Chapter 22
JULIET~~~~
"Juliet, Juliet," my desk mate, Bria called startling me.
"Y-yes?" I answered.
"What's up with you?" she asked once she confirmed that she got my attention.
"Nothing at all," I replied. "Why?"
She cocked an eyebrow. "I've called you about five times already and you only responded just now. There's definitely something on your mind."
I waved it off, looking back at my computer. "It's nothing. I'm just too concentrated on this passage."
"Girl, we've gone past two more passages after the one you're on right now," she said still giving me a curious look.
"Oh."
"Something's definitely bothering you," she insisted.
"Miss Dalton and Miss Wyatt, would you like to share the topic of your discussion with the class?" the Spanish teacher, Mr Hart asked. He was short, barely 4'9 feet and even worse was also bald. He had a really annoying voice and was also very strict. He was my least favourite teacher and now I've fallen into his hands.
I shot Bria an accusing glare, shifting the blame of being caught on her.
"You would have been caught sooner or later," she whispered as we stood up.
"I'm waiting," he said as the class started to chatter among themselves. "Quiet!" he yelled. "Or you get detention!"
"Sir, Juliet was stuck on the passage we just translated and I was just explaining a few things to her," Bria lied easily. She went on to select the words with translation difficulties I was supposed to be having problems with and translated them with ease. One of the perks of being a straight As student is that she had the smarts to back up whatever lies she told about academics.
"I see," Mr Hart said. "Juliet I think you are declining way more than you should. You used to be a straight As student just like Bria."
"Yeah. Used to," someone at the back said and the class erupted in laughter.
"What's so funny, huh?" he asked before looking at the both of us. "Both of you can sit down but no more talking. If you have any problems then come to me or do it together during your free time after class. I would not condone this in my class again. Understood?"
"Yes, sir," we replied in unison and sat down.
"You're welcome," Bria said without looking at me. "Now focus or you will be called out again."
Bria has been my desk mate since the first year of school. We've grown together but I can't exactly call her my friend because I don't have any but she's the closest thing to one. She's a tall girl of about 5'8 at eighteen which made her a perfect fit for the girls' basketball team where she's a top scorer. She is very social and is even friends with seniors and the hot football guys in the school. Along with her straight As, she's the model student any school would die for. I can imagine colleges falling over each other to get her to attend theirs when she graduates.
Dad insisted that we all attend a high school for humans once we were done with middle school because he wanted us to understand the lives of humans and our superiority to them. He wouldn't admit it, but we all knew he also wanted to protect us from the politics and dangers in that of a werewolf high school.
I'm currently in my final year in high school and I wish it already ended. I was happy when I realized I could attend a human high school because I wanted to be close to humans. I've never thought of them as the inferior race like most other werewolves are fond of calling them. I wanted to be friends with them and I was ecstatic to meet them.
That was until I actually did. I met Bria first and she was nice, beautiful and way taller than me. I was immediately attracted to her but I wasn't exactly social since I grew up locked up in the mansion with only my siblings and the maids to talk to most times.
I couldn't connect with a social butterfly like Bria on a personal level and she was always surrounded by people, clubs and the basketball team. So we just stayed as acquaintances. She would sometimes talk with me but she was too busy to give me that much time. Even then, she was always humble and she once told me I was the only friend she had. That meant a lot to me but I didn't feel like a friend to her so I couldn't really enjoy it.
Then came Aria, the bitch of the century. I would never say that to her though. She was by no means a match for Bria. She was academically poor, sassy, and a bully. But she was considered the most popular girl in class because of her beauty and her family's wealth. Her family apparently donated a lot to the school so she was basically a VIP in school.
I got myself on her radar when I defended a classmate who was being bullied by her and reported her and her gang directly to the principal. They got a suspension for it and blamed me for it ever since.
Their demands included bullying others in their stead and getting bad grades all through high school. They warned that telling on them would only lead to my video getting leaked one way or the other. While they would only get a slap on the wrist, I would be traumatized my whole life. The same consequences await failure to fulfil their demands or transferring out of the school. They would beat me up, make me bully others and still make me pay for their torture. She has literally made high school hell for me.
I felt a tap on my shoulder and I flinched, startled by the sudden contact.
"What's wrong with you, Julie?" Bria asked with a concerned look this time. I never agreed to that nickname but she doesn't care either. "You are way too distracted."
"I-it's nothing," I stuttered. "What's going on? Why is everyone leaving?"
She sighed. "Class ended five minutes ago, Julie. I was working on some translations and asked you to accompany me to the cafeteria. I just realized you weren't even listening."
"I'm sorry," I apologized. "Are you done with your work?"
"Yeah," she replied. "I can just do the rest at home."
"Okay then," I said forcing a smile. "Wanna go eat now?"
She gave me a curious look for a bit before replying. "You don't have to force a smile because I know you are not happy."
"Oh," I said and just stayed silent.
She rolled her eyes. "It's okay if you can't tell me. I would be here if you need anything though."
"Thanks," I said almost in a whisper."
"Yeah, yeah. Let's go eat, I'm famished," she stood up. "Besides you're looking scrawny these days. Are you on a diet?"
"Nope," I said packing up my books. "I've been training a lot more these days though."
She cocked her eyebrow at me as we walked. " Training? What training?"
"Martial arts," I winked. "I wanna be a black belt at least."
"What for?" she asked. "You could just join the basketball team with me. They are easygoing and would accept you easily."
"Thanks but no thanks," I shook my head. "Martial arts is convenient for me."
"Why though?" she probed.
"Just because," I shrugged. Of course, I couldn't tell her my father was the Alpha of the most powerful pack in the country and I needed to be strong and ready to protect myself and my family from danger which is a common thing in the world of werewolves.
"You are weird," she laughed. "In a cool way though. I bet you can easily beat up those big guys on the school's football team.
"I'm not that good yet," I laughed. "But I might be able to beat you up if you cross me though."
"I wish," she scoffed still laughing. "I'm pretty sure you wouldn't be able to catch me in the first place."
We laughed and joked our way into the cafeteria which was utter chaos. Almost everyone inside was loud and they all had no table manners. As a kid who was raised in such a sheltered household, I could never get used to this chaos. Unlike Xavier, we weren't allowed to venture into the pack much. This is one of the many reasons why I don't eat in the cafeteria. I would have never come here if Bria hadn't invited me.
At the far end of the wall were Aria and her gang, surrounded by boys in the class as they watched something on her phone and laughed. My heart skipped a beat when I saw that. There was every possibility that they were watching the video of my tits and I quickly averted my eyes as I couldn't bear to watch them.
"Juliet," July called grabbing my attention. "Seriously you need to take care of whatever is wrong with you."
"Sorry," I replied. "Are they here yet?"
"Yeah," she smiled. She has always been gentle, but unfortunately, I couldn't return that smile, because the same girl who is making my school life hell, is here in this party.
I thought she was human.
