Chapter 33: Damian
A week later, because of Lydia's exhaustion, we eat a delicious dinner provided by one of the hotel chefs. Lydia enjoys cooking but she's been grumpy all day, her back hurts and slightly depressed. I invite Raul and his new boyfriend, Paul, to join us. Keeping my wife entertained and out of trouble these last weeks of her pregnancy is priority.
Lydia picks at her food and her mood doesn't seem to improve. I know she's not sleeping well even with that damned pillow, but there's little I can do about it. Raul suggests playing cards when the table is clear. Her mood lightens somewhat as we start a game of spades especially when she starts winning tricks.
An hour into our quiet evening with friends, the power flickers a few times and then goes off completely and the entire penthouse goes dark.
"Lydia, do not move. I don't want you falling." I say into the sudden darkness. "The backup generators will kick in and the emergency lights will come on in a minute."
"It's a nasty storm," Paul volunteers looking toward the large rain covered floor to ceiling windows of the penthouse.
I squeeze Lydia's hand. "They've had warnings all day so this wasn't unexpected." The emergency lights come on before I finish the last of the sentence. "I need to check on the club and call the hotel's manager to make sure he has everything under control."
"I'll come with you," Lydia says.
Of course she wants to come with me. The woman has no sense of what it means to rest. "The elevators won't be working and there's no way you're walking up and down the stairway." Her hand stiffens beneath mine and her expression becomes obstinate. Before she tells me exactly how she feels about being bossed around, I lift her hand to my lips and kiss the backs of her fingers. "Argue and I'll handcuff you to the bed and give Raul the key while I'm gone."
She brings my hand to her lips and at the last minute bites me. "Once this baby is born, Master Bossy Pants, we're having a talk."
Without smiling at her threat because I know what's good for me, I rub my hand and the teeth marks she left behind. "As long as you begin the conversation with Master, you may be able to avoid a red ass."
"Argh, keep dreaming," she challenges like always.
I give her hand a small squeeze. "Don't worry, I've had months to dream up proper punishments for a disrespectful wife." I turn to Raul. "If you don't mind, I want you and Paul here with my irritating woman while I check things out."
Raul doesn't miss a beat. "No problem, we'll keep her busy and out of your hair."
"Raul!" Lydia shrieks in a very un-Lydia manner.
Raul casts sheepish eyes her way. "Only while you're pregnant. I'm thinking of the baby."
If eyes could sizzle, it would describe Lydia's at this moment. "You're no friend. I'll teach Paul a few things when I'm not pregnant and you won't be sitting comfortably for a week."
"Promises, promises." Raul smiles and batts his eyelashes.
"The entire world is against me, I swear," Lydia whines again. I fight hard not to roll my eyes because I'm afraid Raul or Paul will give me away and I don't want her more agitated.
The sooner I get this done, the sooner I can put my bratty wife to bed. In her current mood she probably won't appreciate that we'll be sleeping and not playing. "I'll return as quickly as possible," I tell her before leaving.
Thirty minutes later, I've spoken to the hotel manager and assured myself that he has his end of things covered and doesn't need my help. I take a last tour of the club, which isn't crowded, thank God. Kyle and his new permanent sub, Trisha, are cuddled on a couch next to the scene area.
I check in on them before heading back to Lydia. "You hanging in there?" I ask.
Kyle nods, his hand running over his sub's shoulder tenderly. "We're fine. I'm assuming the elevators are out of commission until the power is back?"
"Yes and luckily we can entertain our guests for a few hours on minimal lighting if needed. The carousel isn't running but there's plenty of light to find your way around and the bar is stocked. This rarely happens, but it's not the first time we've lost power and we have a plan in place."
"We'll wait it out," Kyle assures me. He pulls Trisha closer. Her eyes are still glassy from what must have been a heavy scene. Not that Kyle plays any other way. I'm glad he's found someone who knows about his private life and accepts him for who he is. I didn't think Trisha could handle him at first, but she proved me wrong.
"Damian?" I turn and see Raul and immediately know there's a problem. "Umm, well, umm."
"What is it, Raul?" My Dom voice is filled with impatience.
"Lydia sent me to tell you her water broke."
I don't think I heard him correctly. "What?"
His small excited smile and the slight fear in his eyes connects the dots just as he says, "She's having the baby."
Trisha pipes up from Kyle's arms before I start running. "With all the Doms around here, I'm sure someone will know what to do."
Not on my watch. "We'll fireman-carry her down the stairs if we need to. I am not delivering a baby." Chills roll up my back at the thought.
"Yes, Daddy," Trisha teases. I slowly turn her way and stare at her in horror and when I look at Raul, he has a green tint to his skin. Hell this isn't good.
I ignore Trisha. "If you don't mind, will you ask if anyone in the club knows anything about childbirth? Raul, call the fire department and let them know what's happening." I take off running for the stairwell. Getting Lydia down twenty-nine flights of stairs won't be easy but she isn't having our baby outside of a hospital.
Fuck.
