Chapter 91: I Will Protect Your Daughter
Chapter 91: I Will Protect Your Daughter
Luciano
I was sitting in my office at the mansion when I heard a knock on my door. I uttered come in and the person opened the door, it was one of my guards. He bowed his head before speaking.
“Sorry to disturb you, Don. There is a man who is here to see you, one Gabriel Laurent.” he said. Abigail's father.
“Let him in.” I said and he nodded his head before leaving the room.
I averted my gaze back to the cigarette in my hand, it was a bad habit that Abigail dislikes when I do it inside. She said it is unhygienic and unhealthy.
“Luciano, is this a bad time?” I heard a familiar voice say from the doorway, he glanced around my office and I shook my head.
“Not at all, come in.”
The suited man walks in and takes a seat opposite me. It has been a while since I had seen him last, the last time was when they invited me to dinner after receiving the news about me and Abigail.
“What is on your mind, Mr. Laurent?” I asked politely, he was after all my girlfriend's father. He chuckled and waved his hand dismissively.
“No need for such formalities now that you are dating my daughter.” He chuckles.
Gabriel and I have known each other for around a year now as a result of our companies partnering together from time to time. And it has been seven months since I first met Abigail. Time really runs by.
“Very well, what did you want to discuss?” I asked, taking another drag off the cigarettes, he shifted in his seat, making me wonder if this is more important than I had guessed.
“Well,” he began.
“I have had some minor issues lately and I didn't know anyone better to go to. I know you are a powerful man, maybe even more than you let on and wanted your advice.” His tone had changed into a more serious one, yet they spill from his mouth rather carefully
There is a look in his eyes that I cannot with certainty decipher, perhaps trepidation and unease.
“Whatever it is you want my help with, I think I will need a more complex description.” I said, he lets out an anxious exhale before leaning forward in his seat.
“I owe some people a big sum of money which I don't have and these people…” he drifts off.
“Look, Luciano, I had heard some rumors about you and I think you are the only one who can help me.” He said slowly as if people are eavesdropping outside the door.
My guards know better than to do that. I exhaled and planted both my elbows on the desk before putting out the cigarettes in the ashtray. My fingers intertwined in front of me and I met his gaze.
“What exactly are you implying, Gabriel?” I asked, trying not to come off as rude.
He shouldn't know about my position and if he did, wouldn't he have an issue that I am dating his daughter?
“It is nothing but rumors, of course. No one really knows which is why I haven't said anything.” He said, avoiding answering my question.
“Tell me what the rumors are.” he hesitated.
“That you are some sort of mafia Don.”
I always knew that these sorts of rumors were spreading for some unknown reason, perhaps I just have that look, I don't know. Coming here and speaking to me about this proves that he doesn't really believe it. For him, this must have been a long shot. If he would have dared to face me and ask like this.
“Is it true?” He asked, drowning, leaning back in my chair and cock a brow. His mouth opens but closes just as fast.
“Does Abigail know?” I nodded.
“Yes, since a while back.” His eyes drifted away from mine and he looked like he was having an internal battle with himself.
“Is it a problem for you, Gabriel?” He looks back at me
“Actually no, in fact, if anything this might be safer for Abigail. Having this kind of security is a sort of relief, as long as she isn't dragged into it too deep. I can't survive losing my little girl.” He said firmly.
“I will protect her with not only my own life but my men.” I assured him truthfully, he nodded and let out a sigh of relief.
“Now I need you to tell me about this deal you have with The Black Lotus Mafia.” My serious tone was back and he frowned in confusion.
“How did you know?” He asked slowly and I chuckled.
“I am the Don, I know everything and I even know that your little deal has put Abigail in danger. They are after her and I need you to tell me what the hell happened.”
He shifted under my intense gaze and even though I wanted this conversation to go smoothly, I can't help but feel protective over Abigail even if it is her own father. When he starts the whole story from the beginning to end, I lean forward to catch up with every single word.
“They reached out to me sometime around three months ago, I was at the time on a business trip in Dubai. The week before my wife had been cornered while shopping on the way from work. Luckily some police nearby heard her scream otherwise I have no idea what those men would do.”
He looked down and I can imagine the whole thing being replayed in his head. The worry, the fear and then he continued.
“They said they could protect my family in exchange for money, I hesitated but they pushed me and convinced me that it was the only way to ensure my family's safety.” He gave me an empty look, a hint of guilt behind his eyes.
Extortion, they forced people to give up money by threatening them and in this case, saying they will protect them in exchange. My father did that a lot, it was a way to get an extra good income. You can't even reject the offer because then the mafia group will attack you instead.
“How much money are we talking about?” I asked, his jaw clenched while he hesitated for a second.
“Five million.” He uttered.
The numbers take me aback, it was a lot of money and I didn't expect The Black Lotus Mafia to carve such large sums. And even though Gabriel is the CEO, his company has gone downhill the last month. He must be losing more money than he makes.
“Gabriel, there is no way that they will leave you alone unless you pay them and judging by their recent actions, it was only a matter of time until they strike. I will do what I can to help you because I love your daughter.” I said, standing up and adjusting my tie.
“However, I need you to know that this isn't my daily job, I only look after my family, your daughter just happens to be a part of it.” I continued, he stood up as well and lifts his hand which I grabbed and shake
“Thank you so much, I am so grateful.” I nodded and let go of his hand to allow him to exit my office.
A wave of relief washes through me when I sit down in the chair. Finally, the endless question marks about this fucking situation are sorted out.
