Chapter 17
There were two types of buildings that they were currently staring at. The first was entirely formed from the disaster-proof materials that Katherine had found.
They were working on it at the moment including one of her colleagues who had also started to install a disaster alarm that would be used directly by the house. It wasn't easy to find everything in a short amount of time but since they were used to being in a hurry and just in case something was needed so they certainly couldn't say no if one or two things were needed at a moment's notice.
"This alarm is still not perfect but hopefully it can bring benefits and be seen for its use and benefits whether it works properly or not at this point I am trying to develop all the monitors and usage again so that there are no mistakes. Don't let anything happen that makes the situation worse."
Katherine walked towards the house with several other professors. They were wearing protective gear: helmets, vests made of collapse material and protection for vulnerable bone parts.
They entered the house after all the systems and alarms were in place, with Katherine taking a tablet to readily note down what would be a defect in the building.
The automated system greeted them with an activated light that disappeared as soon as they entered the house. That allowed Katherine to discover a new sophistication that could be used as a complement to the house.
"It's a sign that the system is starting to recognize us and count how many of us enter the house. It can also be added later if this feature doesn't work. Then it can also be adjusted at will because of course there will be people visiting and the like so it won't be able to be clearly counted. The point is to focus on the fact that the owner of the house and all his family members must register themselves in the system so that if there is an earthquake or some other sudden disaster, the system will calculate how many people have left the house if it is not possible to stay inside." The professor who invented the device said making Katherine nod slowly and write it down again on the tablet.
They went back to looking around and Katherine herself touched a part of the wall. She looked seriously at her surroundings and noted anything that was missing starting from the gesture, the surface of the material produced and the percentage of all materials used. Everything needed careful consideration because they had to create a safety house that could be used by everyone including parents, children and others.
"This material is heat-resistant, we will try it tomorrow because what we need is direct sunlight, not until now the sample has never been found as hot as it usually is. So tomorrow just let the sun shine directly on it and after that we will see how strong this building will last and not porous." One of the other Professors said as he attached a device that could measure the depth of the wall.
"Right now the wall has a depth of 15 inches and if it decreases by just one percent tomorrow for one day then it's still not right for use because it will melt. If it melts then we have to optimize it again and make it better. Because this one won't be suitable for us to continue using if it's just going to melt and get thinner, while we need a branch that can be used for a long time before we find a better version.
"After the sun passes through tomorrow, or maybe we can do this research and test for 3 days in a row for the sun at the same time we will create other disasters such as earthquakes, strong movements from the bottom of the earth and the like. Tomorrow we will install some disaster manipulation systems as I said earlier so that we can do further testing."
Katherine and the others nodded, agreeing with everything the senior professor had said before they walked deeper inside and looked around again.
"Up to this deep, the air movement is quite good because there are also quite a lot of vents. We're not trapped and there's no shortage of air inside so that's not a problem either. Besides, if the air is not developing well we have found a device that can be used for this so there will be no significant problem. We'll check everything else and also the floor to see if it can withstand the heat from the ground where it became a building."
The research and testing they are doing right now is still doctored because the building is still being built. They could not directly hit it with something that would destroy this building before they even praised the answer too much. But they were also not going to waste time, if indeed this would not bring the benefits and quality that they were looking for then they would also have to find another way to be able to build this building.
"Shall I take you home?"
Katherine turned to find Elano already smiling at her. It was late and she was waiting for the public transportation to come but none had passed by. Somehow when they should have passed, she had intended to go home by herself so the car that brought them aka the Professors had gone home and left her.
"Tonight seems to be very cold, I don't know how many degrees. Even now it feels like it's piercing the bones, it's better to go home now than later."
Katherine sighed softly and then nodded. "There's no other choice, I also didn't bring the remote control of my flying car. So I can't summon it remotely, I will have to go home with you and inconvenience you, Mr. Benjamin."
Elano smiled. "No problem."
He had already bought his own flying car and it was quite easy with the wealth he had. That's why now he seemed to be casually inviting Katherine to get into the same car as him. Several times Katherine had also helped and even invited him to get into the flying car from here so she also wouldn't mind helping if there was a need.
Along the way Katherine only looked outward and seemed unconcerned about the presence of the man beside her. Elano could see a huge change and it made him feel a bit awkward. After all, this girl had not responded to him from the start. Katherine was a very relaxed girl and didn't want to involve him in anything at all.
"Do you want to get some food or something first? I'm a little hungry."
Katherine only glanced at Elano when he spoke up. "Umm, no. Didn't you just eat earlier? I'm still a bit full. I still have to go home and do a lot of other work. I have to go to the office early tomorrow morning, there's not much time. Besides, if I take too long to get home, my mom will be worried."
Katherine was being evasive and he knew it, so at the moment Elano just smiled and continued his driving and controlling his flying car. Elano would not force her if she did not want to. It would only complicate matters further and would not make their relationship better when it was currently in a bad state.
"You know that I really sincerely want to be friends with you? But since you've been avoiding me and not wanting to have much to do with me, I'm a little sad. It feels like someone who is being ignored by her old friends and good friends. But I realize I can't force you into something you don't like."
Katherine sighed softly. "I just don't want to make a lot of small talk or anything like that because it would just be a waste of my time. You know that in the world of research and science, everyone can be an enemy and everyone can be a friend. We've already missed and I don't want that to happen again while we're desperately trying to create a formula.
"Maybe I was wrong in responding to you but let my heart believe in itself and I don't like to be forced because if it's forced it shows that everything still makes sense and it will still happen like what you think. Just leave everything as it is now and if I can see your sincerity later I will believe and won't stay away from you too much," she said without much ado making Elano smile and nod.
"I will wait until you believe and see what you are with a good man. By the way, is that why you never had any friends?"
Katherine nodded. "There is no time for us to make friends and play because everyone is busy dealing with this problem. I also can't just play and do whatever I want especially since I have an important position and I have to do it well. Our lives are abnormal, everything is happening because of disasters and the earth's climate change which has a huge effect," she said making Elano sigh.
He did not find anyone wandering around like the people in his town. Everyone including the girls, kids and all were very busy and preferred to spend time at home. Even everyone seemed to be working from inside the house so he rarely met new people.
Shopkeepers who would immediately serve people when they came in were all the same, and she couldn't even say hello to one of her next-door neighbors because he rarely showed his face.
"Our lives are not easy and it's a very serious thing. We can't just do whatever we want, that's why I can say you'll never be comfortable living here because it's not a pleasant place at all."
Elano knew he was thinking that too. But since he would return after getting his goal then he didn't care and still had to stay here until whenever before he got the object and goal he wanted.
They drove and headed for Katherine's house first, no further conversation whatsoever.
