Chapter 8
Waiting for the night to crawl in, Evelyn's eyes were awakened wanting to see the door knob twist yet no one was coming, she suddenly cast her mind to the ardent kiss he gave her, and it got her numb.
“He has no manners!” Evelyn wailed, folding her fist in anger imagining what might have happened after the kiss.
Eagerly, she stood up and strides to the window where the moon rested on the air. She was loving the sight of it when a noise downstairs distracted her. Colton had locked her inside, however the clever Evelyn took a spare key from him. Being invisible might be somewhat helpful, she quickly wretch the key in its lock and got the door opened. Tip toeing downstairs, Evelyn could see a shadow of a furry fingers on the wall. She was curious to know what it could be and when she drew near, someone caught her hand and swirl her around. It was Alex whose eyes travelled round her body and then settle on her face. Her breath seized for a moment as his noise touched with hers. It was dark here, but his eyes served as the light which could travel fast.
“What are you doing here?” He asked, harsh in his tone.
“I…well.i.was.waiting.to.see.you” she stressed as her breath poured on his face so did his. She moved her nose from his as her heart skipper like a chick, his hands had now girdled her waist, and it seems he was searching for something in that eyes of Evelyn which were shaking at his fierce stare. Alex narrowed a brow at her and unhand her waist, Evelyn almost fell as she was subconscious, but she straightens up.
“Why would you wait for me?”
“Fool! I am waiting for you to make me visible! And besides you claim to be my husband” she thought biting her lower lips. If only she was that brave to say that to his face.
“Do you miss me already?” He pressed on, and a scoff escaped her lips.
“What! Miss? Never you've committed a crime by abducting me and oh! You kissed me without my will” she wailed in her heart wishing she blasted him with these words.
“Go back to your room if you've got nothing to say”
“Yes I do”. He gestured her to carry on in her words, and she said;
“A walk outside would do with you? Right”. Alex glanced at her, why would she demand for such?
“Please night brute” she pressured, and he growled at her. Night brute? Was that what she calls him.
“No!”
“Yes, a request for…a wife” she said grinding her teeth as the word wife pained her. Alex took a step away from her, she was suddenly regarding herself as his when he had thought of getting rid of her soon.
“Please night…”
"Brute?” He completed, and she grimaced, she had caught herself off guard by referring to him as brute. She acted like though she didn't hear him say that as a question.
Walking outside in the dark was just not okay for Evelyn she had requested to come out just to find her camera which Colton broke close by and take a secret shot of him, she had a queer feeling about why he hated the light, that was another fact.
“What lies in the dark” that could be a perfect headline to promote her company when she gets out of this place with a lot of evidence, and it might upgrade her position because she exposes some kind of thugs that abducts people and make them sign contracts which they were unaware of. Perfect! What she needed to know is where does Alex stay during the day and where does Colton stays during the night. Could either of them be descendants of both the sun and moon. Alex made a pause at the gigantic gate and turned his gaze at Evelyn who kept searching the grasses with her eyes, despite the undimmed nature of the moon, Evelyn had widened her eyes at every path they took in this place.
“Lost something?”
“Not really”. She replied, stamping her feet. Alex bent slightly and picked up something, he must have sensed it was strange to him.
“Here you go”
Evelyn snapped it from his hand and kissed the camera, her ticket to earning evidence had come back.
“Thanks” she uttered with no emotions as she examined what went off the poor thing when Colton slashed it. Alex turned over to leave that spot, Evelyn wasn't willing to go just yet, at least a tour around the place at night would do, and then she could ask him questions notwithstanding, he was gloomy which may not be conducive to ask him how she could be visible, but a bright look absolutely would help. Evelyn held the bars of the gate and smiled; being hostile wouldn't help and to get the prey, one has to snare him.
“Back then, I always admire the moon, she could travel and rest anywhere she wishes” she turned her gaze at Alex who wore a hoodie that didn't reveal his face. He was staring at the moon too, but from his looks, something about it got him despondent.
“How I could touch it from the mountains” she pressed with an eye on him, hoping he agrees they leave this place which was filled with bad energy. Her tricks on Colton didn't work, possibly it might for Alex.
“I only wish for a…”
“Go back in, or I will take you myself” he cut in, and she swallowed hard, neither of them could be convinced if their minds were set up.
“Fine then! Make me visible, I'm sick and tired of this place, no one wants to explain anything to me and the worst of it all is being married to a night…”
“Brute?”. There he goes again always ending the statement with a brute.
“There's nothing you should know, just lie low”
“Great but sorry to burst your bubbles, I won't!” She yelled, tighting her stomach and emptying her heart. She was dead for by speaking such to Alex. Alex grasped her that it hurts and Evelyn to himself.
“Don't you dare defile my others”
“Let me go!” She ordered blootering her feet against him, but her strength weren't worth the try, and she bites him on the hand hard that it cost him to bleed. Evelyn suddenly turned mute as his eyes were now daring, and he grappled her around the throat that she almost ran out of breath.
“Ple…a…see” she stressed gasping for air as her feet were no longer touching the ground and tears pumped from her eyes. He free her swiftly as though on fire, and she fell to the ground squirming. Alex stooped towards Evelyn and shoved her to face him, but she pushed his hand off and held her throat in pains. What wrong had she ever done to be held captive? He would have left her corpse in the wood rather of bringing it here to be treated like garbage. Evelyn cursed him underneath her breath and wished death comes upon this vagabond who could only see her. Alex attempted to carry her back to her assigned room, but she kept rolling away from him as if a log which was pushed from a hill. Her attitude pissed him off as he followed her track. Evelyn rose to her feet and banged the gates for help, she wasn't agitated to know about this place, or it's occupant anymore. It would be just fine being a spirit and watching over her family. There was no lock to open this gate, and she intended to climb onto it, all the same, it was of no avail. Alex stood behind her, watching as she threatens he shouldn't come any closer. Wow! seems she wasn't scared of dying again at the hands of this man. He glared at the spot which Evelyn bite him, it had healed up in no time. No one had to ask her to give up on striving because she belongs to this place now, and the thought of that made her cry. She went on her knees and covered her face with the palm. Evelyn had never been this downgraded and scared as all her life, she never dreamt of being a hostage neither humiliated by these men. It was the end of her dramas, she would be better off staying quiet until luck shines on her. Wiping off her tears, she stood up with a straight face and proceeded back to the mansion without saying a word to Alex, who certainly had no pity inside. Evelyn was missing her mother, she didn't even have the chance to say goodbye, how was she coping with her loss anyway as all Evelyn does was to be a pain in the neck. The tears weren't willing to come to an end as she steps, she made her think of home. Alex wasn't trailing after her, this time he held the bar of the gates too and felt a spark. He pulled his hand out and scrutinized the spot.
"Could she be the one?"
