#38 Doubts and reassurance
During the following days, my baby's father became more distant. At first, I thought it was mostly because of the workload he had. Sebastian stopped coming back home to have lunch with me, and sometimes he was late for dinner. He didn't spend so much time with me, and we didn't talk as much as I wanted. There were even a few nights that he didn't want to have sex with me.
It was like he was avoiding me…
The part of the fight he had with Nickolas played on my mind repeatedly. I couldn't understand the exact reason for their argument was, and I started to doubt that the CEO's position was the cause.
Sebastian never brought up the matter again, nor did I ask. It didn't matter to me whether he was the CEO or just a simple man, as long as he was a loving father for our daughter and a caring partner to me. I knew how important his job and the company were for him. His intention to give up everything and spend time with our child and me was more than enough for me.
Despite the small changes in his attitude, he still cared for my health and enjoyed putting his hands around my baby bump. Sebastian read children's books and talked to my belly so that the baby would get used to his voice and presence, too. Plus, that little habit helped us bond and was beneficial for our daughter's language development.
Except for my work and the tasks I had to complete daily, I had enough time to read several books about pregnancy and children's psychology and development. The billionaire asked me to keep notes of the most important things I learned. However, I also caught him reading one of the books in his free time.
We were trying to be the best parents this baby could have. That's why his sudden change was once again indecipherable. I couldn't stop thinking that something was wrong; something felt off…
I had to talk with Sebastian to sort things out and see what was troubling him. Thus, I decided to prepare lunch and go find him in the company. He had already informed me that he couldn't come back to have lunch with me, so I found the perfect excuse to go there. In this way, we could see each other, and I'd save him some time since he couldn't return to the house.
Martha helped me prepare his favorite lunch, and I made a phone call to verify that he didn't have any meetings during the lunch break. I asked his assistant not to inform Sebastian about my plan to go there; I wanted to surprise him.
It felt weird to go back into the building where it all started. I was working there as a secretary, and now I was dating the CEO. Well, this definitely looked like the storyline of the romance books I loved reading.
One of the chauffeurs drove me to the Leclair Corp. building. The skyscraper was as intimidating as the first time I saw it. I noticed several familiar faces, but now I was sure that many of them gazed at me with jealousy or hatred. They certainly thought of me as a whore who managed to seduce the billionaire and find her happily ever after.
If only that was the ending to our story...
The code that led me straight to the top floor was the same. I was more anxious now than when I worked for Sebastian, and my legs were shaking. Thanks to my pregnancy, I was able to ditch the high heels and wear flats all the time. And at that moment, I was grateful that I wasn't wearing five-inch pumps.
"Miss Russell, I'm so happy to finally meet you," Jerry, Sebastian's assistant, exclaimed when he saw me.
"The pleasure is all mine, Jerry. You're the only one who lasted more than a month…" I chuckled, shaking his hand.
"I'm trying my best, Madam," the man replied with a polite smile, but his brown eyes glistened with an ounce of pride.
"It's Evelyn, Jerry. Is Mr. Leclair free?"
"He was on a phone call, but you can go in. I don't think he would mind," Jerry replied.
I thanked him and walked towards Sebastian's office, a route I've done numerous times in the past. However, everything felt different now. Taking a deep breath, I knocked on the closed door and waited for his permission to go in.
The office was just like what I remembered, although I could see the piles of paperwork on top of Sebastian's desk. The billionaire was sitting on his chair, carefully reading something on his computer. My core tingled seeing his professional demeanor, and my mind filled with inappropriate thoughts.
"Evelyn? What are you doing here?" Sebastian asked once he sensed my presence.
"I brought you lunch since you couldn't come home," I replied, batting my eyelashes at him.
"Sweetheart, there was no need to get into all this trouble. I'd order something to eat," the billionaire replied.
"Well, I also want to spend some more time with you. You're very busy lately, and I miss you…" I added, looking at the CEO with a small pout.
Sebastian's expression softened. He stood up and walked closer to me.
"I'm sorry for neglecting you lately," he muttered, pecking my lips softly.
"There's no need to apologize, Sebastian. I might have missed the office, too…"
The CEO chuckled and looked at me with a raised eyebrow. "You missed the office more than me?"
"I miss being with you, but now I doubt my decision of coming here…"
"And why's that?" he asked with a smirk plastered on his lips.
"Oh well, some of my fantasies might have awakened," I replied, blushing a bit.
Sebastian chuckled and kissed me more passionately this time. I missed his scent, the feel of his skin under my fingertips, his tongue devouring me…
"I want to eat before I fuck you on my desk…" the billionaire whispered in a hoarse voice.
I nodded and looked down at the bag I was holding.
Sebastian helped me set our lunch on the glass table at the other end of his office. We started eating in silence, and after a while, Sebastian complimented our cooking skills. Indeed, the chicken curry with rice we made was delicious.
"Sebastian, I know that something is troubling you lately… Do you feel like talking?" I asked, breaking the awkward silence.
The billionaire looked lost in his thoughts for a few moments, and then, he shook his head. "Nothing you need to worry about, Evelyn. We just have more work than usual," he replied, giving me a reassuring smile.
"You act differently, and I'm worried…"
"I'm sorry, love, I didn't want to stress you. It's just something work-related."
"You don't trust me enough to tell me, do you?" I countered back.
"Evelyn, I talked to you about my past; you shared with me your problems. I thought we had left the trust issues behind and made a new beginning," he replied.
"Then why are you avoiding me? And don't tell me again it's because of work because it's not. I'm not that stupid! I know that something is wrong. Did I do something to hurt your feelings? Are you mad with me?" I blurted out.
"My love, everything is okay. Please, take a few deep breaths. It's not good to stress yourself so much," Sebastian said in a calm voice and caressed the back of my hand softly.
I inhaled deeply and exhaled a few times, trying to steady my heartbeat. Despite his reassuring words, I couldn't shake that feeling creeping inside me. Something felt off, but I couldn't tell what it was precisely…
"You don't have to quit the CEO's position of the Leclair Corp. I know how important this company is for you, and I want you to be happy…" I muttered after a few minutes.
The billionaire looked taken aback by my words, and a small frown formed between his eyebrows. His grey eyes darkened as he gazed from his plate to my light blue orbs.
"Nickolas isn't very fond of the idea. But I wouldn't mind stepping down for a couple of years. Besides, I doubt my brother could handle everything for too long. I need a break, too, and this will be the perfect opportunity."
I slowly nodded as I let his words register in my mind. He was right and seemed determined to grab this opportunity. I was glad this wasn't the problem. And at the same time, I didn't have any other excuse or possible reason for his weird attitude.
"So, everything is fine?" I asked once again.
"Of course, it is, my love," Sebastian replied, pecking my knuckles softly.
I wanted to believe him, and that's what I did.
If only I knew this was only the beginning of our end...
"You're sexy when you're angry and jealous," Sebastian muttered in a husky voice.
I rolled my eyes at him and took another bite of my food.
Sebastian left more kisses on my palm and fingertips, making me blush.
"We need to finish our meal…" I tried to stop him.
"I'm done and want my dessert," the billionaire purred.
I bit my lower lip and eyed him through my long eyelashes. "Don't you have any other meetings to attend?"
The man groaned in annoyance, and he stood up to walk towards his office. He dialed a number angrily and then growled at the phone, "Jerry, cancel my next meeting…"
A small smile appeared on my lips, and I turned to look at him as my core tingled with excitement.
"Miss Russell, come here, please," Sebastian ordered.
"Yes, sir!" I replied right away.
It was high time for one of my fantasies to come true…
