Chapter 159
Rain stepped inside the large circular room along with about thirty of her fellow soldiers from the Quebecian army. She glanced around at the faces of her fellow soldiers and saw the confusion and uncertainty on all of their faces. Adam was just a few people away from her. They caught eyes for a moment, but then Rain focused on the center of the room where President Violet was standing.
All around her, large boxes marked as explosives were stacked on top of one another, the highest stacks coming about to her waist. She was a short woman, with short dark hair and a swath of purple in the front, sort of like Mother White’s stripe, though Rain had assumed that that was natural.
Next to Violet was a pillar of some sort with what looked like a golden button on top. Wires from each of the boxes were wound around one another, creating one thick wire that was connected to the pillar with the button on top.
Rain understood what was happening. Mother Violet was about to tell them that if they didn’t back out of the building, she would press the button, and all of them would die. At the moment, she was standing a few steps away, her hand hovering near the button.
From her current perspective, it looked like all of the wires went right to the button. No other trigger seemed to be on the floor near Violet, nor was there anything in either of her hands.
Rain looked to Commander Donald who seemed frozen a few steps in front of the group. Rain was confused. It didn’t make any sense. Why were they humoring her?
What was she missing?
Was there some sort of a force field around her? The president didn’t even appear to be wearing any special bulletproof clothing, other than the standard Mother’s military uniform.
Why were they all standing there? Her hand wasn’t even by the button.
“That’s right. You are all wise to be so cautious!” President Violet announced. “If you take one more step in this direction, I will press this button, and you will all die.” Her hand hovered closer to the button but wasn’t quite over it yet. “All of you must back out of this room immediately. Allow me to take my leave, and then, you may do what you will with the others, but I will no longer be treated as a prisoner. I am a dignitary, damnit!”
She sounded like a crazy person. Had she lost it from the stress of battle, or had she always been that way?
Commander Donald was hesitating, but it was clear to Rain that he was about to make a bad decision.
What did he know that Rain didn’t know?
Again, she turned to Adam. He looked as if he was asking himself the same thing.
“Listen, President Violet,” Commander Donald began. “We recognize you as a foreign dignitary and are willing to take you to Quebec for a fair trial.”
President Violet’s laughter sounded maniacal. “A fair trial? Don’t be ridiculous! That would never happen. You would murder me the second I stepped away from this button.”
“That’s not true. Listen, if you’ll come with me, I’ll make sure you get a fair trial. I’ll even send the troops out of the room. I recognize that leaders often get punished for what their subordinates do. That will not happen with you. I promise.”
President Violet wasn’t laughing anymore, but she was still shaking her head.
“I’ll prove it to you,” Commander Donald said. He motioned for the soldiers to start backing out of the room.
“No!” Violet yelled. “No one leaves! They all die together if I die.”
Commander Donald took in a deep breath and let it out. “Come on, Violet. Don’t make this harder than it has to be.”
A wicked smile spread across her face as President Violet said, “I believe it’s a little too late for that, officer.”
Commander Donald continued to try and talk President Violet out of her plan, but Rain could clearly see that none of this was making any difference. Nothing the commander said would convince Violet that she would be given asylum. Her plan was simple; she knew she was going to die, and she wanted to take as many of them down with her as possible.
So there was only one thing to do.
Whether it was Rain’s place or not, it didn’t matter anymore. In another few seconds, the decision would be made for them as President Violet narrowed the distance between her hand and that button.
Rain turned and looked at Adam one more time. His eyes widened as he realized what she was going to do. But he didn’t shake his head. He only stared at her, shocked as she raised her weapon and fired several times.
The bullets hit their mark, striking President Violet in the forehead, knocking her backward as blood spurted out. The woman’s mouth opened slightly, and then she began to rock back on her heels.
She needed to fall. She needed to fall back onto the ground away from that button. If she reached the button before she fell, then they would all die.
President Violet knew that too. As she started to tumble backward, her hand stretched for the button. Chaos broke out around them as Commander Donald shouted at his troops to hold their fire. Rain couldn’t do that, though. She had to attempt to keep that hand from touching that button. She changed her target, shooting at President Violet’s hand. Another gun joined in as she realized Adam was shooting, too. President Violet’s hand was hit several times, blowing it to pieces, leaving only a bloody stump as the leader of Michaelanburg fell back onto the floor.
Commander Donald’s face was red as she screamed at both of them to drop their weapons right away. Rain lowered her gun, and the commander screamed at her, positioning himself right in her face.
Rain didn’t hear a word he was saying, though. It was over. Whatever happened to her, it didn’t matter now.
It was finally over.
