Chapter 128: Plea

I stood looking out at the stars in the night sky from the roof of the Ardor bar building. The power from the crystals thrummed beneath my skin as I swirled it inside me, converting it to my pink energy. I needed to do this. I had to go all out like I had done for the brothers in order to save Kezia. It wasn't fair that she was taken hostage because of me.
I closed my eyes. I searched deep inside the well of power within me and whispered, "Remi." The word escaped my lips with a deep insistence with power behind it.
The night pressed in thick around me like a cloud that descended and hung about in a fog. I realized it was Remi's shadow fighting his summoning.
"Remi," I bit out. The power behind the word was sharp.
The shadows merged into his figure. He stumbled forward on to his hands and knees before me.
"Kira," he heaved a breath. "Where did you learn that trick?"
"I need you to take me to Kezia."
He lifted his head. "Don't do that. Forget about Kezia. She's lost. Just let it be, trust me."
"I can't. I can't let her be used in my place. It's not fair."
Remi climbed to his feet. "Life's not fair. Get used to it. Forget about her."
I stared hard at him. "I will not. What is Mila planning? I'd have a better chance of getting out alive if I know what this is all about."
A word tried to escape Remi's lips, but his mouth clamped shut. I could feel a strong magic at work, but I didn't know why. Maybe it was because I summoned him, maybe it was because I was filled to the brim with power. I cut the strand that held his words back.
"Tell me." The order was filled with power.
"The darkness is doing a ritual to bring her body back from the dead. She needs souls and someone related to her by blood to execute the ritual successfully." Remi stopped and blinked. "Wait, how was I able to tell you that?"
"Someone related to her by blood. Both Kezia and I are. So why would she want me? Why even hold Kezia hostage?"
Remi didn't even hesitate in his answer. I could tell he wanted to, but his lips were compelled to move. "Because she wants your power. If she does the ritual with you, she can siphon your power at the same time."
I nodded.
"How close is she to completing it?"
"She's preparing for it right now. When the moon reaches the zenith over the ritual site, it will be time."
"In Utah?"
Remi nodded.
"Take me."
He hesitated.
Before I could force power into my words, he took a step forward.
"Please, Kira, listen to me."
"My name's not Kira."
"Well, it's not Lanie either, but you can't do this. Trust me. She's too strong. She just wants you there for your power. You're walking right into her trap."
"What am I supposed to do then? Just let her kill Kezia while I sit on my thumbs and do nothing?"
He closed the distance between us. I could smell his familiar campfire scent. He set his hands on my shoulders. "Yes. That is what you need to do. It sucks, but that is what you have to do."
"I won't."
"You have to."
I squeezed my eyes shut. "I would rather die than let someone else take my place."
"If she gets your power, then she will kill a lot more people."
"Sacrifice one to save the many. That is such a narrow-minded view of the world. There is always a better answer."
He shook me a little. "Please don't do this."
I looked into his hazel eyes. I couldn't stand his begging. He didn't even see me for who I really was. He was stuck on Kira, not the new me. I summoned a well of power and pushed it into my words. "Take me now."
The cold descended along with the shadows. I felt weightless and ice-cold for a moment before the ground touched my feet. We materialized outside of Lanie's old house in the backyard. A rush of memories flooded my mind as I looked around at the overgrown lawn. I remembered doing tai chi here. I remembered learning small bits of magic that Isabell would allow me to do. At the same time, a longing filled my stomach. It was all the things Kira wanted from her mother.
Now I looked at it. A merge of the two memories should have felt confusing. Instead, I felt empty. I felt like it was someone else moving through the memories. I was someone new. I got to choose who I was going to be. I looked out towards the forest where the nexus was. I got to choose to do the right thing.
"Please don't. You're putting a lot more people than just yourself at risk," Remi said.
I pushed his arms off of me. "This is my decision. You can either fight alongside me and help me take her down or leave."
He crossed his arms as he took a step back. His shadow fell apart before me as he ran away.
I lifted my chin. "Fine. I don't need your help anyway. I don't need anyone's help."
I turned towards the dark forest and starting marching toward the ritual.
"I don't need Remi. I don't need Liam. I don't need Angie. I definitely don't need Anton." I ticked the names off of my fingers as I walked. "I don't need anybody. I have so much power inside me; I can blow this whole place apart. We will just see what Mila has up against this. She has no chance, that's what. Nothing."
I started pulling the pink power up out of the deep wells of magic inside me. I let it coat my skin and ooze out my pores. The magical pink wings formed from my back then fluttered. My feet left the ground as I glided forward. I was ready. I was going to take out Mila and the darkness for good.
