#24 My baby's father
Evelyn's POV
When my eyes fluttered open, I was into a hospital room. A silent sigh escaped my lips, and I closed my eyes once again. I was still very exhausted.
Suddenly the earlier events came back to my mind; I had collapsed into the meeting room, and I woke up in an ambulance towards the hospital. The paramedics examined me, but my state wasn't that critical.
At the hospital, Naomi and Owen were waiting for me in the Emergency Room. They both ran some tests before reassuring me that both my heart and the baby were okay. They scolded me for not following their advice and instructions. I was dehydrated and physically exhausted by all the workload I'd been given the past couple of days.
The two doctors said that I had to stay there for a day to monitor my vitals, so I was moved into this room. Not having enough energy to do anything else, I just drifted into a deep slumber.
A sigh and a murmur were heard from the other side of the room. I concentrated, trying to understand who was there with me. I peeked a look through my half-closed eyelids and instantly recognized Sebastian's figure.
What was he doing there?
There was no way to go back to sleep when he was in the same room with me. Thus, I opened my eyes and tried to readjust my position.
"Evelyn, finally! How are you feeling?" my Boss asked, turning to look at me with concern.
I frowned a bit, taken aback by his sudden change of behavior. "I'm fine. Why are you here?" I asked, pulling the bed sheets to cover my body since I was wearing only that hospital gown.
"Why didn't you tell me about the baby?" Sebastian countered back, his eyes shooting daggers at me.
Did he know about my pregnancy? Did the doctors tell him?
But then again, the doctors didn't know who the father was…
"Which baby?" I whispered, looking down at the IV in my hand.
"Evelyn, don't make me repeat myself…" Sebastian warned me.
"Well, I don't think there's anything you should be concerned about, Sebastian," I hissed, glaring at him.
"It's my baby, too, Evelyn. You shouldn't have kept it from me!"
"Your baby? Oh, come on, Sebastian, you clearly said that what happened in Greece stays in Greece…"
"But that's completely different. This baby will be mine, too. He or she will be my heir," the man said, his voice louder than before.
"That's what this baby will be for you, Sebastian? Only an heir? You don't give a shit about my health or even your unborn child's health, do you?" I asked, trying to hold back the tears that threatened to run down my cheeks.
"What do you mean? What's wrong?" the man asked, looking confused.
"The pregnancy might put my life in danger, Sebastian. But that's not the only problem; the baby might have the same heart condition as I did when I was born. The doctors will have to monitor both of us closely," I explained, placing a hand above my tummy.
Sebastian walked closer to my bed and sat at the end, placing his hand above mine. It felt strange, and for a moment, I let the warmth of his hand console me.
"It will be okay, Evelyn. I promise you; I'll do my best to protect both of you, okay?" the man said in a low voice, rubbing the back of my hand softly.
I pulled my hand out of his, and I was about to shout at him that I didn't want nor needed his help, but the door of the room burst open.
"Oh, great! You're awake, Evelyn. How are you feeling?" Owen asked as he waltzed into the room.
"I'm better. Thank you, Dr. McWaters," I replied with a small smile.
"That's great. Dr. Hunt will be here in a few minutes to examine you," the doctor continued as he sent a glare towards Sebastian's way.
"I think I asked for another doctor to replace you," Sebastian hissed, standing up from my bed.
I turned to look at him in surprise. "You did what?" I squealed, my blood pressure rising.
"I don't want him as your doctor. It's simple," my Boss shrugged nonchalantly.
"And like I said before, this is not your choice, Mr. Leclair," the red-hair man retorted.
"Of course, it is. I don't trust you with my unborn child's life!" Sebastian seethed.
"We're yet to confirm this information. But then again, this will be Evelyn's choice. It's her body, her health, her baby. You're not her husband, fiancé, or anything in that sort."
"Owen, stop it," I exclaimed, but they ignored me.
"Not yet, but that's irrelevant. Does this hospital have any other obstetricians, or should we go to a better one?" Sebastian asked cockily.
Not yet? What was that supposed to mean now? I didn't have more time to think, though, because the two men kept shouting threats at each other.
"Just because you have money and power doesn't mean you can order people around. Especially not in this hospital," Owen stated, taking a few steps towards Sebastian.
"Oh, just wait and see what money and power do in this word," Sebastian chuckled.
"You can shove them in your ass if you keep treating her like this," the redhead man challenged my Boss.
"What exactly are you insinuating?" Sebastian asked threateningly, closing the distance between the two of them.
"You know all too well. You're the one responsible for her condition," Owen stated, pointing a finger towards my Boss.
"Enough! Both of you stop!" I yelled, not standing this madness any longer.
"Stop? Are you serious, Evelyn? This man treats you like shit, and you just tolerate everything?" Owen shouted at me this time.
"Don't you yell at her!" Sebastian hissed; his hands balled in fists.
"What are you going to do, huh?" the doctor mocked Sebastian, pushing his shoulder.
