Chapter 28

***Julia POV***

When Reece had left so suddenly. I became worried about him. Over time I had grown to care for him very much. He took care of me. I had never had that before. It had seemed so alien to me at first. After a while, though. Well, it was just lovely.

I was a little bored, just sitting upstairs. I hadn’t been told to stay up here. So, I decided I would take a walk around the pack house. Try to familiarise myself with my surroundings.
I was surprised to see two Delta’s standing just inside the front door. As if on guard. I said hello to the two guys, then made to move passed them.

One guy, his name was Brad, held out his hand, stopping me and asked where I was going. I felt my eyebrows raise at such an impertinent question. I smiled at the man and said, ‘I’m going for a walk.’ And I strutted out the door. I mean, if Reece were to be believed then this whole packhouse and all the land, belonged to me. Therefore, these two guys should do as I say.

As I walked away, I fully expected to be stopped and told to go back to the bedroom. But I wasn’t. I was allowed to go wherever I wanted. With them following behind me, at a respectful distance. Clearly, Reece had told these men to guard me. Keep me safe. Knowing that he wanted to keep me safe, gave me a warm feeling all over. I didn’t know him all that well. I just knew that I liked him.

The house was quiet, I had to walk down 2 floors before I saw anyone, I think I may have startled the girl, as the omega fled at the sight of me. I didn’t look that bad. Did I?
I walked down more stairs, when I smelt the most amazing smell ever. I followed my nose, and quickly found my way into the large kitchen. There were a few people in here, and they all stopped dead, at the sight of me?

I was beginning to get paranoid. I didn’t understand why everyone I saw was so fearful of me.
A tall slender man walked towards me, I could see his head was bowed, in respect. “That’s weird” I thought to myself. These pack members didn’t know me. I was about to ask a question, but the slender man beat me to it.

‘My Lady, you should be resting. We all have strict orders from the Alpha. We are to care for you in his absence. Would you like anything? A drink or food, perhaps? My name is Max, My Lady.’
He finished what he was saying and just stood patiently in front of me, in anticipation of my response. I looked around at the other staff in the kitchen. As my gaze fell on each one, each one bent the neck, in respect. I was becoming uncomfortable, I needed to leave this room. But my stomach growled with hunger before I turned around.

I was ushered to a stool that sat by a counter. And the amazing smelling soup, I had originally smelt, was placed in front of me, with a hunk of bread.
I smiled at the young girl who bought the food over to me. I would say she would be around Evangeline’s age. She was very pretty, in that fresher faced way. Although her hair was tied back from her face you could just tell it was thick and lustrous.

As I ate, I got to know the workers in the kitchen. The slender man was called Max, and he was the chef for the pack. The older woman was called Mabel, she was the cook. Max and Mabel were a fated pair of mates. And you could see they were deeply in love. It made my heart squeeze with an aching feeling.

‘Babble, that was amazing. Thank you so much for the food.’ I went to turn toward the door, then I realised what I had just said. I thought about it, in the split second it took the memory to pop into my head, to me turning around and looking at the older couple. I could see they had frozen, fearful of moving in case it chased away the memory that was coming to the surface.

‘Babble. Why did I just call you that.’ It seems so familiar to me. I lowered my head in concentration. A swift pain shot through my temple, as I watched in my mind. I saw a little girl, with blonde curls, and a mischievous smile run across the kitchen floor toward a young woman. I said something to make the woman laugh. She opened her arms to me and I watched myself as a young girl, fling myself at her.

I heard the girl say, as if she was whispering into my own ear, ‘Babble, you are my bestest friend in the whole wide pack.’ The memory started to fade then, just as the little girl planted a sloppy kiss on the woman’s cheek.

I raised my head. And looked straight at the slightly older version, of the woman from my memory. She had unshed tears in her eyes. That soon started running down her face, when she opened her arms, hesitantly at first, to me. With no hesitation, I walked into the embrace and was immediately crushed with loving arms as Mabel said over and over, ‘Hello poppit. Hello my lil girl.’ I stood within the tight circle of Mabel’s arms and sobbed.

When we pulled apart, a little embarrassed at my behaviour, I looked at Max, Mabel’s husband. He didn’t say anything at first, then he went into a deep bow, and with a very posh accent said, ‘My Lady.’
My response surprised me as I curtseyed back, saying, ‘Good Knight, may I have a treat?’ In the same posh accent. I gasped at Max, who had tears in his eyes, just like Mabel. He walked toward me and put a heavy arm around my shoulders, giving me a one armed hug.

Feeling a little giddy, but not really knowing what to say, I blurted out. ‘Do you know where Alpha Reece is? I’d like to tell him about this.’ I smiled back at my childhood friends, and they clasped my hands, not wanting to let the contact end just yet.

It was the girl, Tracy, that answered me. ‘Alpha went to help with the disaster in Midtown. It sounded pretty bad, to be fair.’ Max hissed at the girl, to shut up. But it was too late for that. I wanted to know everything that was currently going on. About fifteen minutes later, I rushed out of the pack house, following both Max and Mabel, as they showed me where the pack hospital was located.

Max said something about bringing a car around, but I was already sprinting away from them. I could hear them calling me back to them, but I was gripped by an urgency I just couldn’t explain. Brad and the other guy, rushed after me. Trying to get me to stop; or at least slow down. I didn’t. So they sped up, to keep up with me. If I had my logical head on, I would have wondered, why was it I seemed to be able to run faster than these two Delta’s. But, I didn’t think that. I only had one thought in my head.

I made it to the pack hospital, and saw it was packed with injured people and phased wolves. I ran straight toward the desk and informed them who I was. And what my job was. There was a stunned silence, that only lasted a moment, before the doctor that had treated me, approached.

After inquiring about my health, and me brushing off the question with impatience, I was put to work. I was in my element. I knew how to do this. And in all honesty, missed it. So much. I picked up the waiting list, and started calling for the injured to come forward, if they could. I greeted a young man, who was holding a bleeding arm. I assured him he was in good hands, and ushered him into a cubicle. And got to work.

***Alpha Reece POV***

Night had fallen. Everyone who had helped, now sat in the town hall banquet hall. There must have been over a hundred of us. It made my heart swell with pride to see the response from the others packs. Today had been a bed day for Midway, and it’s inhabitants.

The police chief was standing with the fire chief. I could see them talking. I could also see the urgency in the conversation. I made a gesture to the other Alpha’s present, then joined the two men.
‘Gentlemen, is there something we should know?’ I asked lightly. In a, I’m just enquiring, tone.

The two chiefs looked at each other, then looked at the four Alpha’s standing in front of them.
‘We need to speak with you all, obviously. But it is best we do so in private.’ Stated the police chief.

We followed the men into the Mayor’s office, and waited for one of them to explain what was going on.
