Chapter 38 Sofia's Madness in the Face of Danger
Elena Garcia POV:
'Damn it, these guys are really after Marco! We shouldn't have come back to the villa!' I cursed silently.
My whole body ached, and I could barely speak.
Sofia looked completely terrified. She was trembling, and when I got close to her, she shrank back and hid behind me.
I lowered my head, pretending to be scared too.
I had been in similar situations before, and when these gangsters didn't get answers, we were likely to face another beating.
My phone was confiscated, but luckily it had a password lock. They just glanced at it and tossed it on the table.
On the table, Sofia's phone was there too.
I had to find a way to contact the outside world. If I couldn't...
I bit my lip and turned to hug Sofia. I gently patted her back, trying to comfort her.
Then I could only hope Marco, maybe after receiving that inquiry text, would realize something.
But I knew that might be unrealistic.
Not getting answers from Sofia and me, a man kicked at us.
I blocked it with my back, coughing violently, feeling like my ribs were about to break.
Sofia continued to scream, and her screams made the men even more impatient. "Shut up, you damn bitch!"
"Sofia, I'm here!" I held Sofia tightly, trying to calm her down so her screams wouldn't continue and anger these thugs.
"We were just invited here! Please let us go, we have nothing to do with the person you're looking for!" I begged with tears.
I couldn't reveal that I knew Marco, nor could I reveal our relationship with Albert.
It wasn't that I was worried about the two of them, but I didn't trust the gangsters.
If these guys knew Albert and Marco were together, they would naturally think the Garcia family was involved with Marco.
Sofia and I could be harmed because of this, whether we cooperated or not.
The mafia wasn't a group of gentlemen who followed rules; only interests could make them temporarily compromise.
For the safety of Sofia and me, I needed to describe us as having nothing to do with them, hoping to gain some leniency and be released.
"What? Then whose bitches are you?" the man in front me asked.
"We're just ordinary people who came with friends. Our friend was invited by Albert, so we came along," I made up a clumsy excuse. "We're here because we left something here."
The men exchanged glances upon hearing this. They obviously knew Albert and had heard of his scandals.
Bringing a few girls to a beach vacation was normal for Albert.
"Damn Albert, why did you leave? Where did the others go?" the man cursed.
"I don't know. Albert suddenly dismissed us in the evening, just saying the party was over. We actually thought he was still at the villa, so we came back." I fabricated evidence that we knew nothing about the situation.
The men whispered among themselves.
They also agreed that if we were close to Marco and Albert, we wouldn't have the guts to show up here.
But they couldn't make a final judgment and decision, so they all looked at the man sitting on the sofa.
"What do we do? Let these two bitches go? Marco really doesn't seem to be here. We might have the wrong place."
"Maybe they are lying," The man sitting there sneered. He was thin, with a scar over one eye, as if it had been slashed by something sharp.
The scar made him look very intimidating.
"Why couldn't it be that Marco knew we were coming and had Albert's two bitches set a trap to lower our guard?" this man smiled.
His laugh was bone-chilling. I was pretty sure he was the one Marco had mentioned, his brother, Abner.
The way he looked at me made my skin crawl. He unsettled me more than any gangster I had ever seen, like a venomous snake ready to strike.
"But it doesn't matter whether this is a trap or not. Don't try any tricks, bitches. The moment you returned to this villa, your fate was sealed. Whether you have anything to do with Marco or not won't change your outcome."
My heart nearly stopped.
The situation was worse than I had imagined. Abner wasn't like Marco, who had a gentle side. He wasn't like the street thugs I'd encountered before. He was ruthless and had no qualms about harming ordinary people.
He was pure evil.
He came to take Marco's life and would kill anyone associated with Marco and anyone who witnessed it, including Sofia and me.
My lies couldn't buy us a chance to live.
In the end, Abner had his men lock Sofia and me in the basement.
I couldn't know their next move. Our lives were in their hands.
We were isolated and helpless.
Maybe because we appeared weak, these guys didn't think we had any chance of escaping. I wasn't tied up, which allowed me to help untie Sofia.
After untying her, I hugged Sofia again. Sofia had always lived in the Garcia Mansion. Even though she was an adopted child, from her earlier reaction, I could tell she had never experienced such a dire situation.
When Sofia calmed down a bit, I was about to comfort her again. I knew it was useless, but when you had no options and didn't want your family to despair with you, comforting was a necessary means.
Before I could speak, Sofia pushed me away hard.
Her beautiful blonde hair was now a mess, and her face was streaked with tears. Her once gentle and kind blue eyes were now filled with hatred as she looked at me.
"Elena, you knew everything, didn't you? Damn it! Why didn't you stop me! You liar, you tricked me!" Sofia cursed.
Sofia lost her mind. The first thing she did after regaining her senses was to question and scold me.
"Damn it! You brought me back here, put me in danger, you did it on purpose!" Sofia gritted her teeth, shouting.
I fell to the ground. I felt my heart colder than the basement floor.
"I'm so sorry, Sofia, but I did warn you. This is all an accident!" I explained.
"That was deceit!" Sofia retorted.
Sofia's eyes were full of hatred as she looked at me. I couldn't refute her words.
Even though I initially lied with good intentions, those lies had caused irreparable consequences.
Sofia naturally had the right to hate me, but I couldn't help but feel some anger rising within me.
I couldn't vent this anger on Sofia because I had deceived her, so I could only suppress it and direct it at the person who caused all this.
"Sofia, I'm really sorry. But listen, we should avoid arguing now and think if there's any way to get out of here." I persuaded.
"Do you have any good ideas?" Sofia became extremely sarcastic.
She looked at me mockingly, "In such a dangerous situation where we could die at any moment? What you should be doing now is praying to God. If God is merciful enough, maybe one of those guys will want to fuck you and give you a chance to live!"
I looked at Sofia, almost unable to believe those words came from her mouth.
I had never seen this side of Sofia!
