Chapter 20: I made him laugh!

Mr Maxwell looked like he really wanted me to answer. His chubby face stared expectantly at me like I was an amusing comic he'd really like to know about.
"Why'd you call me sluggardly and how the hell do you know I'm a teen?" I asked; trying my best to suppress my anger.
He looked at me from head to toe, shaking his head like he was least intimidated. He started to walk up the stairs and I had to follow him just because of the sake of the job I wanted.
We got to the elevator on the second floor and I half heartedly wondered why the building architects decided not to make the elevator on the first floor. Mr Maxwell stared at my face thoroughly with the elevator door still open, he refused to hit the close button and make us go up and I was starting to think that we were going to have the interview inside an unclosed elevator. "Why're you staring at me like that? Are we going to have the interview here or what?"
Mr Maxwell burst into a loud laugh when he heard me. I was suddenly getting the feeling that I was going to hate him if I got the job and he was working in the company. "I'm wondering why the security men at the door let you in." He said after he stopped laughing.
"What's that supposed to mean? Do I have a body odour or something?" I asked as I dragged a part of my suit to my nose to smell.
I guess it amused Mr Maxwell the most because he was suddenly almost rolling to the floor from too much laughing. I furrowed my brows in confusion and asked my wolf, "I don't understand, what's so funny?" *"I don't know, but I think I'm gonna like him."* Luca replied.
"Seems you've forgotten that there's a CCTV camera in this elevator and that's why you think it's fine to laugh like a maniac on the ground." I muttered under my breath. Mr Maxwell seemed to hear me and he stopped laughing and got up to press the elevator button. The door got closed in the blink of an eye and the elevator started lifting up. It was my first time in an elevator. Not because I hadn't had many chances to get into one, but because I despised them as a result of some news I've heard about people dying in the elevator when the electricity power controlling it goes off.
The elevator came to a stop at the fifth floor of the skyscraper. I waited for the door to open before I walked out of it with Mr Maxwell. He walked briefly through a line of halls painted in white and I followed sluggishly at the back, he hadn't said anything since the elevator and his expression didn't give out a clue of what he was thinking. He seemed to be around his early forties, and I wondered what his job was in the company.
We got to an opening and I saw a thing that got me spellbound. The company made a game with how the founder started the business in the early 90s. A large billboard was hung on a high wall in the hall opening and it slide showed all the video games the company has released since when it was founded. My concentration was so fixed on the billboard that I didn't hear when Mr Maxwell called me twice, "Earth to you, Mr...?" He finally shouted in my ears.
I jumped back due to the sound of his voice in my eyes and asked, "Why'd we stop?"
The way he looked at me when I asked the question made me guess that he was getting more stressed and annoyed by my countless questions. "You didn't tell me your name." He said.
"You're the one going to interview me right?" I asked. "You'll surely know my name when we get to the interviewing office.
"Listen, just because you made me laugh and I let you talk all your crap doesn't make you eligible for the jobs we're giving out." He said, "I'm asking for your name and you're telling me to wait 'till we get to the interviewing office, it's like you want to be thrown out by security." He threatened.
I knew from the look on his face that he could do what he'd said. I really wanted to argue with him but I said instead, "Fine! my name's Lucian."
"Now, what sort of name is Lucian?" He muttered under his breath thinking I couldn't hear him.
"Let's just go!" He said out loud and we continued walking. I looked around the beauty and cleanliness of the building and it was all starting to feel strange because we've not passed a single soul since we got out of the elevator.
We finally got to a spaceful hall and Mr Maxwell stopped at a white-painted door. He brought out a card from his pocket and swiped it on the door, it opened with a noiseless pace and I openly stared at the contents of the room. It was large, painted white all through and it had six chairs and an expensive looking glass table in the middle. Bunch of papers I guessed were important documents were packed up in a far corner of the room. The only window in the room was closed tightly like the owner really hated outside air.
"Welcome to my humble office room!" Mr Maxwell exclaimed.
I looked around pouting my lips and arranging my face in a way that said, *Not bad.*
Mr Maxwell nodded like he understood my facial expression and pointed to one of the six chairs so I could sit down. I sat down on the office chair and prayed that he wouldn't reject me because of my teen looks.
"First of all, before I start the interviews, I'll like to tell you what made the guy who hit your shoulders with his get rejected. I wondered why he wanted to tell me before I nodded for him to continue. "First, he seemed to be overconfident and pompous of himself that he'll get the job. Second, he's not experienced at the job he came to apply for. And third, he made me laugh.
I dropped my mouth wide open in surprise and shock when I heard him. What kind of human was he? He declined giving a guy a job just because he made him laugh? My brain was starting to get tangled in confusion when I tried figuring out why he rejected a person because the person made him laugh.
Then suddenly, it occurred to me. I made him laugh also, I wasn't going to get the job!
