Chapter 46

he had maintained a dissatisfied look, one which put my mind in a crumbled state.

Getting rid of him was all that mattered now. Else, he might be a problem later.

We came down from the car and two nurses came outside with a stretcher to carry Alissia's body into the hospital.

They knew we were coming so it didn’t take long before they moved her.

I proceeded to go into the hospital but stopped when I noticed O’Neal was following behind. His presence was no longer required and it was best to get rid of him now.

I stopped and began to speak, “Uhh… O’Neal, thank you so much for everything you have done for my daughter, I am beyond grateful,”

I dipped my hand into my bag and brought out a wad of cash. “This should get rid of him quickly,” I smiled as the thought crossed my mind.

“We would take it from here, you should get back to your family now,” I said, stretching the money towards him.

For a man with a wretched lifestyle, living in such a shabby house, a huge sum of money like this should definitely make him blow over the moon but to my surprise, a frown settled on his face, making my heart race in anxiety.

I was certain he would collect the money with trembling hands and a mouth running with praises, why then the sudden expression?

“I did what I did because she needed my help,” he began. “Keep your money. I’ll be right here till she wakes up— nothing, not even money will fill me with more joy.”

I became furious and almost screamed at him. Why was he being so stubborn?

“O’Neal…” I began to speak but he interrupted.

“It’s fine, my son is old enough to take care of himself and his grandmother. Besides, there isn’t really much to do back home. I’m more than content to watch her till she wakes up,” he declared without batting an eyelid.

Frustrated, I sent a quick glance at him, one filled with hatred. He might have noticed it but it never showed on his face. Rather he tormented my soul with a smile— a suspicious one.

“Welcome Ms Dion, we have been expecting you,” a young doctor spoke the moment we walked into the hospital building.

“Take me to her ward,” I ordered.

“Right this way ma’am,” he replied, leading the way as we followed behind.

Getting into the ward, we saw her, already lying still on the bed as the nurses around plugged her into the vitals reading machine and installed an oxygen mask to steady her breathing.

The doctor went towards her and felt her pulse after which he studied the details on the machine for a while before turning back to address us.

“She’s still in coma— obviously. When or if she would wake up, I don’t know but the chances are high, good thing you brought her here on time. If she had stayed a day or two without proper medical care, that would have been her end,” he announced.

“Hmmm,” I sighed as his words drifted into my ears and settled in my soul. “How long doctor? For how long should we wait?” I demanded with a straight face.

It wasn’t like it mattered to me, if she was alive or in coma, what mattered is she being dead so that I can achieve everything I have planned out.

“A month, two, six, or maybe a year,” the doctor replied, not certain of the time. “If she’s lucky, she should be up in three months time.”

“O’Neal, I’m sure you heard the doctor, you would want to wait till god knows when, do you?” I asked him, irritated by his presence.

The more he lingered, the more I desired to get rid of him.

“I’ll leave when I wish to leave madam,” he answered with the same smile he had on his face earlier.

“Suit yourself, I have some business to take care of,” I scoffed, about to walk out of the room when he suddenly called to me.

“What sort of a mother are you?” He demanded, making me stop on my tracks.

“I beg your pardon,” I frowned, annoyed by his statement.

“You heard me right,” he began, “what sort of a mother are you?”

I stood dazed as I didn’t understand what he meant. This man was getting on my nerves.

“I’ve seen mothers give their life for their children and starve when their children are in vulnerable positions, but you are not like any of them. Your daughter is in coma and no one is certain she’ll get back up, not even the doctor. Yet all you care about is your business, what mother does that?” He asked again.

Up till now, I had endured his words and his actions.

I wanted to speak— to lash at him and tell him to mind his business but no words came out of my mouth as I opened it so I stopped. He could rant on for all I cared, I would deal with him later.

“Selfish beings,” I heard him whisper and I lost my temper.

“You are sick in the head!” I yelled at him. “How dare you teach me how to take care of my family.

He wasn’t surprised with my outburst and made to speak back when the doctors voice pierced through.

“Would the both of you just shut up! The girl is in coma for crying out loud, how would fighting help bring her back to life?”

I wanted to speak— to blame it all on O’Neal but stopped when I noticed something strange happening to Alissia. Her face became moist as water ticked down it.
