Chapter 26

***Alpha Reece POV (cont)***

The reason the village got set up was because, as wolves, we are stubborn, judgemental and envious creatures. But we also fell in love, most of the time with a fated mate. Which meant, 99% of the time, you found your soul-mate. The problem with us wolves, and a few other creatures. Is that We would sometimes fall in love or be fated to a different species to yourself.
So wolf and human could be joined together. Wolf and Fae. Fae and human. There were a lot of new creatures being made. And fighting soon broke out within the packs. Old prejudiced flared and a lot of creatures, wolf, human, etc were getting slaughtered. Simply because they fell in love.

But found their place within the pack structure, or the Fae Hierarchy, was in jeopardy. So the high council stepped in. And after a few weeks of back and forth between the four packs, it was decided that an independent village be made, for the mixed, as they were referred to.
The mixed were delighted to have territory that they could claim and defend, if it became necessary.

Naturally, over time, the village became a small town and has thrived. As each pack had members in the town, each pack placed its own warriors there, to oversee the village. Over time, this became the police force. And was a perfect mix of human, wolf, Fae, etc.
Unfortunately, due to old fashioned views, out dated information or just plain stupidity, something would happen, that the emergency services just couldn’t cope with. It is like that right now. I was still not sure what had happened. All I did know, was that it was bad.

Raven pushed himself, propelling himself forward. We ran faster than we had ever run. As did my pack members. We made short work of getting to the motel. I phased back, I was completely naked, so I hurried in to the small reception. And spoke to the manager, who simply nodded and handed me a key.
I thanked him, then headed behind the motel, where a large shipping container sat. Inside the container, we would find every piece of clothing we would need. Including shoes, socks and underwear. I linked with my men.
‘As soon as you are ready, go. Do not wait for me. Your one and only job tonight is to assist the emergency services of Midway. GO!’

When I arrived at the site I was speechless. It looked like a side of one of the buildings, had been blown off. Resulting in large pieces of concrete, glass and iron to rain down on the general public. On cars, buses and pedestrians alike. People were screaming, for loved ones or their children. Sirens were still going off. The whole area looked like a bomb had hit it.
I quickly made myself known to the highest ranked officer there. Once he was aware of us, he thanked me then left us too it.

As more and more of my men arrived, I noticed unfamiliar wolves had arrive too. I was not overly concerned about them. It seemed, like us, they were there to help. My eyes landed on one group in particular. And I felt my stomach clench. As anxiety gripped my heart, I recalled a conversation with the fool Alpha-to-be, from the Moons Wane pack. He seemed okay. Maybe a tad slower than your average wolf. But likeable enough. Before meeting Julia again, I had hoped our accord, set up by previous Alphas, would stay in place once Jackson took over from his father.

I could not see that happening now. Not after knowing of the duplicitous actions of the currant Alpha. Their links with Mages. The use of potions and spells. It was all too much for me to stomach.
But here I was now, not only looking out over a disaster zone. I also found myself looking at the man who had Rejected Julia. Jackson Forester, along with some warriors, were currently, assisting the injured. It was very gallant of them, seeing as most of the trouble Midway saw, came directly from The Moons Wane Pack. I thought it very commendable of them. That was until the voice of my wolf broke into my thoughts.
Raven wanted to know why they were dressed so formerly. He was right. If you had come here especially to help out, I doubt you would be wearing dress trousers, and a shirt and tie. A wave of uneasiness and suspicion crashed over me.

Raven continued to voice his opinion. And it was one I wholeheartedly agreed with. If they were not here to help, why were they in Midway? Raven growled in my head. His raspy voice saying, ‘It had better not have anything to do with Julia!’
My anxiety kicked up a notch, as I admitted to myself, that thought had not entered my mind!
Before I started to help, I linked with Brad, who was one of my deltas. And occasionally, my driver. Accepting the promotion I had just given him, and one of his team mates, Brad thanked me profusely. I shut off the link. My last thought, before I focused on the job at hand, was I had better find him standing, just inside my apartment door. Standing on guard. I had a horrible feeling, Our Lady, Julia, was going to need it.

***Alpha Maximus POV***

When Lilian and myself arrived at Midway, it was to find the town in chaos. There were a lot of wolves here, from the surrounding packs. All working together. They had already sent the injured to hospital. And were now focusing their efforts on clearing away the rubble, left behind by the collapse of the apartment building.
I could see Lilian was upset, if it were me who had family in this town, I would be frantic. But Lilian is the Luna of the Moons Wane Pack. And a stickler for the rules.

One of my warriors walked toward me, ‘Yes, Alpha?’ He asked straight away.
‘Go with your Luna to the aid station. I believe it has been set up in the town hall. Watch her like a hawk.’
Lilian smiled at me, then followed the warrior when he walked off. I hope Lilian finds out that her family is safe. I surveyed the devastation again. I knew Jackson and the team I sent with him, were among the rescue workers. And I had to admit, that made me feel very proud.

I saw one of my pack members, so headed in that direction. Scanning the crowd all the time, trying to spot my son. When I finally made it over to the man, I asked about my son’s whereabouts. I could see the exhaustion on the warriors face. It was etched into every ash filled line.

My gaze followed the pointing finger, and fell on a group of people. There were a few injured, pinned under a huge slab of stone wall. That had come off the building. There was also around five rescue workers, one of which was Jackson. He was filthy. His clothes were torn, and it looked like he had suffered an injury to his forearm.
But it didn’t stop him, I realised what the men were trying to do, just as the huge piece of stone lifted up off the ground. Allowing the people trapped, to escape a horrible fate.

I watched as Jackson held out his hand and clasp the hand of a child, who was crying. He gently soothed the toddler, then sat the poor little thing down away from the collapsed stone.
A gruff voice shouted, ‘will you please hurry up. I can’t hold this much longer.’
I felt myself frown. The owner of that voice was someone I knew. Very well at one point in time. I moved closer, almost as if the voice was beckoning me.

I rounded the corner, that had blocked my view of Reece Cunningham. Well, well, well. It took a second for me to register what I was seeing. But when the sight in front of me clicked into place, an icy chill run down my back.
I can see now, why his company was taken clients away from my company.

Reece Cunningham had grown since the last time I had seen him, on that fateful night. I had lost my best friend that night.
My eyes took all of the man in. I could hear Brutus whistle in my head. ‘He turned out well, don’t you think so, Max?’
Although it sounded polite, to the discernible ear though, sarcasm dripped from every word.

Reece Cunningham was currently supporting the full weight of a huge piece of fallen building. His legs were braced against the weight, and his back and arms were taught with the strain. There was no tremor in his legs, no shaking of his body. He just stood there. Holding a piece of the building, up and away from the people who had been crushed underneath it. It was only when I saw Jackson running back over to offer help, that I snapped out of it.

And finally, joined the men.
