Chapter 21: Awkwardness

"I'm joking!" Mr Maxwell said before he cracked a laugh. "Nobody refuses to hire a person that makes them laugh. Like, did you really believe me? With your facial expressions and all."
I cursed under my breath as I wondered when the damn man was going to start the interview. He suddenly rubbed his hands together and hit the table to get my attention.
"So, let's start." He said.
I nodded my head thinking he was going to stand up and get a paper in which the interviewing questions were written but instead, it seemed like he was going to ask me offhand questions.
"Who founded this company and in what year was it founded?" He asked.
Shit!
I didn't do my research before I decided to come into the company. How the hell was I going to answer him?
"What! You don't know?" Mr Maxwell asked with a shocked expression on his face. "You don't even know the owner of the company, yet you came to apply for a job in it!" He sighed in frustration.
"Luca! Do you know who founded it…?"
Luca cut my words in mid air. *"How'd you expect me to know that? I'm just a wolf and not a human who knows white collar companies."*
"Mr Lucian…?"
"I'm coming, I know the name but have unfortunately forgotten it. Probably because of nervousness." I lied.
Mr Maxwell sighed and looked at me like he didn't believe me. But then, he said, "Fine. I'll give you five minutes to remember and if you can't, I'm going to assume you don't know and call security to throw your young ass out!"
The challenge sounded real and threatening. I would have googled the answers with my phone but Mr Maxwell's stern brown eyes bored into mine.
*"Say anything that comes to your mind."* Luca suddenly said.
"What the fuck!" I muttered back to Luca.
"Two minutes remaining!" Mr Maxwell announced and smiled.
*"Have I ever failed you, Lucian?"* Luca asked.
"No but…" Luca cut me mid sentence saying, *"It's fine if you don't trust what I suggested. We can go to another company and try your luck, afterall the moon goddess only puts a wolf into a werewolf to assist him or her in anything they want to do."*
I breathed out in anxiety and said out loud without thinking, "Noah Crystal founded the company in 1962!" I closed my eyes in fear and almost passed out as I waited for Mr Maxwell to burst into another minute of laughter. But it didn't come, the office was as quiet as a graveyard after I voiced out my guess.
I finally got the courage to open my eyes and saw Mr Maxwell looking at me in a strange way. "You knew it all this while, why didn't you just say it?"
My heart burst up in joy when I realised that I was correct. Mr Maxwell's emotion was opposite to mine at that moment though, it seemed like he was quite angry that I got the answer.
"Thank you Luca." I quietly said but didn't get a reply. Luca was obviously mad once again that I hadn't trusted him at first.
"Let's get on with the next questions. "How old are you?"
I looked around the room wondering if I should lie or not. "I'm turning twenty in January." I finally replied.
Mr Parker nodded his head with a knowing look on his face and asked, "What's your level of education and why'd you drop out?"
I turned my face to look at him with blazes in my eyes. How dare he ask why I dropped out? I finally managed to calm down my nerves before I said, "Level of education's second grade of college, and I dropped out for personal issues on which I'm not comfortable to talk with anybody about!"
Mr Maxwell flinched when he heard my answer and was about to say something about it when a knock on the door interrupted. "Who's there?" He asked with irritation evident in his voice.
"It's your personal assistant!" The feminine voice replied with twice as much irritation.
"What the fuck do you want?" Mr Maxwell cursed in anger.
"I came to drop the new designs that were made and take a glance at the person you're interviewing."
Mr Maxwell hissed before he said, "Come in!"
The door opened and a woman of about thirty-one stode in the room with a transparent bag of files in her hands. She was short, wearing a dark conservative suit with blouse and heels that made her taller. She walked up to Mr Maxwell who had a bored look on his face and dropped the file bag. She turned her back to look at me, her dark eyes observing my even features. Something about her I couldn't put my hands on felt strange, I perceived her scent in my nose and I needed no one to tell me that I've smelled it before. On a dark night when I was sprinting.
"Hello?" She said when she noticed how I didn't stop staring at her. "Oh! I'm sorry, you just really looked like a friend of mine who died in an accident." I said.
I heard a gasp from Mr Maxwell and the room was quiet after that. I suddenly covered my mouth with my hands realising that I went too far in the lie.
"I'm sorry about that." She said before I could beat her to it. "You also look familiar, have we met?"
"No!" I exclaimed, "We've most definitely never met."
The way I shouted my reply was like it was forbidden for anybody to ever meet her. I cursed myself for my stupidity and actions. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to make it sound that way."
"It's okay." She replied while smiling. "You're probably just nervous because I'm making you remember your dead friend!"
The silence was worse when she finished. It seemed like time stopped and the world got quiet.
"I'm Sarah Wilson by the way." She said while raising up her hand for a handshake. I looked at the hand in my front and mine refused to move. The level of awkwardness in the office room now stretched to full height. She slowly dropped her hand without a sign of embarrassment and said, "It was nice meeting you, though I didn't get your name."
I still didn't reply to her and she turned to smile at Mr Maxwell before she strolled to the door and walked out.
The room was quiet for almost ten minutes after she left before Mr Maxwell finally broke the silence, "What job did you say you were applying for?"
I didn't think for a second before I said, "Graphic designing."
"You've got the job!"
"...."
