Chapter Twenty-Seven
It had been a few hours now and Laura had been unable to get ahold of Matthew. She checked with Chris again and he hadn’t been able to get ahold of him either. They were getting worried for their friend, so they decided they would head over to his apartment to see if maybe he had just turned off his phone and fallen asleep. As soon as Laura and Chris arrived at Matthews apartment they knew something was wrong, they knocked on his door and no one answered. When they tried the door they found it unlocked which was something Matt never forgot to do before leaving. Chris drew his gun before entering and had Laura get behind him, he pushed the door open and called out for Matthew but there was no answer. He went in and Laura followed behind hind they called out again still no answer, it was clear he wasn’t there. Chris went to check the other rooms while she started in the kitchen and living room. Chris had just finished checking the bed and the bathroom when Laura called for him back in the living room, she was holding a smashed phone in her hand. It didn’t take a genius figure out it was Matt’s phone. They took it with them and rushed back to the office to pull his phone records, if what they feared was true Matthew had gone to confront William on his own or he was taken.
William came back into the other room, the detective was still bound and gagged. He set his bag down went over to Matthew and ripped the duck tape off, as he did the detective shouted at him. “You sick fucking bastard! Where’s Sam!?” William on laughed at the detective and sat down on the cot in front of him, “So angry detective, she’s fine she’s just in another room so we can talk. I apologize for losing my temper earlier, but you must admit… on all accounts I truly believed you were the one who killed my brother.” He looked at Matthew and the truth of what William was saying unnerved him slightly. William took a breath before continuing, “Unfortunately, that’s not good news for you. You see, I’ve done thorough research on your team and Detective Nolan doesn’t really have anyone in his life. Except…. For you and Sam … your like family to him…” It didn’t take Matt long to figure out where his line thought was going, William was going to kill them both. He’d kill Sam first and then he’d kill Matthew, and he’d force the team to watch unable to do anything. It was too late for second thoughts and Matt wished he’d done something to alert the team, as it was Sam had been under their noses this whole time, but would they know where to look?
“I’m sure Nick has told you I’m very find of sharing my plans… I think it’s only fair to share with you now that you’re part of the story.” William had what could only be described as a purely evil look in his eyes as he spoke with the detective. “As you’ve probably guessed Sam is still going first… I want to savor the look on your face as she dies…. The question is though… how to end you?” Matthew hated being helpless, it bothered him more than he liked, and no matter what he did his hands remained bound. He knew he had to try and buy some time, time to try and get free.
“I don’t get it William… what exactly to do you think this will accomplish? Aside from literally signing your death warrant…” The detective was feeling brave regardless of his broken or cracked ribs, he’d do whatever it took. “Killing Sam… killing me, your just going to piss a lot of people off. Do you really think this won’t end with all of us dead?” William was truly enjoying the conversation unfolding and couldn’t help but feel compelled to share what he so desperately wanted to say.
“Revenge is always sweetest when there is something at risk detective… and even if I die in the process… I will rest well knowing I avenged my brother. Can you say the same?” Matt had to admit that he couldn’t if ghosts were indeed real the moment he died he’d be stuck on earth forever with unfinished business. He didn’t want to die….but more than that he didn’t want his daughter to die, it wasn’t fair. But then again no one ever said that life was supposed to be fair, after all he’d lost his wife on 9/11 and all he was able to say goodbye to was an empty box. William continued on he told the detective about all the fun things he’d done with Sam…everything except the sexual assault. He wanted to save that for last, he wanted it to be the detectives last thought before he died.
