Chapter 24

Gaston POV

Tara walked sluggishly behind me, and I can tell it's because she is drunk.

The moment I opened the door, I heard my son crying nonstop, and the caretaker, Victoria, kept on trying to stop him.

"Welcome, sir, and maam,"  the nanny greeted me, and I went to my baby's side.

"Don't you know how to do your job? Why's the baby crying this much?" I snapped at the woman and collected my child.

I don't like seeing him cry so much. I rock the baby, trying to stop his cries, but to no avail.

"Sorry, sir, he just started crying all of a sudden," she said, as if scared I'd do something bad to her for making my baby cry.

Tara walks up to see the baby, and the baby cries die down slowly as he sees Tara.

Tara, who was still tipsy, had a sad smile on her face as she saw the baby.

Tara smiled, and she used their index finger to play with the baby, and the baby smiled widely.

"How are you doing that?" I was surprised by the scenario.

"May I cradle the baby?" Tara asked, and I saw her eyes swamped in tears. I wonder why she's crying, though.

I thought of giving her the baby, but I don't want a prostitute near my child ever again, not even his mother.

"You can't! He's not a fan of strangers; he'll just cry  more." I turned the baby away from her sight, and the baby started crying once more.

"Hey, it's okay, Daddy's here." I rocked the baby, but he didn't stop crying.

His cries multiplied after taking him away from Tara. Why is the baby acting like this? He's usually cranky around people and me sometimes, but I saw him happy for the first time when he had Tara's attention.

"Oh my goodness," the nanny shouted, and a loud thud followed.

The moment I turned back, I saw Tara unconscious on the sofa. I rushed to her side and saw wet tears stain her eyes and her gorgeous face.

It's the effect of the alcohol, I guess. I hope she's okay.

She kept on whispering something, but I understood, "He was innocent. He didn't deserve to die. Mummy misses you, baby." She murmurs, and the baby stops crying and sleeps.

I signal the nanny to come carry the baby and take him to his room. I was left alone with Tara as she slept peacefully, yet she looked disturbed and worried.

I remembered what she whispered: "Mummy misses you, baby." What did she mean? And why was she so emotional around my son?

I pushed the thoughts aside and carried Tara in my arms. She's the perfect size in my arms, and she shuffles in my arms, snuggling my coat.

I brought her to the room, and her clothing stinks with alcohol. I wanted a maid to come and change her into new clothes, and I tried my best not to look at her as she got changed. I decided to take a shower, and when I got back to the room, she was on one side of the bed, as if she knew someone was supposed to sleep beside her.

I stare at her as she is in one of my shirts. She is goddamn sexy, by the way, and her beautiful chestnut hair rests beautifully on my bed. I studied her features, and my heart flutters when I see her smile a bit. My eyes flickered at her cute lips, and I fought my wolf to stop myself from kissing her breathlessly.

I shift my gaze and blink a couple of times. I should sleep before I end up waking her and doing something drastic; besides, I already promised her I wouldn't make her uncomfortable.

I went to sleep on the couch to prevent the bad thoughts in my head from happening.

I woke up, and the smell of my mate filled my nose. Goodness, I barely slept because I was half awake. My mate's presence hunts me even in my sleep. I want to mark her badly.

I looked at my mate, still sleeping, and I went to the washroom to quickly wash up. When I came back to the room, I saw my mate sitting in the room confused, and her gaze met mine. She looked a bit scared.

"What the hell? How did I get here?" she said, standing up to see herself.

I smirked, remembering her behaviours at the bar. It was kind of cute, though.

I told her everything that happened, but I excluded the part where she saw my child.

She looked at me as if I were a threat to her. What did I do? I only helped her.

"Did you take advantage of me while I was drunk?" She asked with a glare and hugged her body.

"No, Tara, I'm a good guy; instead of asking me questions, you should be thanking me for helping you." I sent a charming smirk, and I saw her smile a little.

Such rear beauty.

"Thank you," she whispered.

I called the maid in, and Tara looked a bit tensed.

"Take care of her and get her new clothes," I told the maid, as I already told them to order new ones for her to wear this morning.

I entered the walk-in closet and got dressed for the day.

When I entered the room, Tara was already dressed, and the maids were not to be seen. I caught Tara looking worrisome and sad, but she instantly changed her face when she noticed me.

I remembered her words from last night and wanted to ask what she meant, but a knock on the door interrupted me.

"Come in," I said, and Victoria entered the room looking tired and stressed.

"Sir, the child has been crying non-stop, and no matter what I try, he just cries more, plus he isn't eating anything I feed her."

My heart raced, and I sped to his room, where I heard Tara's footsteps behind me.

"Hey, child, stop crying; it's not healthy." I cradled my baby, and I saw Tara behind me holding her chest, and her eyes started to tear up.

I continued pampering the baby, but he didn't listen.

Tara walked up to the baby in my arms, and she had a sad smile.

What surprised me was the way the baby reacted when he saw her.
