Chapter Fifteen (Amaya)

“What do you mean half witch? I have done nothing like that before.” My mind was reeling. There was no way this was real, it couldn’t be.

“In your time, magic didn’t exist, so you couldn’t tap into your abilities.” Sin shared.

“Is that why you brought me here?” I asked, my voice getting louder.

“I brought you here so you would make a deal with me. Remember? Are you ready to do so?” he smiled hopefully.

“No, I’m not making a deal with you, but I also know you are hiding something, and you have more than this deal on your mind in this specific time, otherwise why choose this time? Why would you drop me with someone you obviously know?” I argued, wanting to know the truth. “And why would you pick up some random orphan girl who means nothing, there were other people at the café that day, so why me?”

He walked over to me and looking down into my eyes. “I want to tell you everything, little flame, but right now I can’t. All I can say is that when I can, I will tell you everything.” He shared before, he kissed my forehead and disappeared into his flames.

“That asshole!” How day he just up and disappear? I wanted an explanation, why would he bring me here? Why was this time so bloody important?

“Language.” Abigail reminded me, walking out of the room Samuel was in.

“Where did you disappear to?” I asked when had she even left.

“I had to check on my patient dear, you slapped the injured man so hard.” She noted sarcastically as she smiled.

I sighed and sat in the chair by the table as she walked over.

She walked over to me and stiffly kneeled down in front of me, looking me in the eyes, “If you are worried, I will tell someone about your… abilities, I won’t. I will help you figure them out, I am a witch as well and you can trust me. You are not alone anymore, and I am so sorry that you were abandoned when you were but a babe. You are like family to me, Amaya.”

Her words hit harder than they should have. Why should she be apologizing? She didn’t do anything wrong, yet when she said I was no longer alone, my vision blurred as I fought back the tears that wanted to fall as Abigail stood and hugged me, rubbing my back as I sobbed into her shoulder.

She released me and I wiped my face on the handkerchief she had handed me. Then, putting her hands on her hips, she declared, “time to work, if you are ok with our patient, I need to run to town and pick up more supplies.” Her eyes were red, too. Had she been crying as well?

I nodded, “I’ll monitor him while you are out.”

I went to check on Samuel after Abigail had left. He was sleeping; he was a very attractive man, his dark hair and blue eyes were hypnotizing like I didn’t have any control over my body, what exactly happened earlier anyway? I was angry that he had kissed me, but was he fully to blame?

I touched my lips, remembering his on mine, before shaking my head and turning to leave.

“Wait?” Samuel asked quietly.

I spun around and looked to look at him, “what do you need?” I replied.

He sat up and looked at me, his muscled chest exposed; he is a very attractive man; I noted. “Why are you always wearing that hat?” I asked, noting he never took it off.

He shrugged, “sentimental reasons.” He brushed it off. “I want to apologize for earlier. I shouldn’t have kissed you without your voiced consent. Sometimes I lose myself and can be impulsive.”

“Just don’t do it again.” I replied, my face heating.

He moved and grimaced in pain, “do you need something for pain?” I asked, sitting next to him, looking over his injuries.

He shook his head no, I am fine, he reached out to hold my hand, “can you sit with me for a while?”

I nodded, if I am going to sit here with him, he can answer some questions. “Where are your parents?”

“Pardon?”

“It’s just everyone in town is related and has grown up here, but you never mention your parents and neither does Abigail.”

“My father… passed away and my mother and I aren’t on the best terms, which is why I came to see the Pastor Gideon, he used to preach in my hometown, and I decided to follow him here. I wanted to make a fresh start."

“Are you a pastor?”

He scoffed, “No, too many rules for me.” He chuckled. “What about you, where are your parents?” he asked.

Hmm, what can I say, boy did I open a can of worms. “I came here to help my grandmother, my father sent me because she is getting on in years and needs the help.” I lied, how could I explain that I was abandoned at a fire station and adopted, then time travelled and was taken in by Abigail?

He studied my face for a while before nodding. “Seems we all have our secrets.” He noted his voice sounded angry for a moment. “So, what do you do for fun around here?”

“For fun?” I asked, “There is no fun, we survive, do chores, and exist. That is our life. If we frolicked around having fun, we wouldn’t have supplies for winter and wouldn’t be able to help the injured.” I noted, realizing how difficult living in this time really was.

“Still, you have friends you visit and talk to when you go to town, don’t you?”

I shook my head, “I just arrived here so I don’t know anyone, really.”

“You have met no one at the church?” He asked, surprised.

“No, we haven’t gone yet.” I blurted.

“We will attend on Sunday.” Abigail spoke as she entered the room, narrowing her eyes at Samuel. “You should rest, Samuel.” She scolded him as I stood to leave.

“I best get my chores done.” I shared before exiting the room.

“Talk to you later, Little Dove.”
