#40 It takes only a few words
That morning was the last one I woke up in Sebastian's bed, but he was nowhere to be seen. I had a bath, ate the breakfast Martha had cooked for me and dressed up. I had another appointment at the hospital for the usual check-up.
I had reached the twenty-sixth week of my pregnancy without any complications. My morning sickness was long gone, my cravings were giving Nick a reason to tease me, and my mood swings made me quite sensitive.
Sebastian wasn't that distant like before, or at least, he was covering it up better now. He asked me to bring his lunch to the company a few other times. However, sometimes Sebastian wasn't paying attention to what I was saying and seemed lost in his thoughts. It wasn't something specific, so I tried to ease my worries with the same excuse he had used: work.
Nickolas also confirmed they were working on an important deal and that Sebastian was very stressed about this. It was a deal that could earn them a few more billions… Thus, I understood how serious the whole situation was.
Despite all his worries, the billionaire thought it would be a great idea to come up with a name for our daughter. We talked a lot about different baby names, searched the origin of our favorite ones, and found a few possible nicknames for our daughter. I was thrilled with his idea, and I had another proof that nothing was wrong…
Or so I thought. Because Sebastian tried his hardest not to upset me until all hell broke loose…
Martha informed me that my baby's father couldn't come to the hospital with me that day. He had obviously too much work to do. This was the first time the billionaire would miss one of the check-ups, so it didn't bother me that much. He could surely attend all the upcoming ones.
The procedure was familiar to me; we did an ultrasound for the baby and a cardiological examination for my heart. The baby was fine, but Naomi found my blood pressure a bit elevated. She gave me some other pills and advised me to rest and not stress myself during the upcoming days. Considering my medical history and the pregnancy, we wanted to be extra careful.
My mind was filled with worry, like when I found out about my baby. It shouldn't be something concerning, but the possible scenarios were many, and not all were good...
The moment I was exiting the building, I saw Owen coming my way.
A huge smile appeared on my lips, and I greeted him once we were within arms' reach. "We must stop meeting randomly, Dr. McWaters…"
"I'm sorry, Evelyn. We had a lot of work lately…" Owen apologized while he gave me a hug.
"You're not the only one…" I grumbled.
"Are you still working for Sebastian?" the man questioned as he leaned back to look at me.
"No, I'm working from home for a publishing house. Sebastian is the one being very busy lately…"
"Oh, that's why he isn't here, right?"
"Yes, he has some meetings which can't be postponed," I replied with a sad smile.
"It's alright; I'm sure he didn't miss anything important. You're getting bigger with every passing day, though. Plus, you're more beautiful than ever," the red-haired man complimented me.
"Thank you, Owen," I answered while a blush crept on my cheeks.
"How about we go for lunch? Do you have any other plans?"
I made a quick mental check of my schedule before replying, "Sounds perfect. I'd love that!"
Owen offered me his arm to take and led us to a restaurant close to the hospital.
With the corner of my eyes, I caught sight of Sebastian's driver following us closely. Apparently, the man wasn't supposed to be only a chauffeur…
"So, how did the check-up go today?" Owen asked when we took our seats into our booth.
"The baby's fine; she's growing without any complication. Naomi found my blood pressure higher than usual. My medication is altered, and I must monitor my pressure and rest…" I sighed.
"You might be more stressed. We're going to do a close monitoring for the next few days," Owen replied as a frown formed on his forehead.
"Is it something concerning?"
"Did they ask for a urine sample?" Owen countered back.
"Yes, I gave them the sample. However, the results are yet to be confirmed," I replied.
"Most probably, it isn't something worrying, but we must wait a few more days," Owen stated, giving me a comforting smile.
A waiter came, and we placed our orders. My stomach was once again grumbling, and my daughter greeted me with a soft kick, probably approving the choice I made for our lunch.
"Why are you smiling? Did you feel a movement?" Owen asked once we were alone again.
