“Your dad is going to hear about this and you know that he is going to scold you.” I was
silent all the time she was talking. The lawyer was beside me shaking his head because
He knew I was going to get a word from my father.
“Better come home this weekend because I need to understand why you keep getting in
so much trouble” Hanging up the phone in anger. No, I was so scared to go back home
because There will be a family meeting waiting for me.
I called Emma and told her what happened. She was so sad that she was the cause of all
my problems.
“I am so sorry. I don’t know how I can ever repay you.” She kept pleading over the phone.
“It’s all right, it’s all right” I kept saying, because of that point I really thought I could do
anything for her.
My mother called the driver to come pick me up and take me home. During that journey
home I was thinking of every excuse I could give to calm my mother down. She is going to
be on my neck the whole weekend .
“ I heard you got yourself into a situation with the police James, what's up with that?” the
driver asked.
“Well it was for a legit reason there is this girl yeah and she was in trouble so I wanted to
help her. I didn’t expect the police would get involved and it all went to shit”.
I was at the backseat thinking about everything I will say from when I get into the house
and see my mother.
When I got into the house Immediately We went to the stairs and ran into my room so to
avoid seeing my mother, maybe she would calm down before she came up to my room to
see me.
“Oh my God, I’m back in this hell hole”
Being at home always reminded me of my family issues and how things are not going well
at all. Basically, my family came together whenever they wanted to scold me for doing
something wrong. That is the most time I see my dad with my mother. I guess sometimes I
make enough trouble so I could get them together in the same space, maybe Those are
reasons to solve their issues.
Within minutes of laying down on my bed my phone rang. Emma was calling me on the
phone.
I picked up the phone and answered the call.
“Hey what’s up…Emma” taking deep breaths. my mind was racing. I couldn't keep my
thoughts under control. I guess I was still that scared kid as usual. All he just wanted was
his parents to love him and also wanted the love of a woman. Is that something so hard to
ask for? I ask myself this every single time.
Yes, at this point I am very frustrated. I found love but it came with so many hurdles.
“Are you alright still? because I know you would get in trouble with your parents”
“When you get the response from your father and mother let me know,” she said with a
worried tone in her voice.
“OK, I’ve heard you… there is no need to worry I’ll be fine” I was not concentrating on her
words again I was just thinking of how I’m going to be yelled at.
That evening my mother came back home. I could yeah yelling from downstairs. “Where is
James? Where is James? That boy is going to give me a heart attack” Her voice was
getting closer to my door from the staircase. I could swear my heart wanted to jump out of
my chest.
“Open the door, James!”
Oh, it was so obvious she was so angry with me.
“Come and open the door”
She was hitting the door so hard. She could knock the door down if she had to.
I ran so fast to the door. As I opened the door she was right in front of me. She pushed me
with two of her fingers. I almost fell on my back.
“What’s your problem James, do you want to raise my blood pressure?” She was standing
holding her waist, pointing her phone at me. She was so furious her face looked so red like
it was going to blow up. I just sat on my bed in silence crossing my arms.
“ What is your problem? I sent you to school to get a degree and you ended up in prison.”
Now she is breathing heavily Staring at me in disappointment. I could not Look her in the
eyes. Because I knew how much trouble I got myself into.
“Every time you get in trouble you have to bail out every time you give me headaches…
One day will not be there to help you with all this trouble you cause for yourself ”
I continued being silent because I did not know what to say.
“Ma is not like that” pausing to see if she had calmed down a bit and maybe I could get
some words in.
“What is it like then?… tell me try and make me understand cause I don’t know if you’re
doing drugs now”
“ you know this was a drug case” she emphasised, “when the lawyer called me and told
me everything the police said.”
I was physically stuck in one position sitting for a long while getting the advice of my life.
“What do you have to say for yourself?” she kept asking.
“I… I… I am sorry I did it for a friend she needs is my help she needed protection ” I tried
explaining and reasoning with her to understand my side of the story
“What if you died, how do you want me to feel? what if you got shot by someone or
kidnapped or something? You don’t seem to consider All this every time”
I was silent and embarrassed because I put them through a lot of worries.
“OK I’m calm now, please explain to me why you made such a reckless decision.”
I could not say anything because I was scared I would get yelled at if my reasons were
stupid.
I had made bad decisions in my life and just felt very stupid.
“Come on” she shouted
“I…I was trying to protect someone that I am seeing. She is my girlfriend.” She stared at
me shocked, that's the reason why I decided to be involved in this situation.
“So because of a girl I want to throw your life away” it looked up at Ceiling crying. she
started laughing mockingly and scarily.
“You are lucky this didn’t reach the news” she paused, looking like she was lost in her
thoughts right now.
“This would’ve hurt your dad's business. Imagine customers and partners finding out for he
is the father of a drug dealer”
Exaggerating the whole situation.
“I am not a drug dealer mom” I replied, rolling my eyes.
“Don’t roll your eyes at me” she hits me at the back of my head with her hands
“ I need to meet this girl that is making you go through all this trouble for her”
“OK mom”
I smiled because her anger towards me had calmed down. Trying to soften her heart
further with a face so bashful she couldn’t resist.
“I’m still angry at you James, don't smile at me” I tried hugging it out with her.
“You know our dad is coming to yell at you right and this time I can’t help you” no she
decided to stand up and use my room.
“Try and not get in trouble next time. when you see trouble walk the other way” she shakes
her head as she walks out of the room.
Now my mind can get a little bit of rest before dad Comes home.
I try to sleep all the worries in my mind away. When I get to dinner I will not be able to look
my dad in the eye.
