Chapter 29: The trip to the kingdom in the West!
Though still feeling offended that he didn’t have the basic courtesy to check with her first before just tossing her on to the carriage like she was some luggage, she found herself enjoying the view from her carriage. The landscape, the rivers were beautiful and she found herself becoming fascinated with the sights she had never seen before in her life.
She frowned as she felt his eye on her and her eyes snapped to his in an instant, catching him by surprise. He blushed, flustered at having been caught red handed, staring open mouthed at her.
Selena let out a sigh as she asked, “Where are we headed to first?”
“My home”, he replied simply and watched her reaction to his statement.
She raised an eyebrow at him, then asked shocked, “We are going to the Kingdom of the West, first?”
He nodded at her meekly and responded in a sweet tone, which he reserved only for her, “It is only right that they get acquainted with their future queen first and you get to see your fiancé’s birth place.”
She bit her lip uncertainly, unsure of whether or not to ask the question that was bubbling up inside her mind.
Caro saw the questioning expression on her face and let out a sigh. He couldn’t figure out how to make his bride to be relaxed with him and ask him anything, without pondering it over in her head thousands of times.
“Please go on’, he encouraged her and Selena shot him an irresolute look while slowly making up her mind to go for it as she was a person who couldn’t handle her curiosity well.
“You are one of the original brothers? In fact, you are the last standing original vampire?”
Caro nodded at her, unsure of where this was going, but nevertheless a little satisfied that she had started talking to him normally.
“Why is your last name Silva when your deceased brother’s last names are Vanhuesan?”
“Because I took my mother’s last name”, he said softly.
Selena eyed him skeptically and knew that would be the end of the discussion and that he wasn’t willing to open up more about it but she couldn’t stop herself from prying further.
“Why?”, she asked in a small voice, pushing past his obvious barriers.
Caro eyed her affectionately. If it was anyone else was who was asking him these questions, he would have clammed up and pushed that person further away, but he didn’t want to keep any secrets from the woman he was going to spend all of his eternity with. He hoped that his openness would enable her to warm up to him.
“My mother was a common pheasant and not a royalty and she was always disregarded in the society and even when she passed away, not a singly soul came to visit her tomb. I am a bastard. Me and my brothers only share our father. I wanted something of hers to be remembered…..therefore Silva”
Selena’s eyes softened at him, and Caro’s heart skipped a beat as he saw the soft expression on her face when she leaned forward and patted his hand affectionately.
“I am sorry I asked”
Caro shook his head at her and replied, “Don’t be…..You have every right to ask…..Only you have the right to ask me anything”
Selena let go of his hands promptly and blushed furiously, flustered at his sudden and open remark.
“Are we getting close to our destination?”, Selena asked in a flustered tone, her voice coming out quivering and shy and Caro found himself grinning like a fool, satisfied that he was able to make some effect on the otherwise cold and aloof Selena.
He nodded at her and smiled. she was now looking anywhere but at him. Her unintended cuteness pulled at his heartstrings and he groaned as he realized that he could spend all eternity looking at that face right there.
“Selena”, he said softly, deciding that there should be no more secrets between them.
She turned her head back to Caro slowly, dismissing the beautiful view and shot him a look of surprise as well as shock.
“I did a background check on you when I felt that though you did resemble the first princess’s look and physical appearance, your personalities were poles apart. I apologize if you feel that I have violated your privacy”
Selena’s head weren’t on those thoughts exactly. She was more worried about how easily he had found out about it when her birth secret had been strictly guarded for years.
Seeing her worried look, Caro quickly jumped to reassure her, “Don’t worry, it isn’t an easy piece of information to get your hands on but I have spies in every single clan. It wouldn’t be that easy for someone else”
“May I address you as Selena when we are alone?”, Caro asked her softly and smiled enthralled as she flushed.
Her blushing was quite an endearing sight and he found himself becoming more and more beguiled by her numerous charms.
He maintained his eye contact with her, then watched in satisfaction her blushing furiously, her face almost the color of her original hair. Caro found himself frowning as he realized that the woman in front of him would have to spend an eternity living as someone else. The world would never hear of the red headed vampire called ‘Selena’.
The carriage suddenly lurched and Selena was thrown off by the abrupt jerking and she landed straight into his lap.
Caro raised an eyebrow cockily at her and she stumbled backwards and fell on to the floor of the carriage miserably. Caro let out a laugh joviantly as he offered her his arm. She scowled at him and grabbed his arm and pulled herself up, but the carriage had no intention of steadying and was lurching forward into the uneven road at full speed.
As she crashed into his arms again, Caro found himself thinking that he ought to give his attendant who was driving the carriage, a raise when they reach their destination.
He smiled slyly as he wrapped an arm around her waist and caught her steadily. The carriage then came to an abrupt stop and Caro barely managed to maintain his balance. He frowned as he let go of Selena gently and poked his head out of the window, his playfulness replaced by vigilance as he felt in his gut that something was amiss.
Demetri who had been diligently following them rushed forward and Caro got out sensing that something was amiss with Selena right at his heels.
“Stay back, it is an ambush”, Demetri yelled at Selena, already sensing the danger.
Caro raised an eyebrow in surprise at his declaration as his watchful eyes quickly scanned the surroundings. Demetri was right. This was a perfect place for an ambush. They were surrounded by forests and cornered on every side. He couldn’t figure out who would dare attack his royal carriage? Whoever they were, they weren’t normal thieves or goons.
“Natasha”, Selena murmured hatefully under her breath and Caro swore internally. Of course, the royal concubine had been waiting for an opportunity for the first princess to step out of the palace to make a move since her first assassination had apparently failed. She couldn’t dare to touch the first princess inside the palace under several watchful eyes so she clearly was waiting for a chance to strike and he had handed it to her on a silver platter. The concubine believed that the first attempt had failed even though it was very successful since the real Mia Langdon is indeed dead.
Men came pouring out of the bushes and trees and they found themselves forced into a circular formation with their backs to each other, eyeing the assassins dangerously. There were far too of them and they were largely outnumbered. The odds were not in their favor.
