Chapter 18 DEATHLY ENCOUNTER WITH WOLVES.
CONTINUATION…
I chased Tia at high speed down the streets, we passed cars and people—all which seemed to be paused in time. She was ahead of me, but I was cautious not to speed up for fear of falling again. I had already fallen three times and I was lucky she didn't notice.
The wind whizzed past my ears, filling my lungs and billowing my shirt. I spotted a few more shadowy figures and I thought I even saw one move instead of their usual stationary, statue like stature.
Tia stopped suddenly, I ran passed her but stopped on my tracks a few meters from her. I jogged up to her.
"Tired?" I asked.
"That was merely a warm up," She said.
I looked ahead, the tree tops were getting closer.
"It's just up ahead," I said.
"I know." She glanced around. I spotted two watchers, one at the entrance to a dead end and the other on someone's balcony.
"Why did you stop?" I asked her, curious.
"I feel like we are being watched," she said.
I looked around, a few people walked on by. Nothing seemed suspicious.
"Are you sure?" I asked her.
"You know what, never mind." She took off again.
I looked around, nothing still seemed suspicious. I prepped myself and ran with the wind. We ran towards the outskirts of the town, I knew we lived close to it though.
There were no more houses in this part of the town. Tia was a few feet in front of me. We walked into the forest like area. The trees here were huge. A main road snaked up straight forward, probably not another town, but we were safe within the confines of the tall trees.
We walked silently, and I didn't say a word, Tia didn't either. The only sounds around us being the rustling of leaves under our feet and the indistinct chirping of crickets. We walked deeper and deeper into the trees and then I started to hear a high pitched whistle. I smiled, I was going Supreme—that's what I called it.
Tia stopped walking, I didn't notice, so I bumped into her.
"Sorry," I said.
She looked straight into my eyes, mouth slightly parted.
"What?"
"Your eyes... They are... They've changed."
"Changed? How?" I asked anxiously.
"You are beautiful..." She sighed.
"Huh?"
"Oh, err... They are like lavender," She said, still smiling.
"Wow, I wish I could see them." And I subconsciously touched the skin just right below my eyes.
"Oh, you are doing that thing when you see through objects?" She asked.
"Yeah..." But my vision was still as normal as ever.
I peered closely at a small thicket and then it disappeared behind diverging purplish streaks of light.
"Whoa..." I sighed. I could see the base of the tree behind it. I tried squinting, focusing my see-through eyes on the tree and then it too diverged away, and I saw more trees behind it. They disappeared as well, and at a far distance I could see a deer grazing away at the grass.
"Err... I got something. A deer, a deer," I said aloud, trying as much as I could to keep focus.
"Really, how far from here?" She asked.
"Err... About fifty meters," I said, unsure.
"Okay let's go..." She tugged at my arm. She started walking straight ahead, around trees and small thickets. She walked fast but cautiously and I treaded upon the dead leaves slowly.
We closed in on the deer but knelt behind a thicker.
"Watch," She told me. She crept around the thicker and then a heard the small crack sound. She sped out from where she hid, the poor animal never even saw it coming, jumped at the deer grabbed it and rolled over with the animal.
I watched bewildered. The animal was on its side, kicking its limbs in the air frantically. She squeezed at its throat, cutting off air flow to its mouth so it couldn't utter a sound. I saw the red glint in her eyes as she hissed and opened her mouth wide. Her canines grew out and for a moment she didn't look like beautiful, pretty smile Tia, but rather like a demon.
She bit down at its neck, the animal kicked hard again before finally... It stopped and I saw its eyes blacken like a thick fog had been released inside its skull.
"Wow." I stepped out from where I crouched. "You are amazing," I said but the red glint was still in her eyes.
"Hey, what's up with the eyes? They've like turned black..." My voice trailed off as I looked at Tia who was looking at me with the same hunger she did, when she bit the deer.
"Tia?" My heart skipped a beat. She didn't look like herself anymore; her features seemed to morph into something more demonic.
She took a step towards me and I took one back.
"Tia, if this is a joke..."
She jumped at me. The red glint in her eyes glowing even brighter. I tried to jump back but she had taken me unaware. She slammed into me with a knee, sending me to the ground.
"Tia!?" I shouted. She didn't look like herself, more like a beast.
She pinned me down with both her hands, pushing my wrists to the ground. I tried pulling them free but the fear that overwhelmed me dampened my strength. She hissed again, bringing her face slowly closer to mine.
I looked straight into her eyes, the red glint was growing and her canines were even longer now.
"Tia, I know you are in there..."
But I could barely even recognize her now, and she took her face from mine and slowly took it towards my neck.
"Please don't..." I plead with her.
I felt her teeth digging into my skin slowly.
"Tia, don't make me do this..." I had contracted all the muscles in my back and legs for takeoff, my plan was to throw myself off the ground with enough force to throw her off me, then pin her down.
I felt her warm breath against my neck; my heart was pounding against my chest and my breathing heavy. I felt the blood pounding in my ears. I was about to lift off the ground when she said.
