CHAPTER 41

“This is a huge piece of evidence. We are sorry we held you. We have to question Mr. Peter now and hear what he has to say,” the officer said and continued, “call him in.”
The other junior officers left to take him but they got back suddenly.
“Where is he?”
“Chief, he is dead,” the junior officer said, not believing himself what had just happened.
“What do you mean he is dead? Wasn't he alive just a few minutes ago? How can he just die now?” the Chief was so angry when he heard that. How can a man die in a precinct full of police officers?
“I don't know but he isn't breathing and his pulse is just gone,” the officer didn’t know what to say except this too.
They all rushed to the interrogation room Peter was being held in and he was lying on the floor dead. He looked at Aurora whose face had gone pale. He could tell something was wrong with her. He rushed towards her but he was too late. Aurora fainted and she fell into his arms.
“Call the ambulance!” he shouted anxiously.
The police station became noisy. Peter was dead and his wife had fainted and no one knew the reason why he was dead. They went to the hospital where they were being guarded. He sat next to his wife praying for her to wake up.
The chief came into the hospital room and shook his head.
“What is it, Chief?” Lucian asked the old man.
“Peter died from poisoning,” the chief told him, he was still shocked with this news.
“What do you mean by that?” Lucian was also in shock and wanted to know more.
“The food he ate when he was in the station had a trace of poison. That's what killed him,” the chief explained.
“You mean he was murdered. Who would do that?” Lucian couldn't believe that something could just happen like that.
“I'm afraid that's another story for another time. The two of you won't be charged with anything. We are very sorry for causing so much harm to the two of you. I hope your wife will get better,” the chief apologized and left.
This was all too sudden, what was really happening?
He was confused. Since the case against him had been withdrawn he was free now. He spent the whole day with his wife in the hospital who woke up late in the evening. Her small face was all puffy from crying and she wasn't talking still.
“Doctor what's wrong with my wife?” Lucia was very worried about this and wanted to find a diagnosis for his wife.
“She has aphasia and I think it's metal but she will be fine; it's just that the shock had been too much for her. You just have to continue to monitor her and make sure she is in an environment that would allow her to forget about all the bad things that had just happened,” the doctor explained to him.
“Okay, thank you. So, can she be discharged?”
“Yes, she can be discharged even now.”
“I will get it done,” Lucian said and kissed his wife softly with warmth and love in his eyes.
He went to sign the documents and his wife was ready to leave. He took her back to the hotel and she still hasn't said a single word. Victor arrived that same day as well as his lawyer. He put his wife to bed and then met Victor and his lawyer in another room.
“Is she okay?”
“She is still in shock but she will be fine,’ Lucian responded.
“That's good news. I can't believe this happened during your honeymoon.”
“It's okay, I'm glad that we are both fine. Since I had been exonerated, I want you to look deeper into exactly what happened and make sure nothing goes to the press. My wife had suffered enough. I don't want to see her suffer anymore,” he instructed.
“We will do our best,” the lawyer Mr. Green said.
“The jet will be ready to depart tomorrow,” Victor said.
“Okay, it's time to go home. Staying here will just worsen the trauma. You go and rest,” he said his face white ashen.
The two men bided him farewell and left. Lucian was so tired and hoped that this nightmare will come to an end.
He joined his wife who was sleeping but not as peaceful as she always did. She was having another nightmare again. Last time she had it she talked about her dead boyfriend. Now that she had found the person who had killed him, she was having it again.
His wife was very pitiful. He hugged her and began to comfort her in a way his mother showed him the other time. This little girl had protected him from getting killed; she was his hero and whatever she was. Whether good or bad he was going to protect her and make sure no one else harms her again.

Joan couldn't sleep at all after she heard what had happened to her son and niece. Who would want to destroy another person's happiness like that?
“They are both okay. Soon they will be landing and you can see them,” her husband said.
“My poor babies; did you hear that Aurora isn't speaking at all? Can you just imagine what she went through to cause such a fright to that strong little girl? I'm glad that man got killed. If he was alive, I would have made his life very miserable for putting my babies in such a sad state!” she yelled at no one in particular as she was just so angry and wanted to vent out some anger.
“Calm down dear. You will scare everyone.”
“I don't care at this point. I just want to see them,” Joan cried.
“What did you just say?” Jewel asked standing by the door as she froze after overhearing what her grandma had just said.
