Blindsided

Kairios
Though it was my own plan, I had serious concerns. Leaving her alone with that pirate was the largest. She would be out of my sight and too far for me to protect her. This was the best way though. Saira needed my protection more.
We ran through the streets, watching as we went but not trying to hid like we were before. To get across the city would be a feat of its own. More than once, we ran past a street with squads marching. I had no idea how we would get back to the castle after we set the blaze.
Saira had said that she had a plan. A spell that she read of once long ago, before her brother had taken her from her home. How she remembered it from such a long time ago was beyond me. I could only hope that it would work.
“Up there. Those building are old; they will catch the fastest.” Saira said as we ran.
She was right. They were old, made of wood and the only ones that had straw on the roof tops. They would light quickly, though it would make it harder to get away. We ran until we were right in the middle of the houses. She found a small dark alley that connected to a row of housing.
“Okay, this is perfect, I'll watch your back while you work.” I turned my back to her with a knife in my hand at the ready. I watched to the left and looked back to the right. No signs of any demons.
I wondered how Aurelia was. There was no time to look back to see her take to the skies. I just hoped that she went unseen and that fool pirate didn’t draw any attention. I still did not know what she saw in that guy. Behind me I could see the flicker of light on the ground and tensed.
“Run!” Saira yelled as she took off up the street. I followed right behind her.
She rounded corner after corner, flying through the darkness as our feet pounded onto the stones of the road. We were going to make it! The fire was building in our wake, catching as quickly as I thought it would. We had to keep going. If we could keep up this pace then we would be able to make it to the castle in no time.
We rushed around a corner and Saira stopped dead in her tracks before bouncing backwards into me. Her body crashed into me, knocking the wind from my lungs. I stumbled back a few steps and caught her before falling. Her eyes were closed and she didn’t say anything when I shook her.
The fire hard started to put off a lot of heat, I could feel it growing behind us. My burn scars remembered the pain of a similar heat and screamed at me to run. Ahead of us was the bolder demon that had knocked Saira back. I would have to fight him, but with what?
It lifted its arm and started to swing it at us. I threw myself to the ground just in time to see thick mud loaded with rocks shot over us. I rolled her off of me and launched to my feet. I had to draw its attention from her. My knife had fallen from my hand when she hit me, all I had left was my sword. I drew it and assessed the demon.
There had to be a way to get this done, fast. I drew all the power I had and focused it. Water could break down stone if it was strong enough. From what I could see the demon’s only weak spot was around its eyes; every other part of it was covered in hard stone, that was the only mud that I could make out.
I looked around to find a source of water and saw none. What could I do? I had to figure it out fast. The demon raised its hand again and again sending the same muddy rock attack at me. I jumped over and rolled under each of them, only a few stray rocks hit me, leaving small cuts and bruises.
I had to finish this quickly, the heat was growing behind me. Saira was still unconscious on the ground! The power was growing in me, I needed to use it soon or I would lose my hold on it. I jumped over another mud blast and was knocked over by the very thing that I needed.
A water demon had found its way to us! Now I had to fight both of them! The power rolled inside me and I willed it into my arms. If it sent another attack, I would only have to reroute it into the rock demon. I waited for my moment, moving around mud and rock until the water rushed from behind me.
I grabbed onto it with my power and spun it around and right into the face of the rock demon. Please work! I ran to Saira and threw a small amount of the water in her face. She started to sputter and wake up. When I looked back at the rock demon, I had hoped to see it sitting in a pile of its own rubble.
But instead, it had stood strong arm raised to attack again. I had no time to move and was hit hard with the rocks flying out of the mud. My back crashed into a wall and stars crossed over my eyes. What happened? Why didn’t it work?
I needed more! More power, more water! Power swelled quickly within this time. I looked at the water demon and raised both hands at it. I would draw not only its attacks but its body as well. I would take all it had to give, then there was no way that the rock demon would be able to stand against me!
The water started to stream off of the water demons' body and formed a large orb in front of me. I could feel it. The strength and power in it! This was it! All or nothing!
...
Saira
I was still coughing up all the water that had slid down my throat when Kairios threw it in my face. I struggled to remember what happened and how I got in this state. The last thing that I remember was running through the streets so fast that I started to believe we would make it back to her.
Then I hit something hard and everything went black. What had I run into? I opened my eyes and saw stars and even though I had water in my mouth I could taste blood in my mouth. I rolled over onto my stomach and looked around.
What...
What was I looking at? How was this possible? When did he learn... to use his power in such a way? It was horrifying, and beautiful. His hair whipped in the wind around him. As it flashed by, I could see the expression on his face. His teeth were clenched together with such force that I thought his teeth would shatter!
A massive orb rippled in front of him, growing larger and larger. Being fueled by the water demon across the street. Next to it stood a rock demon, the demon that I must have run into. The water demon dropped to the ground in a heaping puddle then flowed into the giant orb.
Kairios shifted his body and sent the orb into a stream straight at the rock demon's eye. I willed my own magic into light and shot it into the water, adding to its power and destructive force.
The combined power of our attack sliced through the rock demon's face, leaving a steady stream of gas emitting from the gapping hole where it’s eye used to be. It worked!
“We have to keep moving.” Kairios asked while walking up to me. “Can you walk?”
“Yes. My body hurts all over but I can still move.” My mouth still stung with the tang of blood. Later I would look for the source, for now I was sure that it wouldn’t be the last of my injuries.
My knees started to shake as I tried to stand and the world became dizzy and my vision blurry. I willed my muscles to listen and move, bagged my body to continue fighting, I had to give my all or it would be worth nothing. The city started to reek of fire and death.
When we first arrived I noticed the absence of smells like these but as we drew close to our goal, the scents started to return. Was it magic? Some spell my brother cast that was starting to fall apart? I couldn’t think of any spell with such a purpose. For now I guess that it did not matter.
I had to fight through the pain a grog that clouded my mind and body. Each step I took was harder than the last. My body seemed to scream at me to lay down and rest. My crystal burned from the inside of my clothing, urging me to heal my wounds. I laid my hand over it and let the healing rush from my arm throughout my body. Soon the taste of blood was a distant memory.
We ran through the city towards the castle. The streets were filled with various types of demons. Luckily we went unnoticed in the shadows. Instead of running full tilt like we had been, each corner we slowed down to make sure it was clear. Our journey had gone longer than we had planned. Did Aurelia move on? Would she wait for us?
I thought I could sense her through our connected jewelry, but I made my self believe that was wishful thinking. The only thing I could trust was what in front of me. Only the things I could see and touch could be trusted.
Each time I looked up to see how close we were a buzz of fear and excitement ran through me. So close. Each step brought us closer to the final battle. I scanned the skies thinking I would see her. Clear black skies as far as the eyes could see was my only answer. She had to have made it. I looked behind me and saw streams of water and sand shooting into the shrinking flames.
Our diversion had run its course. It was a miracle that we made it this far unnoticed since the last attack. Hope started to flutter in my chest, we were going to make it! Elation surged into my muscles and drove me on harder. Kairios stayed in the lead only by half a step, making sure the path was clear but also needing me to direct us through the chaotic streets.
The closer and closer we got to the castle the more and more my blood would sing with anticipation. Soon he would be gone, soon I would be free and safe. Another corner was coming so we slowed down to round it. We were stopped by a slick black puddle that I at first took for water.
The demon that grew from it was terrifying to behold. It was nothing like the demon’s we had faced before. It’s entire body was made of black sludge and as it moved towards us a chill ran down my spine. It was as if death ran its cold, boney finger down the bumps of my spine.
