Chapter 31

Tara POV

A few weeks have passed since I became Lucian's nanny. At first Gaston made it hard for me because he kept on nagging me or sending me hateful glares. I wondered why, but I didn't know what exactly.

He started changing his behaviour towards me gradually; it was going great. Ever since I saved Nora from an asthma attack, he's been thankful, and he even gave me a beautiful reward. He even decided to send his mom abroad for a vacation, but I think it's because he thinks he's the cause of his mother's condition.

After that time Gaston has been nice towards me. Most afternoons he'd leave his study room to take a walk with me and Lucian.

I found myself falling for Gaston gradually, and the feeling is mutual. I remember yesterday when he took Lucian and me for ice cream, and before we went home, we shared a passionate kiss for the first time. While kissing Gaston, it felt like I'd kissed him before, but I just let it go because I thought it was my imagination.

Gaston had admitted his love to me. Most times while we are taking a walk with baby Lucian, he always says things that make me believe Lucian and I are connected. I'm not going to lie; every time I'm with Gaston and Lucian, my whole world seems perfect, like a blessing.

While I was receiving fresh air in the garden

I sense Selena's presence; I still ask myself how I'm able to do that. Selena's presence is very, very suspicious and weird. It was unlike her.

Selena has always considered me her enemy because she's in love with him, and he doesn't return the same feelings to her but to me.

Tara, can I talk to you?" She says.

I opened my eyes and asked a bit worried. "What's up, Selena?"

She sat beside me. "I need to tell you something. While I was on my way to my room last night, Gaston approached me and gave me a dirty look. I noticed those looks a week ago, but I didn't take it seriously... I think Gaston's losing interest in you."

I mentally rolled my eyes and played along.

I raised an eyebrow. "Really? That's news to me."

She leaned in. "He's tired of your games, Tara. He wants you out, but he doesn't know how to end it, so he'll rather cause a scene that will make it look like you are the problem."

Okay, now she's crossing the line. What a fake. "I don't believe you, Selena; please leave."

She pretended as if she was surprised. "You don't? I'm just trying to help."

"Help? You've never been friendly, Selena, especially to me, so tell me why you would suddenly care about me."

She shrugged, maintaining an innocent facade that's almost believable. "Maybe I've changed. Maybe I want to see you happy."

This is enough drama. I stood up, my voice firm. "I appreciate the act, Selena, but I'm not buying it. Gaston and I are fine, and your weak lies bore me out.

I turned on my heels and went to check on Lucian. He was still sleeping, so I decided to read in the study room.

Just then the door opened and revealed a worried Gaston.

"Tara, I need to ask you something," Gaston said, his eyes searching for mine.

My heart sank. "What is it?"

I couldn't shake off the feeling of unease as Gaston confronted me in the study.

"Selena told me something," Gaston began, his voice measured. "About you and Chad."

My eyes widened. "What did she say? And how did she know Chad?"

I don't ever want Chad to interfere with my life. He's bad luck to me, and he wants to ruin my new relationship with Gaston and Lucian.

"How she knew him is not necessary right now, Tara." I eyed Gaston.

"You know Chad as well." My voice was now low. I don't want anything to do with that excuse of a man, Chad, but Gaston seems familiar with him.

"Calm down, Tara. I don't know Chad." I sensed a lie in Gaston's words but decided to believe him.

Gaston's gaze locked onto mine. "She claimed you're meeting in secret, that you're plotting something."

I laughed, relief washing over me. I'm overthinking all this. This is all part of her plan. "That's ridiculous. Selena's just trying to drive us apart."

Gaston's expression remained sceptical. "I want to believe you, Tara, but I need the truth. Are you hiding something?"

My heart ached. Gaston's doubt stung.

"I swear, Gaston, there's nothing between Chad and me. Selena's manipulating you."

Selena's lies had done their damage, and now I had to repair the rift. I waited, my heart pounding.

"I don't think Selena would be foolish enough to lie to me, so why now?" he questioned.

I stepped closer, my voice firm. "Because she wants to hurt me, us. I don't know what her motives are, but I know I'd never betray you."

Gaston's eyes searched mine, seeking truth. I held his gaze, pouring all my conviction into my words.

"I trust you, Tara," he said finally. "But I'll investigate. If Selena's lying, she'll pay for this. I need to figure out what's going on. Selena's been acting strange lately."

I nodded, a mix of emotions swirling inside me. Gratitude, fear, and determination.

I wouldn't let Selena destroy us.

As Gaston pulled me into a tight hug, I knew I had to take action.

It was time to expose Selena's lies. I can't risk losing this relationship with Gaston.

As Gaston pulled me into a tight hug, I felt a wave of relief.

But later, alone in my room, doubts crept in.

What was Selena's goal?

And why was Gaston keeping secrets from me?

I walked back to the nursery, my mind reeling with Selena's words. Is Gaston losing interest in me? It couldn't be true.

Selena's accusations flashed in my mind. Had she already poisoned Gaston against me?
