Chapter 242
**Sara**
The setting sun painted the sky in brilliant oranges and pinks as we cruised down the highway. Tom's hand rested on the gear shift, occasionally brushing against my thigh. The weekend had been perfect - almost too perfect. I didn't want it to end.
"Can't believe you're starting your new job tomorrow," Tom said, his eyes fixed on the road ahead.
I groaned, sinking deeper into the leather seat. "Don't remind me. I should be excited, but right now, all I can think about is how early I need to wake up."
"You know what this means, though, right?" Tom's fingers drummed against the steering wheel. "Between your new job and my schedule, we might not see each other as much during the week."
"Aww, are you going to miss me?" I poked his arm. "Don't worry, professor. We'll always have weekends. I plan to make them count."
The memory of our weekend adventure flashed through my mind, sending a warm flush across my cheeks. "Plus, I hear someone has a pretty flexible academic schedule."
"Is that your way of saying you'll drop by my office hours?" Tom shot me a sideways glance, his lips curving into that infuriating smirk. "Because I must warn you, that could be highly unprofessional."
"Please, like you'd turn me away." I stretched my legs out, purposely letting my dress ride up a bit. "But I was thinking more along the lines of weekend adventures. You seemed to enjoy our little nature excursion."
Tom's knuckles whitened on the steering wheel. "You're a menace, you know that?"
"Me?" I batted my eyelashes innocently. "I'm just talking about outdoor activities. Fresh air. Exercise. What did you think I meant?"
"Right." He snorted, adjusting his position in the driver's seat. "Well, weekends are all ours. No early morning alarms, no students interrupting with questions about their grades, no board meetings."
The setting sun caught his profile just right, highlighting those sharp cheekbones I loved to trace with my fingers. "Just us," he added, his voice dropping lower.
"Just us," I echoed, reaching over to run my fingers through the hair at the nape of his neck. "I hope you're not planning to keep me locked up in your apartment all weekend."
"Would that be such a bad thing?"
"Hmm." I pretended to consider it. "I suppose not. As long as you feed me."
"I think I can manage that."
"Oh really?" I traced patterns on his thigh. "What's on the menu?"
"Well, there's this new recipe I've been wanting to try." Tom's eyes stayed on the road, but his lips twitched. "It involves whipped cream and-"
"Tom!" I swatted his arm, laughing. "I meant actual food."
"That is actual food. Just creatively applied."
We turned onto my street, the familiar buildings coming into view. My stomach did a little flip - tomorrow would be my first day as a real adult with a real job. No more student life, no more sleeping in until noon.
Tom pulled up to my apartment building, shifting into the park. "Here we are, future Wall Street mogul."
"Hardly. I'll probably spend tomorrow trying not to spill coffee on my new blazer." I unbuckled my seat belt but didn't move to get out. "Thank you for this weekend. It was perfect."
"Perfect?" Tom's fingers traced along my jawline. "I seem to recall someone complaining about the hiking trail being too steep."
"Hey, these legs weren't made for mountain climbing." I gestured at my legs. "They have other talents."
"Oh, I'm well aware of their talents." His hand slid up my thigh, making my breath catch. "Very, very aware."
I leaned across the center console, pressing my lips to his. What was meant to be a quick goodbye kiss quickly turned heated. Tom's hand tangled in my hair, pulling me closer as his tongue swept into my mouth. The gear shift dug into my ribs, but I didn't care.
My fingers gripped the soft fabric of his shirt, holding on like I never wanted to let go. The familiar scent of his cologne and the leather seats made my head spin in the best possible way. For a moment, I forgot about my new job starting tomorrow and everything except how he made me feel.
"Sara," he groaned against my lips. "You need to go inside before I do something incredibly inappropriate in this car."
"Like what?" I nipped at his bottom lip.
His fingers tightened in my hair. "Like making you very, very late for your first day of work."
"Mmm, tempting." I pulled back just enough to see his face, his pupils blown wide with desire. "But I should probably show up on time. Make a good impression and all that."
"Responsible choice." His thumb brushed across my swollen lips. "Though I much prefer it when you're being irresponsible."
"Save that thought for next weekend." I pressed one final kiss to his lips before forcing myself to pull away. "I should go. Need my beauty sleep."
"You're beautiful enough already." His eyes roamed over me, making heat pool low in my belly. "But you should rest. Big day tomorrow."
I gathered my bag from the backseat, trying to ignore how my hands shook slightly. Whether from excitement about tomorrow or from Tom's heated gaze, I wasn't sure.
"All the best for tomorrow, Sara." His voice was soft, genuine. "You're going to blow them away."
"Thanks." I stepped out of the car and leaned down to look at him through the window. "Text me when you get home?"
He nodded, that devastating smirk back on his face. "Sweet dreams."
I watched as his car pulled away from the curb, the taillights disappearing around the corner. My lips still tingled from his kiss, and my body hummed with remembered pleasure from our weekend together. Tomorrow would bring new challenges, but right now, I couldn't wipe the silly grin off my face if I tried.
