Chapter 7: Jealousy and Dissatisfaction

Dylan had inquired the day before and learned that Matthew had been single for years and hadn't dated anyone: "Ursula, you know, the school anniversary is coming up soon, and we all have to go back for it."

"You're right, Matthew hasn't had a girlfriend for years, he must still like me. I've decided to confess to him during the school anniversary. In front of all students and teachers, even if he tries to resist, he won't refuse me there," Dylan spoke with determination.

"Oh, is that so?" Ursula gripped her cutlery tightly forcing a smile, "I was still thinking about how to help you, and now you've got this plan. That's great, I support you."

Dylan faked a smile, "Of course, but I'll still need your help with something at that time."

Later, Dylan dragged Ursula to a jewelry store, stating she wanted to buy a pair of rings. When Dylan told the shop assistant the man's ring size, Ursula's smile stiffened and she felt the attack of sourness and discomfort inside.
Dylan picked out a pair of simple platinum rings and showed them to Ursula.

"Ursula, do you think these rings look good?"

Ursula nodded: "Yeah, they are beautiful."

"Hehe, I once gave one to Matthew, but I accidentally lost it while we were out having fun. I'm buying another one to make it up to him."

Ursula couldn't hear anything Dylan was saying anymore. All she could hear was a buzzing in her ears, making her feel awful.

She was jealous and unwilling to accept the situation.

But what could she do? Dylan and Matthew were the couple, while she was the one kept in the shadows. Matthew had never even mentioned her in front of any friends.

Ursula thought,if love lost it’s just lost, but she couldn't lose her friendship too. She and Dylan were like sisters, close enough to share everything but boyfriends, and she had, after all, stolen Matthew from Dylan.

After coming to terms with some things, Ursula grasped Dylan's hand tightly and said earnestly, "Whatever it takes, I'll help you and Matthew get back together, trust me."

"What are you doing, suddenly so sappy!" Dylan withdrew her hand, laughing and teasing, "I'll let you know, I'm not into women, and if you like me, that's your own tough luck, got it?"

Ursula laughed, "Who knows, maybe one day you'll fall for me?"

That night, Ursula stayed with Dylan in a hotel. They talked heart-to-heart, and Dylan shared amusing stories from Melbourne and even showed Ursula the scar on her stomach from a cesarean performed when she had her daughter.

"The doctor said my pelvis was too small, that makes it difficult to have a natural delivery, so I went with the doctor's advice and chose C-section. After I had my daughter, I thought I'd have a cute daughter for Matthew too, only one kid."

"Really?" Ursula looked at the ugly scar on Dylan's stomach and couldn't help asking, "And, how is James treating you? What did he say when you got back?"

"He likes me, but I made it clear I don't like him," said Dylan, she has never changed, "He wouldn't agree to a divorce, so I used our daughter to pressure him. Eventually, he signed the divorce papers without a fight."

Ursula didn't respond.

She suddenly felt sorry for that man named James, who married Dylan hoping to spend a lifetime together; his wife had another love. Perhaps his excuse about the daughter was really just not wanting Dylan to leave him.

"No, it's just that I easily get cold and you know it," Ursula said with a smile, covertly moving Dylan's hand away, "You might be able to stand this low temperature, but I can't."
