8. We fight

CHAPTER EIGHT
“The weapon we are supposed to be, its not just against the werewolves but also against the witches; dark witches and that means, all the covens that join hands with the werewolves. Adrian has the only coven that has pure magic,”

He felt as though his mind had gone blank and no concrete thought seemed to pass through the thickness of his skull. If he had thought the odds were not in his favor, this had completely blown off any form of hope he thought he had left. The wolves were doomed and that was the undeniable truth.

“You are not seriously thinking of sending her to the enemy lines, are you?” Ethan questioned. He’d overheard their entire conversation but given the staunch Beta he was, even in the most tense of situations, he always seems to have it together. Sometimes Collins wished he was more like him. He maybe the Alpha and he always knew how to be in control, this time, he felt it slowly slip through his fingers.

“What am I supposed to do huh? All these people could die,” He countered, glancing around at the wolves already lined up for defense. He had never felt so defenseless like this before. Maybe he could have let his father take charge. Perhaps the old man could have at least ensured no one died.

Wait, no. What was he thinking? The old man was the reason they were caught up in this in the first place. He couldn’t just start letting him win like that.

“I’d rather we take the chance of fighting them here than sending her over to bloody vampires. That bloody hybrid is there and not to mention her friend and very vengeful twin brother. Maybe the latter cannot shake her decision but do you really think that the brother she had separated from for fifteen years would not be able to make her switch sides? Or if she even stays her ground, he could kidnap her, force her into activating whatever weapon it is they are,” Ethan countered, trying to make his Alpha see reason. He was skeptical about the entire plan. Even though he couldn’t admit it loud, given his Alpha’s affection for Nadia, he was indeed suspicious of her intentions. What if she was actually working with her brother all along? What if this was a phase in their plan? Being on the outside of whatever relationship the two had, made him see things more logically than Collins did and as his beta, it was his duty to fight for his pack till his last breath.

“Or she could perhaps be the one to change her brother’s mind,” Collins spoke out. Of course he would defend her. The man was infatuated-no, addicted would be more precise- to the woman.

“Are we talking about the same pyscho killer who has left a trail of bodies in his wake? Trust me, the only thing running through his blood right now is thirst for our blood. No one, not even his sister, would change his mind. Unless he gets what he wants there is no stopping him,” Ethan shook his head.

He was right and deep Collins knew that too.

“Then what do we do? Hide Nadia and pray he won’t find her?” Collins inquired, hands plastered on the arch of his waist. Why could he not have just one bloody minute of peace? If only his father had not killed the hunters.

“We fight,” Ethan said with a voice reinforced with determination, “You told us many times before that even in the face of the most fearsome danger, we should never give up. We fight till we can’t,’

“How are you so strong right now?” Collins questioned, swallowing down the bitterness. He was bitter because he was the one who should be feeling determined and instead, his beta was being more of an Alpha than him.

“Because you taught me right,” he shook his head, glancing around, “We may not have the numbers but we certainly do have a great leader among. Now I want that Alpha who was willing to fight for Nadia no matter what, to actually take charge and lead us,”

Collins felt himself slowly pulse up with energy as he looked at the man before him. Maybe this was why the Alpha needed the right betas. He nodded then turned to survey the werewolves. They were all giving their lives for a cause they weren’t even part of in the first place. He walked over towards them, standing in the middle of the defense lines.

“If someone had told me that one day our packs would be aligning to work together against a common enemy, I wouldn’t have believed them and yet here we are,” he paused, running his gaze around the people before he continued, “I won’t sugarcoat it and say the odds are certainly in our favor. Honestly, not even close. However, this town is our home. This town is the reason we can confidently say we have a place we can retire to at the end of a tiresome day shift or night shift. Today we fight for our families, our friends, our colleagues at work, our live and our home. We don’t give up, we don’t run. We fight. Are you all with me?”

“Yes, Alpha. We fight,” They all chorused, determination very open on their faces.

Maybe it was a thing about being a werewolf, but their pride would even walk them right into the jaws of death and they wouldn’t blink. They didn’t let the fear overwhelm them like it should and so they cast the doubts aside, getting ready to fight whoever was on the other side of town.
