Chapter 58 The Wood Sisters

Elena Garcia POV:

So, the med school had its own campus, and even though it was just a fifteen-minute walk, it still felt like a trek for William and me.

William kept telling me we could see each other every day.

He was cool with spending fifteen minutes each day to come see me. He said those fifteen minutes gave him time to get ready and not worry about me catching him looking rough.

I laughed at that. I told him I loved him no matter what, and he always looked perfect to me.

William smiled but still said no. I figured it was a pride thing; people always acted a bit more careful around someone they liked.

Boston University had all kinds of dorms—traditional ones, apartment-style ones, and even some fancy ones.

I didn't overthink it and went for a traditional double room.

Sure, a single room might've been better, but I was hoping for a good roommate. I guess I was just scared of being lonely.

After I got my stuff sorted in the dorm, I met my roommate. Her name was Nancy Wood.

Nancy was super quiet and didn't seem great at socializing. When I said hi and introduced myself, she kept her head down, clutching her book like it was a lifeline.

Then she looked up, saw me looking at her, and immediately looked down again.

I figured she was just shy. When I asked her to grab lunch at the cafeteria, she didn't say no.

On the way, I tried to make small talk. "Nancy Wood. I met someone with the last name Wood at a party my family had. Her name sounds like my sister's, but I don't think you know her."

Seeing Nancy's face, I thought maybe my small talk skills weren't great either.

But she got what I was trying to do and asked, "What's your sister's name?"

"Sofia, Sofia Garcia. The girl I met was Sophia Wood," I said.

"My sister's name is also Sophia," Nancy said softly.

We were both surprised. After some chatting, I realized the girl I met at the party was indeed her sister, Sophia.

I hadn't really kept in touch with Sophia after that; we didn't exchange numbers or anything. But mentioning her to Nancy seemed to make her less nervous around me.

She didn't look down as much and could actually make eye contact.

Nancy told me Sophia was also in the med program.

"Sophia started with another major but switched to medicine in her second year," Nancy mumbled sheepishly.

Nancy got more animated talking about Sophia. She told me she was torn between BU and another school but chose BU because of Sophia.

I could tell she really looked up to Sophia.

"But I didn't tell Sophia I was coming here. I lied and said I was going to another school because I wanted to surprise her," Nancy explained.

"Then Sophia will definitely be surprised. She'll be so happy to see you," I agreed.

I was glad our conversation was going well.

Nancy was really smart. Her parents had hired tutors for her and Sophia, teaching them some college stuff ahead of time.

Nancy added, "My parents also set up internships for us at some hospitals during the holidays."

Unlike my interest in medicine, which was sparked by Rosa, Nancy had been into it since she was a kid.

I asked her when she planned to find Sophia. If she wanted to surprise her, the start of the school year might be the best time, considering we'd get swamped with classes and assignments later.

"I don't know. Actually, I've already messaged Sophia, but she hasn't replied yet." Nancy looked puzzled. "I think she's still busy. She got back to campus three days ago."

While waiting for Sophia's reply, we had lunch together and toured the campus.

After getting familiar with the campus and heading back to the dorm, Nancy got an email from Sophia.

The email wasn't what Nancy expected, and her face fell.

She lowered her head again, and I heard her sobbing softly.

"What happened?" I asked, worried.

"I don't know why, but Sophia suddenly got really angry," Nancy looked bewildered and helpless. "I thought she'd be happy, but she told me to leave. She said she'd ask our parents to arrange for me to transfer immediately."

Her tears kept falling, soaking her skirt.

It was a confusing and heartbreaking situation.

"Nancy, calm down. Wipe your tears, okay?" I comforted her.

I hugged her and patted her back, saying, "Maybe there's some misunderstanding. You and Sophia have a good relationship, right?"

"Is she mad because I lied to her?" Nancy whimpered.

"No, you just wanted to surprise her. I don't think Sophia would be angry about that; she loves you very much," I said soothingly.

I told Nancy that maybe she should talk to Sophia face-to-face.

Nancy agreed, but Sophia hung up on her.

Seeing Nancy's tears fall again, I felt worried.

She cried so long that her eyelids became swollen, which was a sign of an allergic reaction.

Nancy told me she had medication and that I shouldn't worry. Then she said she wanted to be alone for a while.

I considerately told her that I happened to need to go to the grocery store.

It was true; I did need to buy some things, but they weren't urgently needed.

In my original plan, I could have bought them in the following days.

On my way back from the grocery store, carrying a large bag of items I needed, I decided to cut through a building to get back to the dorm faster.

It was an academic building with a long hallway in the middle. Cutting through it would save me a lot of time.

I thought Nancy might have calmed down by now or maybe even reached Sophia. If it was the latter, I hoped they could have a good talk.

Sophia didn't seem like the type to speak cruelly to Nancy. If she were a mean sister, Nancy wouldn't care so much about her.

As I walked and thought, I accidentally took a wrong turn.

When I realized it, I immediately turned around to head in the right direction.

But as I passed a window, I heard a commotion from outside, in a place overgrown with weeds where no one would usually linger.

A voice came to me. "Take off your clothes! Take them all off, you filthy slut! Who told you to show up at school again? After offending Laura, do you think you could just come back and be fine? Is anyone ready to record this? Damn, look at her clothes straining against her chest. Her boobs might be huge! We should film this and share it with guys who'd love it!"
