CHAPTER 36: The Confrontation

GABRIEL’s P.O.V.

I directly go into the nearest park at the hospital, before waiting for Erevell to arrive. I don’t know why, but my heart keeps on hurting after hearing those words from her previous doctor. I feel so betrayed, like after all those years, she carried her problems all alone. And the fact that she never even gave me a chance to help her out and be with her throughout those yeas is what makes me feel bothered.

“Gab!” Erevell joyfully stated, before running towards me.

She looked stern, her eyes are forming bags beneath while her lips are dry and pale. She isn’t even blushing despite the fact that it was cold outside. She was wearing a light pink sweater, her face smiling as if she haven’t got any problems at all.

Cancer is a shitty disease. It will ruin her life, everything about her. Only now that I noticed how tired she looked like, after I discovered everything. The doctor said that she’s dying, and I have to make sure that she isn’t. I have to make sure that she won’t be gone from me not now or any time sooner.

“Hey! Why are you looking at me like that?!” she asked me, before she chuckled as she sat down beside me on the bench.

“Erevell...” I trailed off, unable to know how to start.

“Why?” She moved a little bit closer, before putting her head on my shoulder. “Why did you ask me to come here, Gab? It’s pretty cold outside,” she stated.

I pushed her as gently as I can, making Erevell turn her gaze upon me. She looked confused, as if my facial expression is now unreadable.

“What’s the matter?” she pouted.

“Do you have... Something to tell me?” I asked her, hoping that she will say it herself.

She gulped, before looking down. She is now blushing, before she looked back to me.

“I-I... L-Lik–” She bit her lower lip, as if not wanting to continue her statement.

“Are you sick?” I asked her, and that question caught her off guard. She stopped, forgetting what she was about to say before staring at me.

“Where did you get that? Of course not, Gab,” she stated.

“Please tell me the truth. I am your best friend, Erevell,” I pleaded, by voice was begging her to tell me the truth.

“I know, I know. If something happens to me, you will be the first one to know, Gabriel,” she promised, although I know that she lied.

Her eyes was almost convincing, but I knew that she’s lying. The doctor already told me the whole truth, and what I need is just a confirmation and not another lie from her. I shook my head, before glaring at her. That made her plastered a confused expression upon her face.

“I found out something about you... Are sure you don’t want to tell me something, Erevell?” I asked her again, this time, showing her a brown envelope containing all the evidences that the doctor had given to me.

She looked shocked, unable to speak. She began trembling, as if afraid of me. Erevell tried to reach for my hand, but I pulled it away from her.

“Just answer me, Erevell!” I shouted.

“Gab... I...” she stammered.

Her eyes are full of pain and sadness, as if she didn’t want to admit the truth even though I already knew about it. I can’t understand why she hide this from me. I can’t find any reason for her to do so. We’ve been friends for years, but it seems like she didn’t even care about that at all.

“Tell me what is this, Erevell! Tell me!” I demanded, screaming at her while showing all of her medical records.

“Gab... I’m... I’m sorry, okay? I didn’t want any of this to happen...” she cried.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?! Why, Erevell?! You’ve been suffering for years yet you chose to keep it a secret... Why?!”

“It’s because I don’t want you to worry about me, Gab! I don’t want you to think that I’m doing all of this on purpose just to get your attention... You’ve got your whole life planned ahead of you... You can do anything that you can while me... I’m just... This... Pathetic and sick.”

“But I’m your best friend, Erevell! I have the right to know about the truth!” I demanded.

“But I don’t want you to get worried! I want you to enjoy your life without thinking about me!” she cried.

“But you are part of my life! You are, Erevell! You are... Am I not part of yours?” I asked her, before she burst out and cried out loud.

“I’m sorry, Gab... I was just to scared of everything... I don’t... I don’t want to make anyone feel like they have me as a responsibility just because I am sick!”

“Why? Are you dying? Just tell me the truth, Erevell!”

She bit her lower lip, and I felt nervous. I don’t want her to die. I just wanted her to confirm that. She’s my best friend, and loosing her will be the same as losing my one and only shelter.

“What now?! So you’re dying?!” I asked her, tears started to stream down on my face. She shook her head several times, before grasping my hand.

“No, no, Gab... I am not dying. I just have to follow my medications and everything will be alright soon... I promise... I am not dying,” she stated.

I pulled my hands away from her, before shaking my head. Well, she’s not dying. I don’t have to worry about her. All I have to do is to cool things down and think about everything. These are just too much to absorb in one day.

“I’ll be leaving now. Go back to the hospital... Your Mom must be looking for you.”

I stood up, before leaving her behind. She sat on the bench, while I started walking away from her. I was already a few meters away when she called my name, her voice sounds tired, and painful.

“Gab... Will you... Take me back to the hospital?” she asked me, but I decided to ignore her request.

“You came here alone. You can come back there as well,” And with that, I left her behind after our confrontation.
