Chapter 152

A large piece of wall came crumbling down on her right, crashing into her leg and taking her down to the ground hard. She felt a snap and knew that her right leg was broken. Screaming came naturally, but sucking in enough air to let out a shriek only burned her lungs. Mist tumbled to the ground as Rain could no longer keep her balance, and they both landed on the ground in a heap of limbs and building materials.
As soon as she regained her bearings, Rain tried to push the concrete off of her leg. It wasn’t budging. She was pinned. Mist was lying on the ground beside her, Black suit covered her features, but Rain could still see the beautiful face of her best friend underneath.
Mist didn’t deserve to die there. She’d done so much for so many people. She needed to live. She needed to go on so that Walt wouldn’t be forgotten. With those thoughts in mind, Rain tried to move the chunk of wall again. This time, she managed to scoot it a few inches over, but her leg was still pinned beneath it.
The heat from the fire was beginning to become overwhelming. She could feel the flames getting closer. That and the weight of the concrete pressing against her leg was just too much. She felt like she was beginning to slip away, to lose consciousness. Her lungs were burning.
It would’ve been so easy to just close her eyes and lie down, to just wait for whatever came next to envelop her and pull her from this world. She knew The Bridge was a made-up story meant to make little girls feel more hopeful about their prospects when they were being murdered. But there had to be something after this, didn’t there?
Rain had a feeling she was about to find out.
Her eyelids were heavy as the smoke continued to coat her insides. Mist was sprawled beside her, not choking, not even moving. Rain wasn’t even sure if she was breathing anymore.
If Mist was dead, and Walt was dead… she may as well be dead, too. It would make life much easier.
She would miss Adam, of course. He didn’t deserve to be left behind without her and the others, but she knew he would find someone who would make him happy. He was young and had his entire life ahead of him. He’d go back to Quebec and follow his dreams of becoming a lawyer so he could help people, especially men. She would’ve loved to have the opportunity to see that. Growing old with him, having children and grandchildren, making a home, building a life, all of those were dreams she hoped to share with him.
Someone else would do those things with Adam, but at least he’d get to do them.
At least it wasn’t him in here where the fire was so hot and the fallen debris was so heavy.
“Rain!”
For a moment, she thought she was hallucinating. No one in here could possibly be shouting her name. But then she heard it again.
The voice was familiar, though strained and hoarse, probably from the smoke. She couldn’t see much of anything through the haze, but she did see a form in the distance, lit by the sun coming through the door that was not all that far away.
“Rain! Is that you? Are you alive?”
“Seth!” She couldn’t believe he’d come back for them. She’d told him to leave, to go make sure that Josie got out, and he had. But now… he’d come back. He shouldn’t be there, but since he was, he needed to get Mist, and he needed to get her now. “Seth! Over here! Hurry!”
Once he heard her voice, he picked up his speed, dodging around piles of fallen ceiling and pieces of wall. No more explosions had gone off recently. Rain was pretty sure those weren’t done yet, but she hoped they’d hold off just a few more minutes.
“Are you pinned?” he asked.
Rain didn’t answer him. “Take Mist and go!” she said.
“Rain! Is your leg stuck?” He asked, looking at the heavy piece of debris that was holding her on the floor.
“Please, Seth, just get her out!”
He was close enough that she could see his eyes. Through the haze and smoke, it was difficult to see his expression, but she did see the sadness in his eyes.
He didn’t want to leave her.
“You can’t take us both!” she screamed at him. “Even if you get this off of me, I’ll still be trapped. My leg is shattered. Please, Seth. Get her out. Get her to a medic.”
“Rain--”
“Go!”
They couldn’t continue to discuss this.
He was shaking his head, but he bent down and lifted Mist holding her in his arms like she was a small child. “I’ll be back! Get your leg out of there.”
“Just go!”
Seth turned to leave and Rain wished she could tell him one more thing, to pass a message along through him, but that wouldn’t be fair to Seth. She couldn’t ask the man she hadn’t chosen to tell the man that she knew she couldn’t live without that she loved him.
Seth disappeared through the smoke, and Rain turned her attention to that damn boulder holding her leg to the ground.
Mist was out now. She was going to be fine. Maybe she hadn’t been in the best shape, but she would make it. She was a fighter, after all. Now, Rain could lie down and rest, like she’d wanted to do before.
Seth had told her to try and get her leg free. It sounded like a good idea, but she was afraid that moving the rock might make it hurt even more. Leaving it there might be for the best. She wasn’t going anywhere anyway. Her leg was broken, and she couldn’t drag herself to the opening.
Not trying wouldn’t be right, though. She had to at least give it some effort. Putting her hands underneath the concrete, she tried one more time to push it off of her. It didn’t budge. Not even a little bit.
The air was so thick with smoke now, she could hardly see the wall in front of her. Pain radiated throughout her body, her eyes felt like they were full of needles, and her lungs felt spongy.
It was over. She may as well just accept it. She may as well just rest.
“One more time,” she said in her head. “I’ll push it one more time.”
Rain put her hands under the debris again and pushed. It didn’t budge at first, but then, the more she pushed, the more it moved until it slid off of her leg. It didn’t seem possible. How had she done that?
The pain from her leg was unbearable. She’d been right. Having the heavy weight there was preventing her from feeling some of the pain, and now that was over.
She could hardly stand it, but there was no way she could scream.
Now seemed like as good a time as any to lie down and take a rest. Rain felt herself beginning to slump backward, but before she could hit the floor, she felt arms around her. “I’ve got you, Rain. I’ve got you.”
