Chapter 123

The medical complex in Gretchintown was one of the most important buildings in all of Michaelanburg. As Mother White stood inside of the central office, watching the monitors, she couldn’t help but think about what would happen if this building were to fall to the enemy.
The results would be devastating for Michaelanburg.
That was exactly why she’d been sent there. President Violet had pulled Mother White back from the front line where Spanish America was making inroads, moving up to a half a mile into Michaelanburg each day. The situation was beginning to look dire, and it was no longer just a rebellion that was problematic; the world seemed to be against them now. Despite the training of their military and the technological advances the country had made over the last two hundred years, sheer numbers were enough to obliterate their female-led nation. Mother White couldn’t even stand to entertain the thought of it.
Protecting this building had become the most important objective of the war now. There were other buildings in other locations that were also critical, but none of them were under direct fire at the moment since the capital and other cities were more centrally located. Mother White had always thought it was a bad idea to keep vital records and other information this close to the border, but for many decades, there’d been no threat to the north. The no-man's land between Michaelanburg and the River Red was only occupied by a few hundred unorganized tribes, and Oklasaw wasn’t in any position to threaten Michaelanburg. Not on their own, anyway. Mother White was fully aware that several members of the Oklasaw militia had joined in with the Nation of Quebec’s forces and were attacking them at the moment. But they'd never been a threat on their own.
The cameras in front of her showed every angle of the outside of the medical center, and Mother White was watching them carefully. She’d sent a detail out some time ago to try and slow down the attack on the building, but they hadn’t done much more than pick off a couple of shoulders and kill some of their own citizens. So it was only a matter of time before the building she was standing in was breached. But then… that’s sort of what she wanted. She’d filled the medical center with capable soldiers. It would be easier to pick the invaders off once they were trapped inside of the walls of the medical center.
She had a few prisoners left in the holding cells in the basement from the rebellion. They had been of little use recently, but she’d continued to keep them, just in case she needed them for something. There were also plenty of Dicks left in their chambers. She was certain the Quebecians would do all they could to free them, so they were locked down tight with plenty of troops around the entry points and exits.
Then, there were the incubators. The fetuses growing there were the future of Michaelanburg. They had been moved out of this building to another town weeks ago because the Mothers knew this building was certain to be a target of the invaders. Those fetuses had to be protected. All of these areas needed to be kept safe, as well as the vital records in the offices near where she was standing.
“Mother White, there’s a detail approaching,” Mother Peahen said, pointing at one of the screens in front of them. Mother White had already noted the movement before the other soldier spoke.
“Yes, I see them. That’s the northeast door. Release the locking mechanisms and kill the alarm,” she said.
Mother Peahen turned and looked at her as if she had two heads. “You want me to… let them in, Mother White?”
“Yes, that’s exactly what I want you to do,” she said. “They will be much easier for us to destroy once we have them inside our little maze. It doesn’t look like there could be more than two dozen of them. It shouldn’t take long to pick them off.” She wondered why the Quebecians were sending such a small force in to take such an important building, but then, she realized they had no idea just how many secrets were locked inside the building. Nor did they know the magnitude of the forces she had waiting for them.
As Mother White watched the group of enemy soldiers infiltrate her building, she stared at the screen, counting bodies. The full-color camera picked up every detail, it was so advanced. She could see everything about these soldiers when they walked into the building, down to their eye color.
And their hair color.
Mother White inhaled in shock but tried to cover it with a cough as soon as she realized what she’d done. She didn’t need to alarm the other Mothers in the room with her as to what she’d just seen, but Mother White was certain that she’d just gotten even luckier than she’d ever imagined.
She recognized one of those faces, recognized her hair first and then her familiar face.
Rain, the rebel from Weatherhouse, had returned. Mother White did her best to keep her emotions in check, but this was one invader she wanted to face for herself.
