Eden

We were sent back to Eden to await the time when my physical body would temporarily wake up from my primal self. Aphrodite rose from her seat, “How did it go?” Hypnos strode over to her, “Brigit was there lovely one. I believe you were right to summon me.” She nodded and sighed, “I can’t believe she still holds a grudge against me.” I cleared my throat, “I don’t mean to pry, Aphrodite, but why does she have such hatred towards you.” She sat back on her throne and regarded my question then nodded seemingly making up her mind to tell me. She summoned two less ornate chairs, “Sit and I will tell you.” I strode over to the chair in between Aphrodite’s throne and where Hypnos decided to sit and sat down. I looked at her and she gave me a serious look, “Long ago, Brigit was in love with a mortal. We rarely show ourselves to humans. Terrenian cannot handle the knowledge of a higher power, so they disregard the things they see as imaginations or dreams. Some use science to justify what they don’t believe. This was before science was so advanced.” She picked up her cup from the table and took a sip of the honeyed liquid that was inside and sighed. Hypnos cleared his throat, “Lovely one, you should go easy one the nectar.” I looked over at him and he had a look of concern on his face. She waved her hand at him, “I have only sipped it twice. Once before you left and just now.” He relaxed, “Okay, I just know that it is very potent.”

I didn’t want to ask about what nectar is and how it affects them. I was thankful she was telling me about her feud with Brigit, so I didn’t want to pry further. I looked back at her, and she smiled at me, “As I was saying, Brigit was on Terre visiting a mortal they called Nostradamus. He was her project at the time, and he was very perceptive to her powers. He had been attending a party where some Terrenian nobility was attending. She saw what she called the love of her life and manifested herself as a wealthy human to get to know him. The All Mighty doesn’t necessarily forbid us from having relationships with humans and semi-mortals, but He does know when it will not work out. He is an infallible being and the creator of all things. He did not share that with Brigit though who can divine the futures for others but cannot for herself. He summoned me and asked me to go to Terre and appear as a human in front of the mortals. It was at another party that Nostradamus was summoned to so naturally Brigit was there with her human. I was told by All Mighty to mingle amongst the mortals but no specific purpose. Being the embodiment of beauty and love, naturally her human noticed me.” I gasped, “So he fell in love with you?” She sighed and nodded. I suddenly felt bad for Brigit because the one she loved had fallen in love with another.

I had never been in love but I imagined the heartbreak of losing out to someone else. She was naturally bitter at Aphrodite, and I understood that. What I didn’t understand was how she didn’t realize that it wasn’t Aphrodite’s fault that this happened. I looked at her, “Didn’t you explain to her that you were sent there by the All Mighty?” She pursed her lips and casted her eyes downward, “I tried but she banned me from ever speaking to her again. When your soul was created, All Mighty said that I could claim you as my own child but that I would give up my rights to one of your children in the future to Brigit to atone for my sin.” I furrowed my brow, “You didn’t sin though. I don’t understand why He would punish you for following His orders.” Hypnos shifted in his seat and cleared his throat, “Lovely, it’s best never to question the All Mighty. You are one of his blessed, but he won’t hesitate to punish you for your insolence.” I nodded, “I understand.” The realization dawned on me that he might have done these actions on purpose so that Brigit could have my future child as her disciple. I thought to myself that I just wouldn’t have children then so Aphrodite wouldn’t suffer. As if she could read my mind, she reached over and shook her head, “That kind of thinking won’t do at all. You were destined to have children my child. I would hate it if you didn’t too. They will be something special to me…well, at least the ones Brigit cannot claim.”

I wrung my hands in my lap, “Do you know my future then?” She smiled at me and squeezed my hands, “I do, to some extent. You semi-mortals have some predestined future but the All Mighty gave you more choice than he gave the humans. You have paths that you can follow. For instance, Reggie had the choice to marry Talia or Vanessa. He chose Talia. Vanessa could have married Reggie, but she chose Talon. You have several choices despite the fact that Saraphia gave you only two. She fibbed by the way, as a child of the Goddess of Love and Beauty…your suitors are infinite. You could choose Blake; you could choose Lucien, or you could even choose that gorgeous Derek. Your choices are infinite, you could even go with Jess. You could still reproduce with her too. Hell, Hypnos could be your suitor. Marrying a semi-mortal isn’t taboo like it is for humans, you know.” At her mention of him, Hypnos shot up in his seat and looked at me lovingly. I smiled at him, he was a god and a beautiful one with golden eyes and golden hair and fair skin that showed he was not much in the sunlight. I turned back to her and knitted my eyebrows at one thought, “Why would Saraphia lie to me then?” She shifted in her seat uncomfortably, “She’s a child of Brigit, she did as she was told. Brigit wants her future prodigy to come from royal blood. Either way, she could get a child of a king.” I gasped, “Does that mean that I will be queen one day?” She shook her head, “Not necessarily, this all hinges on the competition that Lucien threw into the mix. I imagine that wholly pissed Brigit off. Sometimes semi-mortals throw a huge wrench in our plans that even the Goddess of Prophecy can’t see the whole your kinds’ future.” I made a mental note of that and would ask Grand Pretre about this later.

