Chapter 26 To Be With Her

Edmund's eyes turned cold as he asked, "Have you asked who instructed them?"
"Mr. Haines, they haven't woken up yet," Jack replied.
Edmund's gaze became even colder as he said, "When they wake up, find out the mastermind behind this, and we'll deal with them together."
"Yes, Mr. Haines," Jack said.
Jack glanced at Victoria, who was lying peacefully in Room 202, and took a deep breath before speaking. "Mr. Haines, there's something I want to say to you, but I'm not sure if it's my place to say it."
Edmund's eyes were fixed on Victoria as he said, "You're one of the people I trust the most. There's nothing that we can't talk about."
"Alright," Jack said, relieved.
"I have experienced life's unpredictability. When I was young like you, I met a girl whom I was deeply in love with. However, we couldn't be together due to our different backgrounds, and my parents forced me to break up with her.
"Since then, I haven't met another woman who has made me feel that way. I have been single for twenty-three years, and I have never seen her again. Every day, I think of her and regret not being with her. If I could have one more chance, I would go against the world to be with her."
Edmund's voice softened as he said, "Jack, I sympathize with you, but I can't understand what you want to say."
"I don't want you to repeat my mistake," Jack said.
Edmund's eyebrows furrowed slightly.
Jack pointed to Victoria in the bedroom and said, "Mr. Haines, I understand you well. You are not easily falling for someone. If you have feelings for Victoria, you should try your best to keep her around you.
"There's no need to be with a woman you don't like just to repay her kindness. Don't end up like me, regretting it for a lifetime."
"Keep Victoria around me?" Edmund thought.
This idea made Edmund excited.
But then, he said in a cold voice, "Jack, how can you tell that I like Victoria?"
"I..."
Jack paused for a moment, then shook his head.
"Mr. Haines, you're still not willing to face your feelings. One day, you'll admit it."
Jack had left for a long time.
Edmund remained seated on the sofa, his attention fixed on any sound coming from Victoria's room.
Before realizing it, he had stared at Victoria for nearly two hours.
Suddenly, a gust of wind blew, and the door to Room 202 closed with a loud bang and locked automatically.
Edmund felt nervous when he couldn't see her figure. He quickly ordered, "Get a key and open the door!"
No one answered him.
It was only then that Edmund remembered that a month ago, he had pretended to be seriously ill and had replaced all the servants in his house, except for the two who were taking care of his mother, with deaf-mute servants.
...
At this time, the effect of the drug on Victoria had worn off, and the heavy sound of the door closing awakened her.
Opening her eyes, Victoria felt surprised that she was actually at home.
Then, she remembered how "Snake" had humiliated her.
Earlier, Yvette had found Victoria's purse in the storeroom, and it was on the bedside table.
Victoria quickly took out her phone from her handbag and called Xenia.
"Who are you?" Xenia's voice trembled.
Victoria made a deal with "Snake" that he would call her once the job was done, but it had been almost two hours, and there was still no word from Snake, which made Xenia anxious.
Victoria sneered.
"Don't you have my number? Or do you not recognize my voice? Or do you think I'm already dead and that the person calling you is Snake?"
"What are you talking about? Who wants to kill you? Who is Snake? I don't know him!" Xenia panicked even more when she realized Victoria was still alive.
"Is that so?"
Victoria felt ironic.
"Last month I saw you hanging out with him, and now you're saying you don't know him?
"Xenia, you took advantage of my love for my mother to deceive me into coming to your house. You knew how much I wanted to see her and that I would immediately take a taxi once I heard she was home. That's why you arranged for Snake to pose as a taxi driver and wait for me by the side of the road near the outpatient department. You are vicious!"
"You're slandering me! I have no idea what you're talking about. I'm busy, so don't call me again!"
Feeling guilty, Xenia quickly hung up the phone.
Victoria slammed down her phone in frustration.
After fourteen years of living together, Victoria knew better than anyone how malicious Xenia could be, and she was always on guard against Xenia.
But it was hard to avoid every of her scheme.
Victoria never thought that Xenia would become so ruthless as to put her life in danger. Even though Xenia had previously plotted against Victoria, she never went to such extreme measures.
Victoria knew that calling the police was useless.
Xenia was well-prepared and to avoid leaving any evidence, Xenia called Victoria using an unfamiliar phone number.
Victoria didn't need the police to avenge her.
She would take revenge herself!
One day, she would take revenge for both this new grudge and the old one that Xenia took away her innocence.
At that moment, Edmund called Jack to open the door.
Seeing Victoria already out of bed, Jack widened his eyes.
"Mrs. Haines, you're finally awake. Mr. Haines is waiting outside..."
Sensing Edmund's warning gaze, Jack quickly changed his words.
"Mr. Haines saved you, and he also personally helped you bandage your arm."
When Victoria woke up and found herself here, she immediately thought that it must be Edmund who had saved her.
So, she wasn't surprised at Jack's words.
Victoria looked up at Edmund and wanted to say thank you.
However, Victoria suddenly remembered that every time Edmund helped her out, he would remind her that he wasn't doing it for her.
So, she didn't say anything.
After seeing that she had awakened safely, there is a warm flow of spark-like emotion flashed through Edmund's eyes.
But in the next moment, he smoothly hid his warm gaze and said coolly, "No need to thank me. I will do it for anyone as long as they are my wife."
Ha...
As expected!
Victoria arrogantly raised her lips.
"You don't need to remind me. I know what you feel about me, and I don't plan on thanking you."
And feeling unsatisfied, she added, "Moreover, I don't need to thank you. I've already knocked out those two men. They will wake up later than me, and when I wake up, I can go home by myself.
"I'm a doctor, and I know my injuries aren't serious. What you do is unnecessary and will only slow down my recovery."
Victoria then tore off the gauze on her arm and threw it into the trash can.
At that moment, Edmund felt his heart hurt a little.
