CHAPTER 33: Her Lies
GABRIEL’s P.O.V.
It’s been two hours since Erevell passed out, and still, nobody came to rescue us. Thirty minutes ago, I started carrying her towards the foot of the hill, ready to save her no matter what happen. But thankfully, I saw someone... A paramedic, maybe.
“Help!” I shouted.
They looked at me, surprised was in their eyes as they rushed towards us. They prepare the stretcher, though I’m still hesitating to let go of my bestfriend. She’s the most precious person that I’ve ever met... I can’t bear to lose her.
“How long does she lost her consciousness?” one of them asked.
“How fucking long?! I don’t know! What took you so long?! My bestfriend is dying in my arms!” I cried out of frustration.
They took Erevell from me, before one of the nurses gave me a bottle of water. She made me sat down, as they began carrying my bestfriend away from me.
“Calm down, sir. You need to calm down. For now, we are going to bring her to the nearest hospital possible.”
My breathing got hitched, still worrying about her. I know that she has this habit of passing out on people, but this one is completely different. It felt strange, knowing that something bad could happen to her. I clenched my fist, trying to prevent myself from bursting out into tears because of too much sadness and frustration.
“Now tell me, sir. Do you know someone we could contact for your friend?” she asked.
I inhaled then exhaled a small amount of air, catching my breath. I gasped, before nodding. In order to help my bestfriend, I should be useful and calm enough to tell them some helpful details that could save her life.
“Here... It’s her mother’s contact number.”
I gave her my phone, before she smiled at me.
“Thank you, sir. Now let’s get down there and follow the ambulance.”
I nodded, before following her lead. After a few minutes of walking, we reached the road, where Erevell was currently laying down on the stretcher. They got her inside of the ambulance truck, before moving away. I wanted to be there for her, but they didn’t let me. They left without me... And they took my bestfriend as well.
“Erevell!” I shouted, starting to run after them.
But the truck is fast enough... Fast enough not to let me get passed over them. I stopped running, panting as my knees tremble in shock and tiredness. I slowly kneel down, feeling a large hole punched in my chest. Just as I thought that I was brave enough to face the reality, my eyes started to get blurry, and all of the sudden, I cried.
“Erevell...” Droplets of tears fell down on the ground, making me see my own pitiful reflection.
Still dumbfounded by what just happened, a car stopped behind me, and there, I saw the nurse talking to me earlier.
“Come on, let’s follow your friend.”
Without any hesitation, I got inside of her car, allowing her to take me towards my bestfriend. Thankfully, it didn’t take us too long to get there. Until finally, we reached our destination.
“Thank you! Thank you so much!” I exclaimed, before running away. But before she completely faded away from my sight, I saw her smiled at nodded at me.
I run through the hallway, searching for the emergency room. But Erevell is not there, so I started looking in each and every room of the hospital building. As I get tired, the chances of seeing my bestfriend again was slowly slipping away in my senses. I’m starting to get lost, letting go of the last strand of hope left.
I sat down on the corner, hug my knees, then cry in pain. I almost fell asleep while doing that, but someone tapped my shoulders. Someone familiar.
“Gab... It’s me.”
When I looked up, I saw Erevell’s Mom standing next to me. Surprisingly, she doesn’t looked petrified, nor worried at all. She’s just... Plain looking. Her facial expression isn’t the same as before... Like when Erevell often passed out and ended up here, in the hospital. Now... She looked so relaxed, and I could see the acceptance in her eyes. But why?
“Ma’am...” I uttered.
“Erevell asked me to find you for her. Thankfully, I saw you in here. Do you want to see her?”
My brows furrowed in confusion. What is this? Why is her Mom doesn’t even look worried for her? Is there something wrong with them? I just nodded, badly wanted to see her again.
“Yes, ma’am, please.”
“Then come.”
She sweetly smiled at me, before motioning me to follow her. I sighed out of relief as we reached her hospital room, seeing her flashing a cheeky smile at me. I finally saw her again... But why can’t I be happy? I feel like there is something more about her condition... Something wrong... Something that she keeps on hiding away from me.
“Erevell...” I uttered her name.
“Hey, Gab!” She waved her hands on me.
“Are you... A-Alright?” That was probably the most stupid question I’ve ever asked to her right after what happened earlier.
“Yeah, I am great,” she stated, and I was surprised.
I was about to say another word once more when her Mom joined in, cutting our conversation off.
“I’ll leave you two alone to talk.”
“Sure, Mom.”
Her Mom kissed the top of her forehead before walking out of the room. As she completely vanished out of our sight, I walked towards Erevell, being nervous at the fact that her Mom is really acting weird right now... Same as her.
“Why are you looking at me like that?” she asked.
“Are you sure you’re alright? I mean, you completely passed out earlier... And you almost lost your pulse...” I stated, still worrying.
“I’m fine, Gab. As you see, nothing bad happened to me. You don’t need to worry that much.”
I shook my head, refusing to believe her nonsense lies.
“Tell me the truth, Erevell. Are you sick? Please tell me now... We’ve been friends ever since I was twelve and I couldn’t believe the fact that I’ve never confronted you about this...” I madly stated.
She looked down, a if avoiding my eyes. I knew it, something is wrong with her. Why couldn’t she just tell me about it? I am more than willing to listen to her more than anyone else in the world.
“Look at me, Erevell. Tell me the truth, please. Just... Tell me about it.”
“Why would I tell you about it if there’s nothing for me to tell, huh?” she asked in her annoyed voice.
I never saw her nor hear her acted this way. She’s... Furious, I guess? This is the first time that she’s going to be mad at me for grilling her at a nonsense thing... But it isn’t nonsense at all! I mean, she should tell me the problem.
“I don’t believe you,” I blankly stated.
“Then don’t, Gab. I’m not forcing you to do that.”
My brows nearly touched as it furrowed, right after hearing her words. How can she told me that? She made me so worried earlier, and now she’s acting like I don’t have any rights of find out the truth.
“What the heck?! Do you know what I felt hours ago seeing you fainted in my arms?! You made me so worried, Erevell! And now you’re acting like everything is just normal!”
“Because it is, Gab. It is. You’re the only one who’s making things so complicated... This isn’t a big deal! Besides, if ever you’re right, I can’t see any reason for me to tell you about it, either way,” she said, emotionless.
Again, I felt a huge hole has been punched through my chest. The pain... It was all surreal. I couldn’t believe what she just told me. Is being her bestfriend for over a decade was not a good enough reason for her to tell me the truth? Or does she even look at me like how the way I did to her?
“I’m your bestfriend, Vell...” My voice cracked up. “Is that still not a good enough reason for you? Or am I the only one thinking that way? Maybe... You don’t want me to be your friend at all...” I trailed off, feeling hurt.
When she looked up, I saw the guilt in her eyes. Though I wasn’t so sure if I’m right, either way. Maybe it’s just another lie... One of the thousands that she’s keep on telling me about like our friendship.
