Chapter Twenty-Eight
Laura and Chris had made it back to the lab in record time, they gave everyone a quick rundown of what they found and what they thought. Chris had Alex pull up Matthews call log, his last call had been a few hours ago and had lasted about 10 minutes. Immediately after that the phone had been turned off, all they had to go on was the number. They tried to trace it but it came back as prepaid no name just where it was bought and paid for with cash. When they reviewed the security camera footage it just showed a nondescript male wearing a hat and sunglasses. It could have been anyone even William for all they knew, they could call the number but they needed time to formulate a plan. The other thing they’d noticed that was Matthew had left his car behind, but he could’ve walked or taken a taxi for all they knew. He could have just been upset about his daughter and had an angry moment, it had been rough for all of them these past few days. He could have just needed some time alone…but that didn’t seem to sit right with them even now. Chris had gone back to canvas the area, see if anyone had seen Matthew or where he might have gone. No one had seen anything or at least nothing they were going to share, he decided to go back to Matt’s apartment see if there was anything he had missed. He wasn’t there more than 10 minutes when he got an unexpected call, from an unexpected person.
William had slowly been breaking the detective down when he noticed movement in his apartment across the street. He got up to take a look and Matthews eye’s followed him. Looking across the way he saw detective Nolan in the looking around and couldn’t help but comment out loud. “Looks like they’re looking for you… but they won’t find you.” He saw the realization on the detectives face, and how he realized just how close William had been this whole time. It also explained how William would know whether or not Matt had followed his instructions. “Why so surprised detective, I’ve know about this little view from a while, found it the first time I broke into Samantha’s apartment.” Matthew wanted to be shocked but knew that the only way William could have planned this so we’ll was by breaking into her apartment and scoping them out for months as Nick had told them. William could see the “wheels turning” in the detectives head and spoke up, “Not as surprised as I had anticipated but I suppose Nick already told you I’d been watching. Shame really… but I have an idea on how to make this fun again.” He watched as the detective got a confused look on his face, William went over to the small table ripped off a large piece of tape from the roll and walked towards Matt. Matt tried to move away but had no where to go as William gagged him again and then pulled out a phone.
Chris answered the phone, “Detective Nolan, how can I…”, he didn’t even finish the sentence as he heard the voice on the other end of the line. He knew who it was without having to ask.
“Hello Detective… I assume I need no introduction by the way you stopped talking..” William was amused, he was right this was already fun again, and for him it was about to get even better. “If you’re looking for Detective Riley, he’s a little busy at the moment…” He laughed and watched the utter look of horror cross the detectives face from where he was standing.
“How could you possibly know that?” Chris was scared and he was a veteran detective it took a lot to scare him. He had a dreaded feeling deep in the pit of his stomach that he was being watched, but he didn’t know from where or how.
“Let’s just say I have my ways… and you friend was dumb enough not to figure it out…” He looked at Detective Riley when he said that and the look of anger on the detectives face said it all. He knew the detective would have cried out of he could have, but it wouldn’t have amounted to much more than a muffled yell. “Think you’ll be any smarter?” William laughed and waited for the detective to answer.
“I’m listening William… what do you want?” Chris surprisingly held back his anger and remained calm.
“I’m told you’re the one that killed my brother and not detective Riley… is this correct?” William too kept his anger in check, shame really that you can’t kill someone through a phone.
“Its true, I shot your brother and I’d do it again in a heartbeat.” Chris knew it wasn’t wise to provoke a madman, but he wasn’t in the mood for games. He needed to buy as much time as possible to be able to find his friends. He had the lab install an app on his phone on the off chance William decided to call him. Chris didn’t believe it would happen but now he was glad, the longer the call lasted the better the chance he had of finding his friends.
“I’m going to ignore that last part detective… because trust me when I say I wish I could kill the Riley’s repeatedly. What would you do… to get them back that is?” William didn’t really care, he was going to kill them either way but this was fun for him. Chris had no intention of playing Williams sick game, about the time he was going to answer his phone pinged letting him know they had a location. What came next angered William and he had no choice but to hang up.
“We got you, you soon of bitch! Make no mistake I’m coming for you and if you do anything to either of them your dead!” Chris all but shouted this at William before the line went dead and he called the lab.