Sebastian threw the first fist that landed on Owen's jaw. For a few moments, I stood there frozen, looking at the two men exchanging punches, dodging, and hitting one another. They kept yelling and calling each other names. This felt strangely like what high school should have been...
"Stop! Sebastian! Owen!" I yelled at them but didn't dare to go any closer.
I pressed a button repeatedly so that one of the nurses could come into the room.
When the door opened, Nickolas strolled in. He was shocked by the two men fighting like teenagers. Nick marched towards, trying to separate the two men, and thankfully a few other doctors and a nurse came into the room.
"Enough!" a voice boomed, making everyone into the room freeze.
I turned to look at Dr. Hunt with relief. My eyes were burning with unshed tears, and I was dizzy once again.
"This is a hospital, not an underground fight club. And you both are smart and educated men, what has gotten into you?" Dr. Hunt scolded Owen and Sebastian.
He was right; a doctor and a multimillionaire CEO fighting like two hormonal teenagers was a rare sight. I looked at the two men; Sebastian's nose was bleeding, and he had a cut on his forehead. Owen had his left eye half-closed- a bruise would definitely form there later- and cuts on his lips and temple. Their knuckles were bruised and bleeding.
Sebastian was about to retort something, but Dr. Hunt cut him. "Just go and clean yourselves. A nurse can help you with your wounds. And stay out of my sight for today," the middle-aged man ordered.
A sigh escaped my lips as the two men left the room and the door finally closed behind them.
"Are you okay, Miss Russell? Did they hurt you?" Dr. Hunt asked when we were alone.
"I'm just a bit shaken up. I'm sorry, sir, I couldn't stop them…" I apologized, looking down at my intertwined hands.
"I should be the one apologizing for Owen's behavior. He had no right to act that way inside a patient's room," the man replied, shaking his head.
"Well, Sebastian wasn't entirely innocent either…" I trailed off.
"Men and testosterone…" the doctor chuckled as a nurse came inside the room with a portable ultrasound machine.
Dr. Hunt examined and reassured me once again that everything looked okay with the baby.
"So, you didn't feel any pain on your back or abdomen, right?"
"No, sir. I was just dizzy and collapsed."
"There's no sign of bleeding, plus your baby's vitals are looking fine," the doctor summarized.
"That's a relief. Does this mean I'm free to go?"
"I'd rather have you stay here for the night. We can discharge you tomorrow morning," the man replied, scribbling something on my medical record.
I nodded and sighed. I had to let my parents and Sophie know about what happened. They must have gone crazy with worry.
"Miss Russell, Mr. Leclair claims he's the father of your baby. Is this true?" the man asked, bringing me back to reality.
"Yes, that is correct; Sebastian Leclair is my baby's father," I replied, looking at the dark sky outside the window.
"Well then, I suppose I can ask him about his medical history and the other things we need to know…" the man trailed off.
I simply nodded since I had no choice. The doctors had to make sure that my baby would be born healthy. It was up to Sebastian to answer the questions…
After checking a few other things, Dr. Hunt exited the room. I didn't have a moment to recollect my thoughts as Nickolas, Sophie, and my parents burst into the room.
"Evelyn, why didn't you call us?" my mom exclaimed, rushing to my side.
"Seriously, Sebastian is the father, and you didn't tell me?" Sophie chirped in.
"I'll be an uncle!" Nickolas chuckled.
I rolled my eyes at all of them. And tried to brush off my mother's hands as she kept checking on me.
"Mom, I'm fine. I should have paid attention to doctors' orders and not overstress myself. But I'm okay, and so is the baby," I said.
"We were so worried about you, little girl," my dad muttered, ruffling my hair.
I gave him a small smile, and my mom pecked my temple lovingly.
"How did you guys know I was here?" I asked, looking at them curiously.
"Nick called me and explained what happened, and then I called your parents, and we all met here," Sophie explained to me.
I nodded and sent a grin towards Nick's way; he was so thoughtful.
They stayed with me until I ate all the food my mom had prepared for me. They were excited about my pregnancy and kept making plans about the baby being born. Nick informed that Sebastian was okay, besides his minor injuries. After our small talk, I was exhausted, so they just left me to sleep.
The next morning Naomi and Dr. Hunt checked up on me once again. Since everything was okay, they gave me the green light to leave the hospital. A nurse helped me with the IV catheter, and then I wore the clothes Sophie had brought for me the previous night.
Sebastian entered the room while I was lacing my shoes.
"Good morning. How are you today, Evelyn?" the man asked.
"I'm great, thank you," I replied, looking at him with knitted eyebrows.
Sebastian was wearing one of his tailor-made Italian suits. He had a pair of eyeglasses on, probably to hide the fight's results. A few other small cuts were obvious, ruining his perfect image.
"Okay, good. I'm here to take you home," the man replied and started lifting my bags up.
"There's no need, sir. My dad will be here any time soon," I tried to politely decline.
"I have many things to discuss with you. You're coming with me…" the man ordered, giving me a glare that sent cold chills down my spine.
What was he up to now?
