Chapter 30
DEXTER RUSSELL~~~~
I groaned as the persistent ring of the alarm woke me up at 4:00 am. I would never be up at this time if it weren't for that Deliah. She called for me.
I groggily trudged to the bathroom where I washed up first before brushing my teeth. As I brushed, I looked at myself in the mirror and the words from yesterday replayed themselves in my head "getting mated to you was a curse". They were the most offensive words I've ever heard anyone utter and I just couldn't get over it.
Once I was done, I dressed up in casual blue Jean trousers and a black T-shirt. I had no time for my hair so I just left without doing anything to it. I needed to be there by 4:30 am and the location is a fifteen minutes drive from the house. I'm almost out of time. I hurried outside, took out the Bentley from the garage, and sped out of the compound.
It was eerily quiet as I drove down the road. I don't usually drive around at this time so it was new to me. Even the occasional meetings I've had with her were never this early. To an extent, something feels fishy.
"Hey, Enzo," I said through the mind link. He's been pretty quiet since yesterday and has kept his silence since I woke. He's still mad about Isabelle and I wouldn't be giving in to his demands any time soon. Isabelle was wrong so she should be the one apologizing and not me.
"What?" he answered surprisingly but his voice was cold.
"Got any idea why she would summon us so early?" I asked.
"Why do you care?" he asked. "It's not like you listen to anything I have to say anyway. You just do what it is you want and I don't care anymore."
I rolled my eyes. "This isn't the time to be whining. We are both in danger if she's out to harm us."
"Us," he scoffed. "There is no us. There has never been. It has always been you and only you. You only need me to fight and that's it."
I rolled my eyes. "Do you really have to be such a hard head right now? Why can't you see that Isabelle is wrong? You trust her way too much."
"I'm just doing what every guy does for his woman," he argued. "I will trust her until it is proven beyond reasonable doubt that she is wrong."
"You've always been such a softie for her," I sighed. "I love her and you know that. Why are you acting like I don't?"
"Love is different from trust," he retorted. "And you don't trust her."
"Can we talk about this later? We still have to figure out why we are meeting a witch in the dark when they are most dangerous."
"Why?" he asked. "Are you scared?"
"Scared of Deliah?" I scoffed. "Not a chance."
"Then there's no need bothering about it," he said. "Besides you said it yourself, witches are more comfortable in the dark and the sun will be out soon anyway."
He's right. There's nothing to be worried about since it's just Deliah. I must have become paranoid from stress but I can't shake off this nagging feeling that something is wrong.
I reached the location just in time. It was a cave as usual, on the outskirts of my territory. I wonder how she manages to find these caves. It's a different one every time.
"Come in," her small voice said, echoing from the empty walls of the cave. It felt a little bit ominous.
"What do you have for me now?" I asked as I got in.
"Be careful," Enzo warned. "She's not alone."
"I've put a lot of effort into my research but I can't find a way to lift the curse. For every research I make, I come to the same conclusion," she said. Her voice was a little unsettled and she seemed really tense.
"Can you pinpoint how many?" I asked Enzo. My eyes had adjusted to the darkness now and I could see Deliah clearly as she stood a good distance away from me
"No," he said. "They're hiding their presence really well so I expect them to be at least five or more."
"Dexter?" she asked. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah, continue," I replied.
"Well, the conclusion I've always come to is that only the witch who cursed you can free you."
"And where is the witch?" I asked.
She looked at the ground. "We still can't find her
"What?" I asked.
"I need you to understand that the missing witch was one of our most elite witches. She could easily erase her trace and hide her existence from us if she wants to.
"So you are saying you are useless, right?" I asked. "I wanna attack them," I said to Enzo.
"Wait!" she said quickly with panic in her voice. "With a little more time I'm sure we can track her location. I just need a little more time."
"Then why did you call me?" I asked.
"T-To relay the message," she stuttered. "We agreed to meet."
My eyes glowed as I glared at her. "I would ask again," I said as I walked to her. "Why did you call me here if you made no progress on the job I asked of you."
"S-Stop," she said moving backward.
"They're moving," Enzo informed me as they began to move from the shadows to surround her.
My fingers extended into claws as I growled. "You think a few members of your coven could stop me?"
"I-I wouldn't be doing this again," she said. "At first I took up this job to soothe my curiosity but now I'm tired. Find the witch who cursed you yourself!"
I sneered. "Wrong choice."
I leaped towards them with the intent to kill everything in my path as their chants got louder, but they disappeared before I could get to them.
"Teleportation, huh?" I stopped, letting my body return to normal.
"Bitches!" Enzo yelled.
"Don't worry," I sighed. "They just collectively made themselves my enemies now."
"What are we gonna do?!" Enzo growled. He's really sensitive about this curse.
"Dunno," I shrugged as I walked out of the cave. "But first I'm gonna trample on that coven until their remains turn into mush."
"I guess it's time to return home. Nothing is keeping me here anymore," I sigh as I get into my car. "Xavier must be a man by now."
