Watch you sleep

After having dinner together, Apollyon escorted Lilith to her chamber and again reminded her of tomorrow's special day. Then, he gazed at Zoey, who was standing right behind Lilith.

"Keep your eyes open, else it will be your last day tomorrow," Apollyon openly threatened her. However, those words were a reminder for Lilith not to attempt to run away.

Lilith swiftly turned around and headed inside the chamber, slamming the door in Apollyon's face. Zoey was a bit terrified to this reaction of her mistress. She went inside when Apollyon asked her to.

Lilith loosened the strings of the corset to get out of the gown. Zoey approached her and helped Lilith in getting out of the gown. "Miss, I will bring the nightdress for you," she humbly said and went to the dressing room.

When she returned, Zoey found Lilith seated on the edge of the bed, in deep contemplation. She silently walked up to her and whispered for her.

Lilith took the nightdress from Zoey and thanked her. After she changed into that, she went to the washroom to wash her face before going to bed.

Drying her face with the towel, Lilith looked into the mirror. "I am not ready for this marriage. I cannot run away from him either," she sighed, her fingers clutching the towel in her hands.

Lilith came out of the washroom and asked Zoey if she had her dinner.

"No. I was waiting for Miss Lilith's return. I will do it after she sleeps," Zoey replied and took the towel from her. "I will brush your hair, Miss," she said and asked her to sit in front of the dressing table.

"I will do that, Zoey. You should have your dinner," Lilith asserted.

Zoey refused humbly. "I cannot do that, Miss," she said, keeping a tiny smile on her lips.

"I cannot bear to see you hungry, Zoey. Go and have dinner. I saw the servants were heading to the common dinner hall. When the dinner will finish, you may not get anything to eat," Lilith insisted.

"But, Miss Lilith, I cannot take my eyes off you," Zoey said, recalling Apollyon's command.

"I won't go anywhere, Zoey. I know how important your life is! You should have your dinner. I won't sleep either unless you return. I will wait for you," Lilith asserted, finally succeeded in convincing Zoey.

"I will return soon, Miss Lilith," Zoey assured her, and she left for the dinner hall.

Lilith sat on the velvet stool in front of the dressing table. She took off the hair clips from her hair and placed them into their respective cases. Picking up the wooden comb, Lilith gently started brushing her hair.

Numerous thoughts had occupied her mind once again. The plan to kill the Devil Lord failed, instead she had to marry him. Amidst those thoughts, she realized she liked Apollyon's honesty in answering her questions.

Moreover, the confidence with which he said he didn't kill her father, made her think perhaps she had missed something that day. "Apollyon was right. I need to find who killed my father that day and why," Lilith murmured and her hand stopped. She placed the comb on the dresser before rising to her feet.

Lilith went to the window next to the bed and opened it. The cool breeze entered in and lightly hit her tender face. She gazed at the night sky, brimming with thousands of stars. The moon could nowhere be seen.

"Father, Mother, I will get married tomorrow. I do not wish to marry him, but I have no other option. Father, I promise I will find out the truth behind your demise," Lilith said in a low voice.

Lilith felt a sudden chill because of the cold air and quickly brought her arms together when a warm cloak covered her. Quickly, she tilted her head to check and found Apollyon behind her.

"What are you looking outside?" Apollyon asked, standing beside her.

"Nothing," Lilith didn't want to share her thoughts with him.

"That was not the reply I expected," Apollyon affirmed, a cheeky smile gracing his lips.

"Why are you here?" asked Lilith as she turned to face him. "You were supposed to leave," she stated.

"I thought I should stay by your side until you fall asleep. I'm glad I stayed behind because you sent away Zoey," Apollyon asserted and looked outside.

Both of them turned silent when Apollyon broke the ice. "A ten-year-old girl could not have survived among the devils. Even among us, you will find evil ones who want to harm you. Keeping you away from my sight was the best choice. I don't understand childhood or teenage days, and neither do I understand family. However, for you, I am ready to understand that phase of a human's life as well," Apollyon said with a menacing expression.

"How? You can't return me those years," Lilith stated.

"You are only twenty, Lilith, unlike me, who is a thousand-year-old creature. I will find the murderer of your father. Tell me what happened that day," Apollyon said, his head tilting to face her.

"I don't want to tell you. I will find out myself," Lilith refused taking his help.

Apollyon liked this trait of Lilith– not taking anyone's help and being independent. She was before the Devil Lord for whom every work in the world was easy.

"Are you sure?" Apollyon wanted her to re-think.

"Yes, I am," Lilith said with a stern tone, sharply glancing at him.

"Very well. I respect your decision. However, if you are unable to find any answer, you are free to come to me and talk about it with me," Apollyon affirmed.

Lilith stayed quiet and removed the cloak from her. She handed it to Apollyon. "I am going to bed. You should also leave," she said.

"I will watch you sleep," Apollyon affirmed.

"Why?" Lilith furrowed her brows together. "If your eyes will be on me, then it may be difficult for me to sleep," she reasoned.

"You can sleep with your back toward me. After you fall asleep, I will leave," Apollyon stated as he hung the cloak at his forearm.

"What if you do not leave? What if you sleep beside me? Why shall I trust you?" inquired Lilith.

Apollyon chuckled. "I will leave as soon as you fall asleep. I promise," he stated.

Lilith hummed in acknowledgment and headed to the bed. She sat on the mattress before she lay on it. Before Lilith could pull the soft duvet up to cover herself, Apollyon did it. Lilith pursed her lips together as she watched his face hovering above her.

Promptly, Lilith turned her back to him while Apollyon settled on the sofa chair, waiting for her to fall asleep.
