Chapter 33: You're Fired!

Second day of work seemed to be promising. I left the house and was walking to work, dressed in my normal attire of a suit and tie. I passed by the place where we had fought the rogue wolves the night before and I was tempted to go and check if their corpses had decayed like my guardian had claimed they would if their purpose of attacking us was for evil.
I decided to stop after a second thought. My wolf screamed at me not to go but another voice in my head said I should just take a stroll to the bush and check it out. I looked around my surroundings, some people were quite close to me but none of them were paying any attention to my actions. I didn't wait to think of the lie I'd tell if I was caught and word went out that a young guy wearing a suit was seen in a bush at almost 9 a.m. in the morning.
I walked into the bush without a single tinge of fear in my heart, the green grasses were wet as a result of night dew, I strode carefully to the direction of the one that was nearest since we disposed of their bodies in different places. My legs got still for a second when I caught sight of it. I finally got the strength to move back a little because the sight of what I was seeing had practically drained most of my energy. We'd disposed a black wolf here, and I noticed with scepticism that its body was as fresh as Beta Kim said it would be if their purpose of attacking was for Good. "Could it be…" I muttered in disbelief. "Maybe their bodies won't start to rot right away." I said before I moved to the other direction.
I was done with checking all of them with an estimated period of ten minutes and I still couldn't believe that their bodies were all fresh. It all looked very much like they were killed just today. "It's not going to be good if what I'm thinking is correct."
I got out of the bushes and continued walking my way. I got the feeling that someone was following me, and I tried to use my hearing senses to detect who it was because it disappears anytime I turn to look at it. What is all this about? Could it possibly be my guardian twice in two days?
I finally reached Blue Crystal company after making sure that whoever was following me didn't follow me there. I knew I was late since the watch on my left wrist read 9:20 in the morning, and I wondered what excuse I would give for coming to work late on just the second day of being employed there.
The two security guards at the door didn't bother to scan me for concealed weapons or even asked for my ID. They seemed to have gotten used to me within a day as they opened the door before I even neared them.
Thirty percent of the people in the hall room turned to look at me as I stepped into the company. I heard whispers and giggles from some girls in their early twenties and from some they were almost old enough to give birth to me. They all seemed to know that I was now officially working in the company, and Luca muttered a "thanks to Sarah Wilson" when I thought of it.
I hurried to the stairs and then straight to the elevator now fully aware that I was almost an hour and half late. I was glad to be alone in the wide opened technology but my happiness was short lived when I saw once again that Sarah Wilson stopped me from closing the door at the last minute. Why the hell do I always run into her?
She had a smug smile on her face and she was wearing black as always; which made me suspect her more of being a black werewolf. How else could Mr Maxwell had forgotten that he'd employed me without her using some kind of wolf magic trick on him? I would definitely tell Alpha Zaver about her the next time I see him.
"You're late! Mr Max specifically tasked me to go look around for you. It'll be funny to be fired the second day after being employed in a company, won't it?" Her face looked serious as she spoke; and I tried my best to hear her heartbeat but I couldn't.
I decided to ignore her words and moved my hand to hit the fifth floor button. But instead, she slapped off my hands before it got there and hit the fourth. "What's that supposed to mean?" I asked her.
"You're coming with me to Mr Maxwell's office," she replied, "That's what it's supposed to mean."
I knew that this was my last chance if I wanted to get things clear with her, and the elevator wouldn't be stopping at any other floors before the fourth. I challenged my inner-self as to what I'd lose if I turned out to be wrong in the end. Nothing!
I turned to Sarah Wilson and dragged her shoulder so she would be facing me. "You think I don't know who you really are? Or… what you really are?" I forced myself to let back the smirk that was threatening to spread on my face as I said it.
"What do you mean by that?" She asked me.
"I knew who you were right from the day you introduced yourself to me, the way you behaved and the way you managed to manipulate Mr Max so he could employ me."
She looked at me in disbelief for a second before she let out a loud laughter. I now feel self-conscious with the way she laughed continuously like I've said something really funny.
"Did you hit your head on the wall, Lucain?" She finally asked with a smug smile on her face. "God knows I hate and dislike you with passion for a reason I myself don't know. Even if I'm a witch and I have the spell to manipulate people, do you really think I'll do so because I want you to be employed?"
"No. I don't think you'll do so, I know you'll do so."
She stopped smiling when she heard me. Her eyes observed me from head to toe and she shook her head.
"I don't know what you hope to gain or achieve by manipulating the old man to employ me, but I'll make you a promise. You'll…."
I couldn't finish my sentence because the elevator suddenly stopped and the door opened on the fourth floor.
She rushed out of the elevator like she didn't want to hear my voice anymore. I followed behind her back and noticed that she didn't seem to care if I was following her. We got to Mr Maxwell's office and she opened his door with her card.
His head was bent over something he was reading and he was wearing sunglasses as always. His eyes moved up to us as he heard the door open.
"Lucain," he said.
"Yes sir!" I answered him.
"You're an hour and thirty minutes late. Do you have any excuses?"
"No sir." I replied.
"Good. You're fired!"
I let my mouth go wide open as I couldn't quite believe what I heard. He was going to fire me? Of course I knew he was going to be mad especially as it was my second day of working but still, that isn't enough to fire me. I didn't dare to look at Sarah Wilson and see her expression. I wasn't ready to be mocked by a black wolf in sheep's clothing.
"Sir," Sarah Wilson said, "I plead to you on his behalf, if you fire him, no other company might be willing to employ a nineteen year old dropout to work for them."
I clenched my teeth in anger and my fist in rage when I heard her. I knew I might not be able to hold my emotions for some more time and my fangs might come out un-announced. But everything around me seemed to stop when I heard,
"Fine, I'll give him another chance!"
