CHAPTER 47: His Promises
EREVELL’s P.O.V.
When my Mom get inside of my room, I am now laying down on my bed, staring blankly at the ceiling. She looked over at my direction, maybe wondering where is Gabriel.
“Erevell? Where is Gab?” she asked me.
“He left...”
“He leave you all alone in here? And why didn’t you eat this ice cream?” she asked me again, the tub of ice cream sweating on the table.
“I couldn’t blame him either, Mom... He won’t get anything from taking care of me... Nor for loving me.”
“Oh, dear... Did you fought?” she came near me, as if she wanted to give me some comfort.
“I started it. I hurt him.”
“If he loves you, he’ll come back. I’m sure of that,” she assured me.
Just as I was about to say something, the door quietly swing open, revealing the man whom I thought will never going to see me again.
“I told you,” Mom whispered, smiling from ear to ear with her teary eyes.
“Mrs. Smith... I’m very sorry for leaving your daughter behind... I’m really sorry.” He sounded so worried, his eyes cannot met my mother’s.
“It’s alright, Gab. She is not your responsibility, after all. And I think... You two should have a talk.”
Gabriel nodded, before my Mom leave us alone, again. As she did, I get up into a sitting position on my bed, before Gabriel came over to my direction.
“Why are you still awake?” he asked me.
I bitterly smiled, before shaking my head.
“I don’t know either... Can I ask you something, Gab?”
“What is it?”
“Will you love someone else if I die?” He gasped for some air, before holding my hand.
“No... I don’t think I can. I promise, Erevell... I won’t.”
“But you have to... I mean, you have to continue living. That’s the promise that I wanted to hear from you...”
“No... Please don’t do this... I’m sorry, Erevell... I’m really sorry...”
“Just promise me... I don’t want to leave this place knowing that you will never going to move on from this pain. I wanted to make sure that you will... You will continue living.”
He immediately let go of my hands, before covering his mouth as he started sobbing like a child in front of me. I wonder why he’s being like this... But maybe because he could feel that I’m starting to let go of him... That I will be able to say my one lass goodbye sooner or later.
“Gab...” I tried to call him, but my chest started to feel suffocated... Tightening by each passing seconds.
“Gab!” I shouted, as I couldn’t breath. “I-I... I can’t breath, Gab... I-I... Don’t want to die yet... Please call my Mom...”
His eyes widened, unable to know what’s the next thing he should do. He came over to my direction, as if his presence could make me feel better. He shouted, calling the doctors and my mother’s name.
“Help! Please! Erevell, don’t pass out... Don’t leave us,” he cried. Those are the last words I heard before everything completely black out.
And then I woke up, seeing the bright white lights on the ceiling of my room. At first, I thought that I’m already dead, but not yet. Although I could feel that the sky had only given me a few more hours to stay here, to bid my farewells to Gabriel and to my mother.
“Gab! She’s awake now!” my Mom stated, waking up Gabriel.
“Mom...I thought I died,” I whispered, slightly delighted to the fact that God allowed me to bid my farewells to them.
“Erevell... Please don’t say that... We are not yet ready for you to go... Please... Not yet,” she begged.
“I wanted to stay, Mom... Believe me, I do. But I could feel it coming closer...” I whispered, feeling tired and weak.
I looked at Gab’s direction. He is currently sitting at the corner of my room, as if he wasn’t planning to come closer towards me. Mom took a step backwards, a if she knew that this is my final moments. She allowed Gabriel to come closer, before I heard them cried.
“Gab... Please talk to me...” I pleaded, trailing off and my voice sounded like it was almost begging.
“You need to take a rest,” that’s what he said, voice full of sorrow and pain while tears are streaming down on his face.
“I will... I know it will come in a few hours.”
He shook his head, before I saw the tears started to stream down on his face continuously. He secretly wiped it off, although I still caught him doing that.
“That is not what I mean,” he complained.
“Please come here... Hold my hand...”
“Stop, Erevell... Please don’t do that. I don’t want to hear it,” he cried, his voice full of pain.
When I realized that he is not planning to hold my hand, I decided that I should be the one to do it instead. He gasped, as my cold hand touched his skin.
“I love you... Please don’t cry, Gabriel... Please don’t...”
“I love you too... But Erevell...”
“I’m tired,” my voice broke out, admitting the truth in front the two of them. “I wanted to go... Please let me... I’m begging you.”
Their eyes widened at my words, before my Mom burst out sobbing. And then she held my hand as well, before nodding that immediately gave me comfort.
“It’s time, Gab... Let’s allow her to go... My daughter... She’s tired. She did everything to fight against this disease... I don’t want her to suffer anymore, Gab... So please... Let her go...”
“Thank you, Mom... Thank you for everything... Thank you for fighting with me. I love you... I love you so much...” My Mom nodded once again, before kissing my hand. “And Gab...”
I felt his grip tightened, before finally, he nodded at me, this time, he didn’t bother to hide his tears away from me. He cried like a little child, before he slowly nodded.
“Fine... You can stop being selfless now, my love. If you wanted to go, I’m now allowing you... Sorry if I forced you to stay awake... I’m sorry if I’ve been so selfish... Now I’m letting you go... I love you... I love you so much. You gave us a fair fight. Now it’s time for you to take a rest.”
“Thank you... For making me feel loved. For everything. I’m sorry for this Gabriel... I’m sorry if I will have to hurt you this way. Promise me you’re going to continue living...”
“I promise you... I promise you, Erevell.”
He kissed the top of my forehead, before I bitterly smiled, the heavy feeling in my chest is now gone. They finally let me go. And it’s time for me to do the same in life... It’s time for me to let go. I will finally come home to where I truly belong, but I will never forget the man whom had been my shelter in this painful but beautiful world. And with that, I finally close my eyes, not to see the darkness, but another bright, and wonderful lights of tomorrow.
