Chapter 100

**Sara**

I stepped into my apartment building, my mind still buzzing from my chat with Claire. Who knew her brother's circle of friends could be my ticket to a fancy finance job? The thought made me chuckle. I could end up with a corner office after all.
As the elevator doors opened, I nearly collided with Daniel and Sophia. Talk about timing.
"Whoa there, Sara! You trying to take us out?" Daniel laughed, steadying me.
"Sorry, guys," I said, feeling my cheeks flush. "I was lost in thought. Probably dreaming about spreadsheets or something equally thrilling."
Sophia rolled her eyes. "Only you could make numbers sound exciting, Sara."
"What can I say? It's a gift," I quipped. "So, what brings you lovebirds to my apartment?"
"I live here, remember?" Daniel said, raising an eyebrow. "Four floors up?"
"Right, right," I nodded, mentally kicking myself. "I knew that. I swear, my brain cells are on vacation today."
"Speaking of which," Sophia said, "how are you doing? We haven't seen you since you bolted from Daniel's birthday party the other night."
I felt a pang of guilt. "Oh, yeah. Sorry about that. I'm fine, really. Just had to meet a friend."
"A friend, huh?" Sophia's eyes twinkled mischievously. "Would this friend happen to be of the tall, dark, and handsome variety?"
I laughed, hoping it didn't sound as nervous as I felt. "Just a friend, Sophia. No need to plan the wedding just yet."
Sophia's brows rose, her grin widening. "Alright, if you insist. But I've got my eye on you, Miss Parker. You can't hide that sparkle forever."
I rolled my eyes, trying to play it cool. "Sparkle? Please. The only thing sparkling around here is my dazzling personality."
Daniel glanced between us, his forehead creasing. "Wait, what's going on? Did I miss something? Why are you grilling Sara about her love life?"
"Oh, nothing," Sophia said innocently. "Just girl talk. You wouldn't understand, sweetie."
I stifled a laugh as Daniel's confusion deepened. He looked like a puppy trying to solve a Rubik's cube.
"Right," he drawled. "Because us men are simple creatures who can't possibly fathom the complexities of 'girl talk.'" He made air quotes with his fingers, earning a playful swat from Sophia.
"Anyway," Daniel continued, "speaking of socializing, how about dinner this weekend at Sophia's place?"
I shifted my weight, suddenly feeling like a deer caught in headlights. "Dinner at Sophia's? Uh, sure. Sounds great."
Sophia's eyes lit up. "Fantastic! And hey, why don't you bring that mysterious friend of yours? You know, the one who's 'just a friend'?" She wiggled her eyebrows suggestively, making air quotes.
I felt my cheeks burn hotter than a jalapeño pepper. "Oh, I don't know if that's—"
"Come on, Sara!" Sophia cut me off. "The more, the merrier! Besides, I'm dying to meet this person who's flustered you all."
Daniel looked between us, confusion etched on his face. "Wait, what friend? Am I missing something here?"
Sophia patted his arm. "Don't worry your pretty little head about it, baby. Sara's got a secret admirer, that's all."
"I do not!" I protested, but my words fell on deaf ears.
"Saturday at seven," Sophia called over her shoulder as she dragged Daniel towards the elevator. "Don't forget to bring your mystery date!"
As the elevator doors closed, I saw Sophia's triumphant smirk and Daniel's bewildered expression. Great. Just great.
I trudged into my apartment, tossing my keys onto the counter with a clatter. My mind was spinning faster than a hamster on an espresso binge. Did Sophia know about Tom and me? Nah, it couldn't be. We'd been discreet... right? I mean, sure, there was that steamy kitchen makeout session at Daniel's party, but everyone was too drunk to notice. At least, I hoped they were.
I flopped onto my couch, sinking into the cushions like quicksand. My head throbbed with the weight of a thousand what-ifs. I kicked off my shoes, sending them flying across the room. One landed with a satisfying thunk against the wall. Take that, universe.
"Get it together, Sara," I muttered, rubbing my temples. "You're overthinking this."
But was I? The gears in my brain whirred into overdrive. Tom and Sophia were cousins. Cousins talk, right? Oh god, what if he'd spilled the beans about our... extracurricular activities? I could imagine Sophia's face if Tom had described our bedroom gymnastics vividly.
"Nope, nope, nope," I said, shaking my head vigorously. Tom wouldn't do that. He was a gentleman. He was a sexy, irresistible gentleman who could do things with his tongue that should probably be illegal, but still. He wouldn't kiss and tell.
Would he?
I groaned again, louder this time. This was ridiculous. I was being paranoid. Tom was a professional. He wouldn't risk his career by bragging about banging a student. Even if said student was mind-blowingly awesome in bed. Which I totally was, by the way.
But then again... what if Sophia had seen us in the kitchen that night? My cheeks burned at the memory. Tom's hands roaming my body, his lips on my neck, the way he'd pressed me against the counter... Damn, even the thought of it was enough to make my toes curl.
I sat up, suddenly struck by a horrifying thought. What if it wasn't just Sophia? Or worse, what if the whole party had gotten an eyeful of Professor Hottie and his naughty student?
"Oh, fuck me," I groaned, flopping back down.