My grin grew broader, and I nodded. "Yes! She must be hungry, and I get cranky when I want to eat."
"I wish I could say I'm sorry about Sebastian, but I'm not," Owen chuckled.
"He's quite patient with my cravings and my mood swings, actually."
"You managed to tame the ruthless billionaire, didn't you?"
"Sebastian had been through a lot, just like me. His fiancée died in a terrible accident a few months before their wedding. He had a hard time accepting her death..." I explained because I didn't want Owen to have a false impression of the man I loved.
Owen looked lost in his thoughts for a few moments.
The waiter brought us our order, easing the tension between us.
"Are you really dating him?" Owen questioned when we were alone.
I took in a deep breath and blinked a few times before replying. "At first, we were pretending to be together, but soon enough, we realized that we have feelings for each other. Despite everything he had done to me, I can't stop caring about him."
Owen frowned, and I could tell that my words hurt him. But this was the truth, and I wasn't afraid to scream it to the whole world.
"I'm sorry if I misled you. It wasn't my intention to hurt your feelings. It's ironic how sometimes we fell for the wrong people, yet it feels so right…" I continued when he didn't speak.
Owen sighed and then gave me a sad smile. "We can't escape our destiny, nor alter our fate. I understand how you feel for him, and I'm happy that you've found your special someone."
A beaming smile formed on my lips. Owen was so kind and understanding; he was a true gentleman.
"Thank you, Owen. Your words mean a lot to me," I replied, trying to hold back my tears.
"Fuck, please don't cry! Your billionaire will murder me!" the doctor looked at me with a frown.
"If this was the case, he should have killed Sophie and Nickolas, burn my books, and shatter our TV by now..." I chuckled.
"Oh my, you cry with almost everything," Owen said in between his laughs.
We ate our meal, doing some small talk. Owen was busy working or preparing a project he was planning to publish. He also told me that he had started dating a nurse from another department. It was cute to see him blushing when he talked about her.
Suddenly my phone rang, startling both of us. I fished it out of my shoulder bag and frowned when I saw Sebastian's name flashing on the screen. I mouthed a small apology to the redhead man and picked up the ringing phone.
"Hey! Are you done with your meetings?" I asked Sebastian on the other end of the line.
"Why didn't you call me? How did the tests go?" he countered back, and I sensed the irritation in his voice.
"I know that you're busy, so I texted you. Everything is okay with the baby. But we must monitor my blood pressure for a few days," I replied calmly.
"You should have called me. I might not be there, but I've got every right to know what happened," Sebastian hissed.
"I'm sorry, my love. Shall we discuss the details later tonight?"
"Are you back home? Do you want to come over?" he inquired, ignoring my question.
By the tone of his voice, I was pretty sure he already knew the answer.
"I'm having lunch at a restaurant with a friend," I replied, biting my lower lip.
"Say hi to Sophie from me, please," Sebastian said in a sweet tone.
"I'm not with Sophie, Sebastian…"
"Really? Then with whom are you having lunch?"
"I met Owen on my way out, and we decided to have lunch together," I replied, stealing a glance from the red-haired doctor.
"You didn't call me to inform me about what happened, yet you had time to go out with him…" the billionaire hissed.
I rolled my eyes, although I knew he couldn't see me. "Well, I don't have to explain anything else to you. We'll talk once you're back home," I retorted and hung up the phone.
"Some things never change…" Owen muttered, running his fingers through his hair.
"Well, sometimes he can be a possessive, jealous asshole."
"Evelyn! The baby can hear us," the man scolded me, eyeing my baby bump with a frown.
I pouted and caressed my tummy lovingly. "We do love your father, though," I whispered at my daughter.
"You're going to be a wonderful mother. Sebastian's lucky to have you…"
"We're both lucky. However, I hope it will last," I whispered the last part to myself.
