them to the hospitals across the country.
That was when he learned Eugene was no longer working in the Royal Hospital. HE asked around and found that Eugene had renounced all claims to werewolves. While transporting one of the last veterans to a hospice, the old man recognized Herold.
“Come Closer young man. I remember you. I saw you fighting in the war a few decades ago.”
Herold smiled at the elder. “You were there, solider?”
“I was there. I remember you running into the attack and succumbing to your injuries after rescuing so many young wolves. I even remember the woman that took care of you and donated blood after the battle.”
The elder described Olivia from the spark in her eyes to the brightness of her smile. It brought tears to Herold’s eyes, knowing that Olivia took care of him no matter his treatment of her.
After everyone was transported and all the women and children were sent elsewhere only the soldiers and Herold were left. Herold stationed several warriors across the lands and sections of his territory. He knew that the attack would not happen until the night fell. Herold had hoped that they would be ready.
When he went to his office to look over the strategy, it surprised him to see Eugene sitting in his chair.
“Brother, where have you been?” Herold said as he went to Eugene.
“I have been around, Alpha,” Eugene said with venom in his words.
“I called everywhere, and no one heard from you. The hospital said you resigned, but you did not come back.” Herold said, trying to understand his brother’s decisions. He made his life taking care of others.
Herold thought about how much the pack would have needed his help transferring the elderly and sickly to the hospitals. Using Eugene’s creditless as a doctor would have been a huge help, but that did not matter his brother was here to help.
“I resigned because there was nothing left for me here,” Eugene said as he stepped forward. “I was hoping that Alicia would have poisoned your mind like she did. Conan and Gabriel would have killed both of you trap hungry wolves. You were both a disgrace to your mate and potential.” Eugene hissed as he squared up to Herold.
Herold growled at his brother’s words. Sure, he knew he made mistakes in the pact, but to have his brother bring them up was unexpected.
“What has come over you, Eugene?”
Eugene laughed at the question. “YOu know I could have killed you on the operating table, that night they brought you in. But because I took the oath as a doctor and as a wolf of your pack,” Eugene stopped. He looked up at his brother and let his eyes bleed red.
“To be honest, I hardly cared about any of those matters. In truth I did not want to sully my reputation nor did I want to blemish my scalpel.” Eugene sighed as he slammed into the Alpha’s body.
Normally, Herold would have been stronger than his brother. However, since Eugene accepted his vampiric nature, he was able to take out the Alpha. Before Herold was able to react, Eugene slashed his nails along Herold’s throat. When Herold brought his hands to his throat to try and heal the wound, Eugene slammed his talons inside of Herold’s chest.
Eugene showed no emotion as his brother slid to the floor. He pulled a handkerchief out of his pocket and wiped the blood onto the cloth.
“For what it’s worth, you deserve a slow death. You deserve a merciless death for everything you and that wretch she-wolf put Olivia through. If you would have just accepted your fate sooner, I would have Olivia as mine.” Eugene snarled.
Herold began to cough up blood and spat it at his enemy’s feet. “If my death means the war will end before it begins without any casualties, then my death will be worth it.” Herold laughed at his brother’s revelation.
“And by the way, brother,” Herold said, fading.
Eugene squatted down to hear the last words of a dying wolf.
“You will never… have… Olivia’s… lov….” Herold said as the words died on his lips. Eugene growled at the dead man’s last words. He let out a low whistle that signaled for all of the vampires in hiding to come once dusk approached the lands. He mind linked with the Beta of the pack and summoned him forward.
Herold’s Beta, Joesph came forward and slowly bowed to Eugene’s feet. He knew that the omniscience power had belonged to the good doctor.
“Good evening Joesph, I am glad to see that you are well.” Eugene said as he sat behind the desk.
“You killed the Alpha. You killed your brother,” Joseph said, staring at his fallen comrade.
“No, I did what needed to be done. I got rid of a selfish Alpha that put his needs before that of his pack. An Alpha whose leadership cost us the life of no one but two Lunas—even though one of them was not worthy of the title—as well as petty decrees like stopping medical treatment of an ill-fated wolf. So tell me, Joseph, was my punishment too harsh for the likes of this traitor.” Eugene said as he gestured to the corpse in the corner.
Joseph looked at his former brother in arms. He had served with Herold in the war as well as by his side when he had fallen in combat. He watched the deceased Luna Oliva nurse him back to health as well as suffer to his wrath, however he said nothing. In his mind, Joseph did not differ from his former Alpha. He thought that maybe he could make amends to his crimes.
“I will atone for my sins against the pack as well as for what was done to the late Luna,” Joseph said as he kneeled before Eugene.
When the night fell, the vampires in Eugene’s coven came and took over Herold’s pack. Eugene clarified that they would hurt anyone again. Eugene mentioned that there would be a brief period of peace and mourning for the late Alpha.
