Chapter 57 Self-Deprecation
"What's your second condition?" Ursula asked, her eyes alight with a mix of hope and calculation. If the next demands were as simple as the first, she could be closer to the payout she needed.
Matthew's gaze was unreadable as he regarded her. "Are you that desperate of money?"
He knew about the regular transfers into her account and the credit card he'd given her, which she'd never used. She shouldn't be in need.
Feeling the weight of his scrutiny, Ursula scrambled for an excuse. "I want to buy a house for my grandma to live with me."
Matthew raised an eyebrow. "What kind of house costs five million?"
Ursula sighed, dropping the act. "Look, I've been with you for three years. I think I've earned a fair share, don't you?"
Matthew's response was cutting. "You really think you're worth that much?"
Ursula's pride stung, but she kept her composure. "Not everyone can claim they're worth five million, Matthew."
His face turned serious. "Be careful with your words, Ursula."
"Just give me the conditions, and I'll disappear," she said, trying to sound indifferent. "You and Dylan won't hear from me again."
"You don't deserve it," Matthew said coldly, standing abruptly and leaving.
Ursula watched him go, her facade crumbling as soon as he was gone. She mocked herself bitterly, tears slipping through her fingers.
She knew he must despise her now, but she couldn't help crying.
Alone, she stayed up until dawn, her thoughts a jumble. Then, with a practiced smile, she prepared for the day, covering her bruises with makeup and hiding her swollen forehead.
She was early to the shop, her mind still on Matthew. Shaking her head, she decided to get breakfast.
Then there was Jin Yan, the kind man she dreaded hurting again.
At lunch, Timothy interrupted her attempted apology. He understood her rejection and asked for a chance to grow closer.
Ursula felt a pang of guilt. Timothy had always known about her feelings for Matthew, yet here he was, offering her an out.
"Jin Yan, I'm sorry," she said. "I can't accept you now, but thank you."
Timothy admitted he'd hoped to win her over with time, but Ursula had to be honest. "Your pursuit might be in vain," she told him knowing she shouldn’t lead him on.