I was a little angry with Brigit for using Saraphia to manipulate me into choosing my future spouse amongst only two suitors when I could choose anyone. I looked down at my hands and then back at Aphrodite, “How could she not know that I would eventually find out about the infinite possibilities?” She giggled, “Well, like I said semi-mortals throw wrenches into our plans, she had not anticipated that I would ever be able to contact you. The Order had other plans. I hate the situation that leads me to being in your presence child, but I am grateful to be able to have you here in Eden.” Eden, I remember reading about it once in the bible and I had wondered if this was the place. She giggled and shook her head, “No it isn’t. All Mighty asked me to help Him make a place in Terre for Adam and Eve. I loved it so much that I named it after my home.” I cleared my throat, “So wait the human’s Yahweh is what you call All Mighty?” She shrugged, “In a sense, yes. He’s had to intervene in there world too many times that they now have a book about it. In Vellum, you all are untouched mostly.” I chewed my lip a little, “So does that mean to humans, you both are angels?” Hypnos chuckled, “We are whatever the non-mortals believe we are and need us to be, lovely. To them we are angels with different names from what they used to call us. To you we are Gods and Goddesses. To All Mighty, we are his faithful and unwavering servants and perfectly blessed children. We are what we need to be.” I smiled at the thought that the humans would think I had two guardian angels on my side now. I wasn’t complaining as I felt warmth and a sense of love for both of these two beings sitting with me here, now.

I felt a small tug at my chest and I looked up at Aphrodite and she smiled, “Hmm, looks like you’re going on small trip. See you again real soon.” I looked down when I felt a man’s hand holding mine and then a woman’s hand holding the other while the bright light of Eden faded to black. I closed my eyes and slowly opened them again. When I opened them, one of them was hazy with a red hue. I looked around at all the people gathered around my bed. Vanessa came to view first, then Jess, then Jean and finally my eyes settled on the person I had been looking for. He quickly reassured me that he was fine, that my father had stopped me before I took too much. I was relieved until I was aware my father had been there. I looked around the room further until my eyes landed straight into the chartreuse eyes of the one soul who could calm what I was feeling. He always knew the best times to show up for me. His voice came to my memory, and it was calm yet panicked but he was reassuring me that they were doing everything to help me. Was he talking to me in my sleep? Why didn’t I hear it until now? He started to tell me everything he had to say about how they were summoning a witch called Dorothea and she could cast away this curse permanently. I felt a tug on my chest again but this time I could feel a sharp pain in my stomach, and I jerked forward. I wanted blood so desperately, but I had to fight myself from lunging at the weakest one in the room. I hadn’t figured that out yet and I believed it was because my normal self was battling my primal self. I had guessed it was time to go and I shot a panicked glance at Lucien then at Vanessa. She picked up a golden rose and placed it into the hand that she was holding, and my world went dark again.

I opened my eyes again to see myself in Eden, sitting on a chair next to Aphrodite and Hypnos. He smiled at me, “That magical tool is awfully powerful, I could feel your physical body fall deeply into sleep. You will be safe from hurting anyone in that state.” I sighed in relief, “You don’t know how panicked I was when I could feel my primal self-wanting to break free from Brigit’s spell. I had to control myself.” Aphrodite sighed, “I could feel it since your soul is tethered here. What happens to your physical body in Vellum is something I can feel when those two entities are in the state that they are presently in.” I got up and hugged her. All of the warmth of a summer breeze and the scent of freesia hit my nose in that one action, “I am sorry, Aphrodite. You are doing so much for me that I don’t know how I will ever thank you.” She scoffed, “It is my duty as your soul’s mother to protect you. This is what I am honor bound to do. Even if I wasn’t, you are such a sweet child that I never would mind doing anything for you.” The mother of my soul was a strange expression that I had wondered what that even meant. I sat down at her feet and looked up at her, “I have a few more questions.” She smiled, “Well, we are going to be here a while. I got a message from Brigit while you were out. Those friends of yours are going to have a little battle to free you so this should take some time.”
