Chapter 60: The Girl Goes Out to Play
"Cut the act, just tell me what happened." Katherine's tone was firm, but her heart softened.
Ursula had always been the quiet type, hardly ever shedding a tear, and Katherine, the tomboy, secretly envied her poise. But around Katherine, Ursula came alive, shedding the quietude like a second skin.
"Fine, fine," Ursula sighed, knowing Katherine's no-nonsense attitude, and she recounted the previous day's drama.
Katherine, thoughtfully touching her chin, mused, "That guy, Matthew, stepped in to help you?"
He was also a scrapper, who knew the man had it in him to throw down when needed.
"Yep." Ursula confirmed, then hesitated. "By the way, how did you know I was here?"
"I swung by the store for shopping, and I heard you were here, so I rushed over," Katherine said, her honesty clear.
"Adam's got enough clothes. Let's shop tomorrow. Got a spare room?" Ursula asked, planning some quality time with her son.
"Sure, I've got a chic two-bed apartment. Move in with me?" Katherine offered with a playful wink.
"A permanent move's out, but I'll visit. I need to find a school for the kid," Ursula replied, thinking of her little book lover.
"I'll handle it. He's my boy, after all," Katherine declared, patting her chest confidently.
"Then it's settled." Ursula agreed, dropping formalities.
Katherine smirked, noticing Ursula's unease. "Since when do you go for luxury hospital rooms?"
Silence. The room must've been Matthew’s good job.
Katherine's eyes danced with mischief. "Feeling better? Let's hit the town tonight."
Ursula was wary. "Where to?"
Childhood memories of Katherine's wild plans flooded back—each adventure more unforgettable than the last.
Katherine put on a wounded look. "You're breaking my heart with that suspicion."
Ursula raised an eyebrow, unimpressed. "After all these years, you think I'd fall for that?"
Katherine was hurt. "You're so cold. Join me at the bar tonight?"
"No," Ursula shot back firmly.
"Why not?"
"You know why." Ursula didn’t answer directly.
Katherine's eyes lit up. "Worried about your drinking? I've got your back."
Ursula blushed. "I'm not going, period."
She wasn't a lightweight, but one bad experience had taught her a lesson. She couldn't risk another blackout.
Katherine played the sympathy card. "You'd leave me to fend for myself? What if I overdo it?"
Ursula caved, "Okay, I'll go, but I'm not drinking."
"We'll just enjoy the vibe," Katherine promised. Ursula wasn't interested in her suitor, right?
Back home, Katherine had a bachelor brother to marry off, and their family had a plan: save one, save yourself from an arranged marriage.
Katherine's suggestion felt like a setup. Ursula had a weird feeling but agreed to talk to her friend first before committing to the night out.
"Inviting Dylan?" Katherine's tone was sharp.
"No. But why the dislike?" Ursula was puzzled.
Katherine frowned. "She's too much to take. Doesn't she make you uncomfortable?"
"Dylan's got a temper, but he's not bad." Ursula defended him.
"You'll see." Katherine said, certain Ursula would learn Dylan's true colors.
At the billing desk, they learned someone had covered the bills. They exchanged eye contact and they understood each other.
"It's a good thing, right?" Katherine eyed Ursula's conservative outfit. "Change at my place."
"I can change later," Ursula insisted. Her clothes were just a tad formal.
"Trust me, you'll thank me later." Katherine insisted, and Ursula reluctantly agreed.