After finishing our lunch, Owen escorted me back to the car. The driver was already there waiting for me. Owen promised to call me to see how my blood pressure was going. We agreed on meeting each other again, besides our random meetings at the hospital.
The ride back home was quiet, except for my running thoughts. Was Sebastian irritated because I didn't call him or because I met Owen? The billionaire knew Owen was nothing more than a friend to me, and I thought he trusted me. We had gone through the same loophole one too many times already. His jealousy and possessiveness had started to irritate me a lot.
Once back home, I had another shower and changed into more comfortable clothes. We had bought a few maternity clothes since my regular ones weren't fitting me anymore. I was always very skinny, but I kind of liked the few pounds I gained thanks to my pregnancy. I looked healthier now, and my curves made Sebastian very happy…
I laid on our bed and dived into the fantasy book I was reading.
My love for literature made my job very enjoyable. Reading books was the most pleasant way to pass my free time since I can remember myself.
I didn't realize how I fell asleep, but when I woke up, the sun was setting. My eyes traveled at the red, orange, and pink skyline behind the tall skyscrapers. The view was breathtaking, and I doubt I could ever get used to it.
My mind went back to Sebastian; had he returned already? Maybe we could have dinner together and discuss everything that happened earlier that day…
I yawned and stretched my body before I stood up from the king-size bed. Absentmindedly, I walked to the hall and headed towards the spacious living room. The penthouse looked strangely quiet until a series of sobs and murmurs reached my ears.
A frown formed in between my eyebrows, and I walked towards the source of the noise. My feet led me in front of the library's door. I just stood there looking at the half-closed door for a few moments. There was definitely someone crying behind that door, and as much as it broke my heart, I knew who it was.
I softly knocked on the door, and when I didn't receive any answer, I turned the doorknob and walked inside the room.
Just like I had imagined, I found Sebastian kneeled in front of that drawer containing Olivia's photos and some of her personal belongings. He was sobbing uncontrollably, and for the first time, I didn't know what to do.
A piercing pain shot through my chest, and my breathing became irregular. The man I loved more than myself was mourning the loss of another woman. What did that mean for me and our relationship? Had he lied to me all these times when he confessed his love and affection?
Ignoring all the signs of my discomfort, I walked closer to the heartbroken man. It might have hurt me seeing him crying over another woman, but I couldn't stop myself from comforting him. I didn't want to see him in pain, and I'd do anything to ease his aching heart.
"Leave me alone!" Sebastian's hoarse voice broke the silence.
I froze on my spot and blinked a few times, trying to realize whether I had heard him correctly. He wanted to be alone, but I had no intention to let him be, especially when he was in that state…
"Sebastian, what's wrong?" I asked in a shaky voice.
"Just go, Evelyn! I can't face you right now!" he hissed, without turning to look at me.
A chill ran down my spine. I had never seen Sebastian in such a terrible condition before.
"Is it about Owen?" I inquired again, taking a step closer to him.
Suddenly, the billionaire stood up and turned to face me. Sebastian's grey eyes were red from all the tears. A vein was bulging on his temple, and trails of dry tears could be seen on his face. His dark grey orbs pierced me, and I was once again afraid of the man standing in front of me.
"You killed her!" Sebastian accused me. His voice seemed strange and felt otherworldly.
I just stared at him, trying to make my mind start functioning again. I had no idea what he was saying, but I managed to whisper my next question. "I did what? What are you talking about?"
Sebastian took another step closer to me. He stared at me with an accusing look that made my blood run cold.
"You killed Olivia! It was you! Not me, not anyone else!" the billionaire blamed me once again, pointing his finger towards me.
Had he lost his mind? How could I have been responsible for Olivia's death? I didn't even know that woman, for goodness sake!
I took a few deep breaths to calm myself before I tried to reason with him, "I wasn't driving that fucking truck!"
And then Sebastian said these few words that changed our lives forever.
A few words and one moment were enough to turn our lives upside down…
"You got her heart! You killed her!"