"Did I scare you?" Her voice was calm and soothing.
She burst into an uncontrolled laugh, falling to the side and rolling on the ground. I got to a sitting position, still breathing heavily. It was all just an act.
"It wasn't funny Tia," I said, I was somewhere inbetween anger and relief. I massaged the spot her fangs had pricked my skin, the injury was already heal up.
"Really, you scared me white," I said.
She was still laughing. She pushed me down playfully and got back on me.
"We're you that scared?" She asked, still laughing. "Did you wet your pants?"
This time I laughed along.
She lay down on me, her hands beside my head using her fingers to play with my hair. She was flat on against me yet she felt lighter than I had expected. I looked straight into her blue orbs. She was still chuckling slightly but then she stopped and silence fell between us.
She bit her lower lip and then slowly took her face to the side of mine, kissing me slowly on the side of face. I felt heat rush to my face. She kissed me on the right cheek again and again, each kiss lower or higher than the last.
It was then that I realized that I was enjoying it, no like really enjoying it. Like 'falling-in-love-with-Tia' kind of enjoyment.
Tia had started kissing my neck when I rolled her over and got on top of her. She smiled widely and then I kissed her lips. We didn't need to breathe so we could hold it for as long as we wanted. She wrapped her hands around my neck and I placed a hand on the left side of her face.
"Do you like it?" I asked her in between a kiss.
"Yes," She whispered.
I kissed her, seizing her lower lip in between mine. She giggled softly and then I kissed slowly down her neck until I got to her collar bone and I heard her groaned slightly. Her eyes were closed but she was still smiling. I kissed her lips again, slower this time and she kissed me back.
We paused, and she looked me straight in the eye. Her heart beat had increased and her pulse was up.
"Tia... I think I—." I would have said 'I think I love you' But then I remembered Dawn and how I had felt when I had her in my arms.
‘What I'm I doing?!' I mentally asked myself.
"No… this is not right," I said, and I rolled off her. I saw her confused
"What? What is it?" She asked, vaguely perplexed.
"It's nothing, I-I… I'm just hungry," I said.
She looked intensely into my eyes for a moment.
"I'm sorry; I shouldn't have started kissing you." She said nervously but I didn't want her to feel on the wrong. If I didn't like it then I should have told her to stop but the fact that I kissed her as well meant that I did enjoy it, and she had nothing to be sorry for.
"No! You don't have to be sorry for anything I… I liked it okay." I said.
"Then why did you stop?" She asked.
I didn't even know what to say, ‘Dawn?' That would hurt her feelings and it's not like I didn't like Tia, in fact, I liked her to a point that it would be fair to say I was in love in her.
"I-I don't know. Maybe it's just the hunger." I felt guilty for lying to her this way. She deserved to know the truth but what if she told the others? What would Jhan say if he figured out I had fallen in love with a human girl who just lived down the streets?
It was bad enough we even made human friends yet alone fall in love with one. Our worlds were just too different for us to be together yet I still felt a strong attraction towards Dawn, an attraction that got stronger every time I thought about her.
"You should eat," She said, pointing at the dead deer.
"Oh, yeah."
I walked to the animal, finding the holes Tia had created with her fangs. I perceived its blood, a sudden hunger came over me and I felt a tingling sensation as my canines elongated. I pierced them into the holes and the blood seemed to be drawn into my mouth automatically. Once I started I couldn't stop. I pulled harder and harder with my lips, drawing more and more blood. Satisfying my long hunger.
The animal was all out in less than ten minutes and I felt like a grave burden had been lifted off my shoulders.
I huffed out hoarsely. "That was good..."
"Ugh, you didn't save any for me," Tia whined.
"I'm sorry I—"
"Don't worry I eat almost every night," She said waving me off.
I heard a low growl; I looked at Tia and saw that she had heard it to. I tuned into Supreme vision (that's what I called it) and scanned the area. I easily spotted a four legged animal a distance away. I smiled; this could be a chance to try hunting myself. More seemed to appear from nowhere. There were now three in number, and I realized that these animals didn't look anything like deers, rather like wolves.
"Are wolves in this part of the forest Tia?" I asked.
"I can't see how you see Kaldar," She said.
"Oh." I had indeed forgotten.
"What do they look like?" She asked.
"Like…" Colour drained out of me as I remembered what I had read about certain humans that could change their form into powerful wolf-like beasts prey on vampires, "The Lobo."
I looked at her, her face had gone pale—stark white.
"Oh no, we need to get out of here now Kaldar like now," She sounded scared, it frightened me even more.
"I thought they were myths…" I trailed off in fear.
"We shouldn't have come here..." She was shaking with fear and so was I.
"We have to get out of here!" She said.
I looked at the beasts, they were now looking straight in our direction.
"Oh no, Tia... I think they know we are here," I could feel my limbs trembling and I couldn't control them. I was frozen to the spot and for a moment I seemed to have zoned out Tia's freighted rambling. I looked at the creatures; suddenly they all dashed out in our direction.
It was either die right there, right then, or at least try to survive. And I knew what to do. Run.
