11. The right thing
CHAPTER ELEVEN
She wanted to run after him but here in her hand was the one chance she had to talk to her brother. She couldn’t just give it away like that.
“H-Hello?” She stuttered unintentionally, the phone pressed against her ear, her heart thumping fast in her chest.
The other end of the line remained quiet, fueling the tension between them. Adrian on his part for the first time in a really long time, felt a certain line of weakness crawl over his skin, bending him to its will. He wanted to speak, utter something, *anything* but instead he remained passive, slowly registering his sister’s voice. He wanted more than that. He wanted to touch her hair, feel if it was as silky as it used to be when they were growing up. Or feel her face. Was she still the same cheeky kid he grew up with or did the pain change her like it changed him?
“Hello? Adrian?” she tried again, desperate to want to hear his voice, “I know its you. Please say something. I just want to hear your voice,”
Adrian remained silent, too overwhelmed to say a word or move a muscle. Sixteen years since he last saw her or heard her voice and now she was only a few minutes away from him. This fueled the rage in him. If it weren’t for the wolves, they would have been together all these years. Instead, they had subjected him to years of endless torment and constant nightmares.
Pushing the phone away from his ears, he slapped it back on a confused Trina’s hands before storming off and right past a confused Drake. He needed to blow steam off before he found himself murdering someone.
“Hello? Hello? Adrian?” Nadia called desperately. She just wanted to hear his voice; to know that she still had someone.
“I’m sorry,” Trina answered instead.
“Wait? What happened? Where is Adrian? I need to talk to him,” Her tone quickened.
“I know how much you want to talk to him Nadia but I think he needs time. Maybe when all this war comes to an end and we all make it out alive, you two could mend all these years of brokenness between you too,” she advised.
“I just…just wanted to talk to him,” she whispered, sinking to the floor, not even feeling how cold it was.
“Soon you will. Oh shit! I think he is giving orders to attack now. I gotta go but I will call you as soon as I can,” the call came to an abrupt end.
Nadia’s eyes widened. The war was happening right now? She had to warn Collins. She ran out before the sentinels could stop her, searching around till she laid her eyes on Collins. He was barking out orders, his face contorted into a look of seriousness. She would have stood there mesmerized but there was no time for that.
“Collins?” she called as she came closer to him.
“Not now Nadia,” He countered, sounding a bit aggravated. Okay, maybe their argument had been a little overheated but this was certainly not the time she needed him to be a sulking little kid.
“My brother is giving orders to start attacking the town right now,” she said.
“How do you know?” He questioned.
“Because I just talked to Trina,” she paused, looking straight into his eyes, “I wanted to stop this war but you wouldn’t let me talk to him. All this could be avoided if you could just let me ta-“
“I told you to do what you want Nadia. If you can excuse me, I have an actual war to stop,” he said just as Miranda stumbled into the line of defense, panting.
“The witches are here,” She announced proudly.
“Wait, aren’t they supposed to be arriving tomorrow?” Collins looked as much as Nadia.
“Not if I can help it," she paused, took a deep breath then exhaled," It was not as easy thing given I'm basically from the Enchanted Coven, which is currently in league with Adrian and not exactly the most cherished coven in the Witch town. Long story short, they should be portaling here any minute after making sure the human part of town is protected from the attacks. You are welcome," she said.
“At least someone is being helpful around here,” He said, aiming that jab at Nadia.
“Now you are seriously being a kid, Collins. Yes, we fought but how can we not when we are being pulled at exactly opposite ends of the spectrum? I just wish you could understand my predicament. I’m on your side here but that doesn’t mean I get to shut out the human part of me that longs for her brother. Can’t you understand that?”
“Actually I’ve tried understanding that but we made the decision to work together, not against each other. This human part of your that wants her brother, that would be working against me. The moment you brother gets a hold of you, the second we lose this war and people die. I mean, I certainly don’t mind dying for a good cause but what about all these innocent people and their families? Nadia, you are going to be my Luna and that means sometimes you have to make the most heartless decisions only because they are the right thing to do. We can’t run away from destiny,” he paused, blowing out a light breath, “I’m asking you to pick me. I’m just asking you to do the right thing,”
He walked away, leaving Nadia standing alone. The right thing? What was the right thing? Her brother, the only family she had left, was just a few miles away from her. Was it possible that he really was beyond reason? Would she be unable to stop him with anyone getting hurt? He didn’t even talk her on the phone and she had no idea why. Was it because he knew she would try to stop him? Either way, she would never know.
