Chapter 29: Adam Robinson

Ursula sprinted to her modest apartment, her nerves on edge, knowing that if Matthew discovered her caller's identity, it could spell trouble.

She had learned to be cautious during her years with Matthew, using codes like the one on her phone, a number that meant more to her than Matthew ever could.

Pacing her living room, she dialed the number, whispering urgent pleas for an answer. The late call was out of the ordinary; she was usually the one calling back. Something serious must have happened.

Her grandma's voice, fraught with worry, confirmed her fears, Adam, her son, had a high fever, and the rural medical facilities were inadequate.

Ursula's heart lurched. She assured her grandma she'd be there right away to take Adam to the hospital, despite the older woman's worries about her rushing.

After she hung up, Ursula grabbed her essentials and, bypassing the bus station, hailed a taxi to the countryside. The hour-long drive from Zephyr City was as blur as her thoughts drifted back to a fateful night three years ago.

That night marked the start of her secret affair with Matthew, a cautious admiration that quickly turned into an intense relationship. When she found out she was pregnant, fear and excitement battled within her. She chose to keep the child, even if it meant hiding it from Matthew and facing it alone.

She fabricated an excuse to care for her ill grandmother and left, her pregnancy undetected. But as her belly grew and the challenges of pregnancy took their toll, Ursula faced it all without Matthew, her tears often soothed only by the baby's kicks.

The premature birth and the baby's heart condition brought new struggles, including costly surgeries. Ursula had managed to keep it all from Matthew, but now Adam needs an urgent, expensive surgery.

Dylan's return and the money he brought were instrumental. As Adam's father, she felt entitled to the funds, despite the complications it brought.

Ursula's memories were interrupted by the taxi driver's voice, announcing their arrival. Lost in her thoughts, she hadn't noticed the tears streaming down her face. The driver, concerned, offered kind words but didn't pry into her reasons.

Regaining composure, Ursula assured the driver she'd return soon, offering extra payment to wait. With a heavy heart, she stepped out of the taxi, ready to face what awaited her back home.
