Chapter 26
“I… is she crying,” I whispered with quivering lips. “I thought she was unconscious, can she hear anything we say?” I asked curiously.
The doctor moved closer to her bed to observe her. He put on a tiny touch and opened her eyelids to reveal her eyes. They were red.
“Sincerely speaking ma’am,” I don’t know what’s happening,” he whispered, shaking his head.
Silence descended for a while— silence so thick it stood among us like a wall. Only when O’Neal spoke did he break.
“Her souls lingers,” he said out of the blues.
His words were strange, as expected from a strange looking man. He was probably talking trash.
“Pardon,” I butted in. “What do you mean by saying her soul lingers? Kindly shed more light,” I added with a fake smile.
He took one long look at her before he faced me and everyone else in the room. All eyes were now on him as we waited to listen to hear what he had to say.
“I know I might sound weird but I have a feeling that her soul is somewhere…” he paused to see the result of his words on our faces. “…going through something painful right now. A few days ago, her fingers moved. All this just points out that the chances of she coming back alive is very great and it may be sooner than you all think.”
All through the time he spoke, I held my breath. If only he knew of my plans and was aware of the effect of his words on me, he would never have said a word to begin with. If looks could kill, he would have been dead by now with the gaze I sent his way.
Funnily, he was less affected by my looks or attitude towards him, he just ignored it all like I wasn’t there— like I didn’t exist.
This man was more than a pain in the ass.
“So you dare say the doctor is wrong because of your… uh… beliefs or should I say fantasy, uhn?” I asked sarcastically. “Mr supernatural?”
“Say whatever you want, it’s not like I care anyways,” he scoffed, looking away.
I made to say something else when my phone rang. I dipped my hands into my bag and brought it out. Seeing the name of the caller as one of my informants, I picked it up and walked a few steps away from everyone.
“What do you have for me?” I whispered into the phone, careful not to arouse suspicions.
“We just saw Alissia’s lawyer drive into the compound,” he announced.
“Why did he come?” I asked, surprised by the news. The lawyer once worked for Alissia’s father when he was alive. After his death, she had kept him close because he could be trusted. Did they have a secret deal or business together that I am not aware of?
“I am not sure but I believe it has to do with transferring her properties to Bryan” he hinted.
It made a little bit of sense now why he came over but it still didn't. Alissia was in the hospital and there was another Alissia over at her house.
If I hadn’t seen her with my eyes, I would have assumed it was all lies because Alissia got married and she is living with her husband at her mansion.
So who was the imposter? And was she working with Bryan?
“How is that going to be possible, Alissia is right here. Who is the Alissia in the house then?” I asked him, hoping he might have an answer I want to hear.
He was silent for a while before replying. “Uh… I don’t know Mrs Dion, we are working on getting her identity. We have spies planted about in the house, it wouldn’t take a lot of time before the truth is known. With that he disconnected the call.
My mind wasn’t at rest because of the news I just heard. If my suspicions were right, and Bryan and the Imposter were working together, then he was not only after the properties but also the safe— containing a great amount of treasures.
I unlocked my phone and dialed the lawyers number, remembring I had it. The safe was with me of course but when Bryan discovers that it isn’t hidden in any of the properties belonging to Alissia, there’s no telling what he can do especially since he would have so many resources to fund his quest.
The phone rang and the lawyer picked it up. I could hear his breathing through the phone and it seemed as though he just finished a hundred meter race.
He was panting and breathing hard but I was less concerned to worry about that.
“Now listen,” I began the moment the line connected. The person standing before you is not Alissia, it is a trap. I need you to meet me at my place before the next hour, there are some secrets you must know,” I spoke, a satisfied smile, settling on my face.
I didn’t hear his voice neither did I hear his hard breathing any longer. The next moment, he had cut the call and i knew, I was close to winning.
“You should take your leave now O’Neal. I can’t trust my daughter in the hand of a stranger and besides, I’ll be leaving my bodyguard here. He would be more than happy to take you out forcefully if you refuse to do so willingly,” i stated, ending with a wink.
He opened his mouth, to say something but stopped. “Suit yourself he whispered, walking out of the room.
“Make sure no one, except the doctor or the nurses on duty enter this room or come in contact with her, okay?” I instructed my agent before walking out to meet the lawyer at my house.
I had purposely called him a guard when O’Neal was present. It was best to do away with anything that would arouse suspicion.
I moved out of the hospital into my car. Starting the engine, I drove into the road. I had been so preoccupied with getting home to meet the lawyer that I didn’t notice what was happening.
Only when I heard a loud thud did I slam my foot into the break and gasp in shock, “oh no! This can’t be happening.”
